Ian David Gagnon
50, Askilton, Inverness Co.
Ian David Gagnon, 50, Askilton, Inverness County, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at home.
Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late Graeme ‘Tiny’ and Mary (MacPherson) Gagnon.
In his earlier years he was employed by Gord’s Gulf, Jiffy Shoe Repair and he worked two summers for the Bedford Institute of Oceanography serving on the MV Fairmorse.
He was a member of Port Hawkesbury Youth Marching Band and a member of Air Cadet Squadron 719 Stora.
He was employed as a heavy duty mechanic with Stora Enso, Point Tupper. A member of CEPW Union, Local 972. He was a former member of Port Hawkesbury Lion’s Club. An associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 and he was a dedicated blood donor. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Church, Port Hawkesbury.
He is survived by his wife, the former Debbie Kennedy; sisters, Anne (Larry) Wowk, Edmonton; twin, Lorna (Allison) MacRury, Sugar Camp, Doreen (David) McGowan, Sault Ste. Marie; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by uncles, John, David and Rannie MacPherson.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Friday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Mark’s United Church, Rev. Debbie Aiken officiating, assisted by Rev. Keith Adams. Cremation to follow. Burial in Southbrook Cemetery at a later date.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43 or a charity of one’s choice.
John Allan Gillis
Grand Mira
John Allan Gillis, a life-long resident of Grand Mira, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2001.
Born May 3, 1931, in Grand Mira, he was the son of the late Joseph V. and Margaret Elizabeth (Gillis) Gillis.
He was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish, Grand Mira. He was also former plumber/pipefitter and a union member of Local No. 682.
He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Beaton; three daughters, Margaret, Raylene (Darryl) Gwynn, and Estelle; three grandchildren, Darren, Brittany, and Tinishya; brothers, Colin (Frances), Sydney, Duncan (Adeline), Boston; sisters, Stella Fraser, New York, Margaret (Leonard Crist), Arkansas, Sarah Black, Westmount, and Helen MacNeil, Sydney; many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by brother, Lauchie and a sister, Alberta Black.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 2 p.m. from St. Margaret’s Church, Grand Mira, with Fr. Campbell and Fr. MacNeil officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society.
Arthur Devoe
91, Mill Creek
Arthur Devoe, 91, of Mill Creek, passed away peacefully Friday, April 20, 2001 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Mill Creek, he was the son of the late Kate Pero and Michael Devoe.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or. Art was a carpenter, coal miner and a fisherman, which was the greatest passion of his long life.
Art is survived by a sister, Olive (Theodore) Marsh, Mill Creek and Kirk and Shalane. He was a special ‘poppy Art’ to numerous nieces and nephews.
Art was predeceased by four brothers, Harry, Steve, Hartland and Charles.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will take place today (Monday) at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. A.D. Campbell officiating.

James E. Campbell
68, Minnesota
Aged 68, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Jackson Doctors Hospital.
He was born in Sydney, N.S., Canada, on July 16, 1932, to Esther and George Campbell.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minn. in 1955. During his career, he was a social worker for the St. Cloud Reformatory; food service manager for St. Theresa College in Winona, Minn.; and promoted to regional food supervisor for Crotty Brothers Food Service. He co-owned and operated Little John’s Pub Restaurant at Crossroads Center in St. Cloud beginning in 1974. He also co-owned and operated the Nottingham Restaurant in Alexandria, Minn. Later, he owned and operated Little John’s Pub in Grand Rapids, Minn. He was a resident of Jackson for 13 years. He was food service director at Adrian College for 10 years. He was a food service director at Adrian College in 1999.
In honour of his retirement, the second annual James Campbell Golf Classic will be held May 31, 2001 at Tri-State University, Angola, In. He was an active member in the Lions Club and Eagles Club for many years.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by daughters, Jody Quinn, Anchorage, Ak., and Michelle Campbell, St. Paul, Minn.; mother, Esther Campbell; and brother, Gary Campbell and family, St. Peter’s, Cape Breton, N.S. He also leaves behind his wife, Vi, of Jackson, and stepson, Don Schmidt.
In keeping with his request he will be cremated and his ashes will be spread on the Bras d’Or Lakes in Cape Breton. Services will be held at the funeral home, Tuesday 4 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. The Rev. Don Herdman will officiate.
Margaret Cecilia Ross
Little Narrows, N.S. / PEI
On March 16, 2001, Margaret Ross passed away peacefully at the Souris Hospital, P.E.I., with family at her side.
Margaret was born in Elmira, P.E.I. on Oct. 25, 1909, where she enjoyed her childhood years. She then moved to Boston, Mass., in her late teenage life where she met and married Duncan Alexander MacAskill Ross of Little Narrows, Cape Breton. Although having no children of their own, they assisted in raising, a special niece, Judy (Ross) Roy and special nephew, Warren Ross.
Margaret and Duncan retired from U.S.A. and moved to Duncan’s old homestead in Little Narrows where they both became actively involved in their community.
Margaret was a lady who brought charm and class to everything that she said or did. Margaret loved a good game of cards (auction) with friends combined with lots of laughter and wit. Margaret loved to watch sports especially baseball where she cheered her beloved Boston Red Sox. Margaret also followed the happenings in the world closely and loved a good political discussion.
In later life when her husband Duncan became ill and needed special care, Margie was at his side with the help of Homecare staff until his death at home on March 30, 1998.
Margaret had to make many difficult decisions in her golden years, which included leaving Cape Breton and moving to East Point, P.E.I., where she resided with her sister, Rose.
Margaret is sadly missed by her brother, Gus Bailey; sisters, Mae Byrne and Rose Cheverie; sisters-in-law, Lillian Bailey, Dot Bailey, Edna Taylor, Annie Ross and Jamie Ross; brother-in-law, Luke Power; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Aeneas and Mary Jane (Jarvis) Bailey, sisters, Eileen MacDonald (Walter), Katie Murphy (Pius), Isabel Power and Bernadette Bailey, brothers, James (Edith) and Harold.
Wakes were conducted in Souris, P.E.I., and Baddeck, Cape Breton, at the Dingwall and Dunlop Funeral Homes respectively. Funeral mass was celebrated in St. Columba Parish, Iona, Cape Breton with Fr. Fred Morley as celebrant. The music was supplied by the St. Columba Parish Choir with assistance by nephew-in-law, Ron Roy. Violin selections were played by grandnieces, Colette Cheverie and Mary Jane Doucette.
Active pallbearers were, Charlie Ellis, Angus MacKay, Dan Joseph MacNeil, Gary Ross, Kevin Bailey and Kenny MacDonald.
Honourary pallbearers were, Malcolm and Christina MacDonald, Allister and Margie MacRitchie, Jamie Ross, Annie Ross, Madeleine Northen, Kay MacNeil, Delores Murphy, Mary Bell Matheson and Charlene MacNeil.
Burial will take place in the Little Narrows Presbyterian Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
