Antonia Ryba
91, Sydney
Antonina Ryba was born in Tarnow, Poland, Feb. 4, 1910. She immigrated to Sydney in October 1929, married Jozef Ryba and resided at 69 Henry St.
Her devotion was to her family, both here and in Poland.
Antonina, better known as Babcia, could always be found in her garden, where she loved nourishing her beautiful flowers. She was a member of St. Mary’s Polish Parish, its altar society, St. Cecilia’s Polish Choir and a former member of the Polish Cultural Association.
She is survived by daughters, Stella (Bernard) Granville, Ottawa, Ont.; Frania (Melbourne) McKay, Sydney; son, Joseph (Patricia Keough), Sydney; 11 grandchildren, Margaret and Frania Granville, Edward, Lynette, Walter and Laeora Ryba, Shauna and Shari McKay, Joseph, Andrew and Jennifer Ryba; and daughter-in-law, Peggy Ryba. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jozef, in 1968; and son, Walter, in 1986.
Visitation for the late Antonina Ryba was held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Sunday and will be held Monday (today), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Polish Church, Wesley Street, Sydney. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of one’s choice.

Harold Hutchins Burchell
82, Sydney
Harold Hutchinson Burchell, 82, of Kings Road, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Wednesday, March, 21, 2001.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Alfred and Jenny (Wier) Burchell.
A veteran of the Second World War, Harold served with the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was a member of the United Protestant Church, Sydney River and retired from Sydney Steel.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Eileen (Somers); two daughters, Sheila (Bobby) Curry, Howie Centre, and Lisa (Kevin) Charlton, Halifax; one son, Charles (Jeanie), Newfoundland; stepdaughter, Sandra (Donnie) Robertson, Howie Centre; two stepsons, Wallace ‘Buzz’ Burton, Howie Centre, and Gary Burton, Vancouver; three sisters, Minette, Sydney, and Alice and Blanche, both of Halifax; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a special stepson, Melvin, three brothers, Albert, Charlie and Morris, two sisters, Helen Ferguson and Rita Gass.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A family memorial service will be held in the chapel Friday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Russell Andrews
91, Sydney
Russell Curtis Andrews, 91, of Bayview Street, Sydney, passed away Saturday, March 24, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Uriah and Mary Jane (Boutilier) Andrews.
He was a member of St. Mark’s Anglican Parish, Coxheath. He was a master carpenter, retired from Maritime Builders. He was a life member and the oldest member of the Carpenters Union in Nova Scotia.
Russell is survived by one daughter, Sarah (Sally) MacDonald, Sydney; three grandsons, William, Ross, David; one great-grandson, Aidan Campbell MacDonald; one sister, Ida K. Shaw, Coxheath; one nephew, Edwin Shaw, Burlington, Ont.
Russell was predeceased by his wife, Gladys Yetman, in 1988.
There will be no visitation; a funeral service will be held (today) Tuesday 2 p.m. in St. Mark’s Anglican Church with Rev. Harold Brown officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to charity of choice.
A. Freda Newbury
88, Sydney
Alice Freda Newbury, 88, Vulcan Avenue, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Tuesday, March 20, 2001.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Simon and Mary Elizabeth (Jack) Bonnell.
Freda was a member of the Sydney Pentecostal Church.
Surviving are her husband, Andrew; daughter, Norma Corbett, Sydney; three sons, Bill (Ruth), Donald (Brenda) and Norman (Sandra), all of Ontario; sister, Daisy Spanks, Sydney; brother, Cecil, Sydney; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Howard MacMillan, brothers, Harvey, Dick and Francis and one grandchild.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Sydney Pentecostal Church, Friday, 2 p.m. with Pastor Terrance Carew officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sydney Pentecostal Church or to a charity of choice.
Joseph Roderick McKinnon
84, Sydney
Rod McKinnon, who resided at 1559 Victoria Rd. with son Gerard, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, March 22, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay, Jan. 9, 1917, he was a son of the late Peter and Bridget (Gouthro) McKinnon.
After 44 years, he retired from Sysco in 1980. He was a veteran of the Second World War and was past-president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 128, Whitney Pier.
He was a founding member of the Cape Breton Beagle Club, the Highland Rod and Gun Club and Memory Lane Singers. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending most of his leisure and retirement years in the little log cabin in Lake O’Law (Margaree).
He was a natural storyteller, singer and loved to play cards. In former years he was a member of the Holy Redeemer Men’s Choir and participated in the choirs minstrel shows.
Rod and his wife Margie befriended many and performed numerous acts of charity for their family and community.
He is survived by two sons, Joe (Posey), Gerard (Annie), both of Sydney; one foster daughter, Lorna (the late John Doucette), New Waterford; one brother, Tom, Toronto; one sister, Olive, Toronto; nine grandchildren; and 22 great grandchildren; and long-time companion, Marg Hennick.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Margaret (Bennett), one son in infancy, four sisters, Mary, Anastasia (Sister Esther), Esther and Francis; five brothers, John, Bernard, Hector, Phonse and Charlie.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 23, 2001, from 2-4 and 7-9 at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association.
Zita Eileen MacNeil

It is with deep sorrow that the family and friends of Eileen MacNeil, 659 George St., Sydney, announce her death at home on Friday, March 23, 2001.
Eileen was born in Sydney Mines, C.B., the youngest daughter of the late Hector and Evelyn (Francis) MacNeil, Main Street, Sydney Mines.
Eileen received her early education in Sydney Mines. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier University and the Maritime School of Social Work, Dalhousie University. Eileen’s career as a social worker saw her working in child welfare, mental health and addiction fields.
At the time of her death, Eileen was the manager of community counseling and treatment services for Addiction Services, District 8, Health Authority.
Eileen was a member of the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers. She was the first chair of the board of Every Woman’s Centre, Sydney.
Eileen is survived by Marjorie MacDonald; her sisters, Elizabeth MacNeil, Sydney Mines and Monica (Carl Fulton) MacNeil, Lower Sackville, N.S. She is also survived by three nephews and four nieces, Jim (Susie) MacNeil, Ontario, Cathy (Norman) Cowal, Lower Sackville, June MacNeil, Sydney Mines, Kevin (Cheryl) MacNeil, Cole Harbour, Mary (David Bell) MacNeil, Halifax, Barbara (Brian) Howie, Lower Sackville, and Ian (Kelly) Fulton, Ottawa. Eileen is also survived by many wonderful friends and colleagues.
There will be no wake. Funeral service will be held at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines on Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Cremation to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Every Woman’s Centre, VON or Palliative Care.
