Edward Johnson
82, Sydney
Edward A. (Ed) Johnson, 82, of 10 William St., Apt. 6, Sydney, formerly of 103 Ferris St., passed away Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Cambridge, Kings County, he was a son of the late Edward ‘Ned’ and Willimena (Harrigan) Johnson.
He was employed at Cape Breton Chrysler for many years and also worked at several other businesses in the Sydney area, more recently Ed was employed with the City of Sydney works department and also served as caretaker for the seniors residence on Williams Street.
Surviving are two sons, Darrell, Sydney, and Ken, New York; four daughters, Theresa, Gladys and Olive, all of Ontario, Dawn (Michael) Ingram, Borden, Ont.; sister, Mrs. Geraldine Mintis, Cambridge, N.S.; three grandchildren, Vincent, Norma and Desireé.
Predeceased by his wife, the former Eurie Jones, son, Chris, two sisters, Evelyn and Jane, three brothers, Laurie, Cecil and Howard.
The late Mr. Johnson will have no visitation. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Mabel Whalen
91, Sydney
Mabel Gladys Whalen, 91, of 365 Columbia St., Sydney, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Wesleyville, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late George and Louise (Brown) Tiller.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney and was a longtime and honourary member of the parish CWL. She was also involved with Catholic Charities and was a past-president of the St. Anthony’s Home. She served as president of the MacGillivray’s Guest Home ladies auxiliary the year of its inception.
She is survived by her husband, Michael; one daughter, Louise, Sydney; one son, Michael (Irene), Sydney; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Bonnar-Tiller, Montreal, Mrs. Madeline Bishop, Newfoundland; two grandchildren, Michael (Donna) and Stephen (Debbie) and one great-grandchild, Michelle.
She was predeceased by several brothers and sisters.
The late Mrs. Mabel Whalen will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16 in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Mary W. 'Billie' Stephens
75, Sydney
Mary W. ‘Billie’ Stephens, 75, of 312 Esplanade, formerly of Irish Cove, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Umlah) Brackett of Sydney.
Billie was an avid bingo player and her jolly, quick wit will be remembered by those who knew her. In her earlier years she was a member of the Sydney Curling Club. She was employed for many years at Zellers, Sydney.
She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Purchase, Halifax; two grandchildren, Richard and Charles, both of Halifax County and several great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, son, Greg and a sister, Eileen.
The late Mrs. Stephens will have visitation today (Friday), March 16, at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel (main level), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Church. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to C.B. Palliative Care Society, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
Shawn Currie
35, Sydney / Dominion
Shawn Currie, 35, of St. Thomas Street, Sydney, and formerly of Dominion, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Watertown, Mass., he was the son of Joe and the late Shirley (nee MacPherson).
Shawn was a carpenter and was self-employed. He was a great musician and loved to entertain playing the guitar. Shawn also wrote music.
He will be sadly missed by his father, Joe, Sydney; brother, Len (Rose), Westmount; sister, Mary Cynthia (Mrs. Steve Haggar), Bedford; nieces and nephews, Samantha, William, Robbie, Sara and Anna.
Visitation for Mr. Currie will be held Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, 11 a.m. at St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion, Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Donations in Shawn’s memory to a charity of one’s choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Abe Goldman
89, Sydney
Abe Goldman, 89, of Ingleside Street, Sydney and Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Ottawa, he was a son of the late Jacob and Rachel (Paliff) Goldman.
He was a member of the Temple Sons of Israel Synagogue, Sydney. A veteran of the Second World War, Abe served in the RCAF. A lifelong salesman, he was employed by Stott Aluminum, McKnight’s Music Store, Encyclopedia Britannica and World Book. He was a well-known pianist and entertainer.
Along with his loving wife, Charlotte Ruth MacDonald, he is survived by one daughter, Rosalind (Ray) MacDonald, and one grandson, Joel.
He was the last member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by four sisters, Ethel Dworkin, Ottawa, Rose Borden, California, Eva Shapiro, Halifax and Mary Gorfman, New Jersey; one brother, Harry, of Fredericton.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday (today) at 2 p.m. at the Hebrew Cemetery, Sydney. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Anna Mae Jackson
89, Sydney
Anna Mae Jackson, 48, of Sydney, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Annie Marie Lewis of Sydney. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier.
Surviving are her husband, John Jackson; daughters, Adelia (Dee) (Darryl) Lynk, Reserve, Susan (Charles) MacInnis; step-daughters, Brenda Jackson and Jolene Jackson, both of Sydney Mines; son, William (Billy) MacInnis, Sydney; step-sons, Timmy (Doris) Jackson, Ontario and Marvin (Ann) Jackson, Sydney Mines; two sisters, Ethel Holland, Whitney Pier and Rena (Bernie) Carew, Whitney Pier; brothers, Donald (Edie), Leo (Marie), Tom (Denise), all of Sydney, Art, Ontario, Earl (Gaye), Mira, Sandy (Chook), North Sydney, all Lewis; two grandchildren, and six step grandchildren.
She was predeceased by one brother and four sisters.
Their will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 19, 2001 (today) in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier at 11 a.m., Fr. E. MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
