Alice MacDonald
73, Sydney
Alice MacDonald, 73, of 290 Cabot St., formerly of Victoria Road, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, in the presence of her loving family after a brief but courageous battle.
She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Margaret Heffernan.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s CWL. She graduated from Holy Angels High School and attended Teachers’ College in Truro then returned to Cape Breton to teach school for a few years in Beaver Cove, Dutch Brook and Sydney. Alice gave up teaching and devoted her life to her family.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Vincent MacDonald; daughter, Dianne; three sons, Paul (Glenda), Andy (Dale) and Glen, all of Sydney; sisters, Margaret (Alf) Joyce, Dorothy (Ted) Shea, Kay (Frank) O’Shea, Teresa (Kevin) Brown; brothers, Frank (Sadie) Heffernan, Jim (Nickie) Heffernan, of Moncton; grandchildren, Scott, Ainsley, Nadine, Cynthia, Sean, Bryan and Kayla; great-grandson, Holland; and special friends, Cathy and Frank.
Predeceased by sisters Mary MacKinnon and Pauline Gillis.
The family will recieve friends for visitation for the late Mrs. MacDonald on Monday, April 2, 2001 from 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St. Sydney.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney, Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating, with a private burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to MacGillivray Guest Home or charity of one’s choice in memory of Alice MacDonald.

Muriel Agnes (Noonie) MacPhee, 84, of Borden Street, Sydney, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Jane (MacPhail) Young.
Muriel was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish.
She is survived by three daughters, Helen (John) Racki, New Waterford, Martha (Dave) Osborne, with whom she resided, Doris Lawrie, Brantford, Ont.; two sons, Joseph (Eleanor Pollett), Sydney, Richard (Priscilla Syms), Sydney; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph (Shinny); sister-in-law and best friend, Martha Young, Sydney; many nieces and nephews,
She was predeceased by her husband, Ambrose, one daughter, Nancy in infancy, seven brothers, Thomas in infancy, Daniel, Gordon, George, Colin, Johnny, Murdock, three sisters, Rose, Mary Campbell, Catherine (Kate) Long.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral mass in Holy Redeemer Church, Tuesday 11 a.m. with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in New Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Holy Redeemer Loaves and Fishes.

Leila Shirleen (MacLellan) MacLean, age 64, of Sydney, Cape Breton, passed away peacefully at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, April 2, 2001, with her husband and several children present.
Born in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Shirley was the daughter of the late John Joseph MacLellan and Euphemia (MacLean) MacLellan.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Michael MacLean; four sons, Michael (Beverly), Mira, Richard, Sydney, John, Sydney and Jim, Edmonton; three daughters, Theresa (Dan) Mannett, Halifax, Karen, Sydney and Leisa (Glen) Iannetti, Sydney.
She is survived by her sister, Ann (Leo) Donovan, Ingonish.
Shirley was a member of the Immaculate Heart Parish. She will always be remembered for her kindness and compassion.
She was a loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren, Adam, Leaha, Michael, Laura, Tia, Andrew, Samantha, Danielle, Matthew, Krysten, Natasha and Lisa-Marie.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has take place. A memorial mass will be held at Immaculate Heart Parish, Wednesday at 11 a.m., Fr. E. MacDow officiating.

Shirley Marie Hamilton, 64, of Lingan Road, Sydney, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late James Henry and Annie (Donovan) Clarke.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Frank Edward Hamilton; one daughter, Paulette (Samuel) Price, Sydney; one son, Ronald Scantlebury, Sydney; stepchildren, Rosana Hamilton, Barbara Duguid, Frank Hamilton and Robert Hamilton; two granddaughters, Gina and Kandyce Price; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Daisy Clarke, Montreal, Olive MacElveen, Virginia, and Eva Johnson, Tennessee; one brother, James, Montreal.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Friday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Surrounded by her family and friends, Mrs. Cecilia Brewer of Sydney, formerly of Margaree, was called to heaven by the father on Wednesday, April 4, 2001.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 49 years, John Brewer, Sydney; daughters, Michelle Brewer, at home, Deborah (Dana) Seppola, Canyon Creek, Alta.; sons, Wayne (Beryl) Brewer, Marion Bridge, Lawrence (Lynn Baker) Brewer, Keltic Drive.
A void will also be left in the hearts of her sisters, Alice Roberts, Toronto, Rose Harkin, Sackville; brothers, Michael and Simon Arsenault, Margaree.
Her 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild will miss ‘Nanny’s’ singing, baking, sewing, crafts and wonderful stories about Grandpa Johnny.
Cecilia was very active her entire life in the Holy Redeemer Parish as a member of the congregation and as a Eucharistic minister. She served in the CWL as an active member and was CWL president for two years. Cecilia was involved with the Girl Guides of Canada as commissionaire and as a leader for an astounding 27 years. Her extensive volunteer work also included campaigning for the Canadian Cancer Society and the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Everyone that knew Cecilia or was touched by her kindness and amazing spirit will never forget her. She will soar through the gates of heaven.
Cecilia was predeceased by her father, Patrick and her mother, Annie (Maillet) Arsenault, son John Jr., brothers, Mose, Wilfred, William and Joseph Arsenault, sisters, Margret Spagnoletti and Theresa Walsh.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Brewer will be Friday, April 6, 2001, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Funeral mass for the late Mrs. Cecilia Brewer will be held at Holy Redeemer Church, Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Family flowers only, donations in Cecilia’s memory can be made to Palliative Care CBRH.
