Jessie Beatrice MacDonald
98, Sydney
Jessie B. MacDonald, 98, of Sydney, N.S., died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney.
Born in Port Hastings, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (Hall) MacDonald.
She worked as a telephone operator for 40 years and was a member of the Maritime Telephone Pioneers.
Jessie was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by her nephew, Stan (Jeanette) MacDonald, Dartmouth and Florida. Also by six grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Sadie; her brother, ‘Big Alex’; her nephew, Derrick; and her grandniece, Corinne.
Visitation will be held at MacGillivray Guest Home Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. with the funeral mass Tuesday 9 a.m. at the MacGillivray Guest Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Rankin officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney.
Edward Joseph Boudreau
81, Sydney
Edward J. Boudreau, 81, of Sydney, died suddenly Monday, April 16, 2001, at home.
Born in Louisdale, Richmond County, he was the son of the late Walter and Clara (Landry) Boudreau.
He worked at the Sydney Steel Corporation in the Open Hearth Department for several years.
He is survived by brothers, Harry (Theresa), Joseph (Sadie), Louis (Marie), sisters, Mary MacDonald and Stella Doucet, sister-in-law, Rose Boudreau, all of Sydney. Also by several nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by brothers, Joseph, Toronto and Amedee, Sydney, sisters, Cecelia Krzwda and Lucy Forrester.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of N.S. or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Vivian Burgess
75, Sydney
Vivian Burgess, 75, a resident of Breton Bay Nursing Home, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, April 17, 2001.
Born in New Waterford, she is survived by one sister, Annie May, Ontario; two brothers, John, New Victoria, and Silver, Big Pond.
She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Christina MacKay and by a sister, Florence and a brother, Danny.
Cremation has taken place. Service will be held at St. Agnes Church at a later date, with burial in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home.
Helen Ann 'Sis' Gouthro
51, Sydney
Helen ‘Sis’ Gouthro, 51, of Sydney, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of Helen (Wojick) Tynski of Breton Bay and the late Stanley Tynski.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney. Sis was employed with the Royal Bank of Canada in Sydney.
Surviving are her husband, Gregory C. Gouthro; two daughters, Natalie, Ottawa, and Amy, at home; a son, Mark, at home; three sisters, Sr. Rosalie, Sisters of St. Martha, Antigonish, Florence (Fred) Currie, Sydney, and Raylene MacAskill, Glace Bay; four brothers, Ray, Bob, Michael and Edward, all of Sydney.
Predeceased by a brother, Stan, sister, Frances ‘Cookie’ Nearing and two siblings in infancy.
The late Mrs. Gouthro will have visitation tonight (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, April 20, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony Daniel Church, Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Elizabeth (Betty) Burke
73, Sydney
Elizabeth (Betty) Martina Burke, 73, formerly of Carang Drive, Sydney, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Little Lorraine, she was a daughter of the late Bernard and Theresa (Campbell) Burke.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by her husband, William (Bill) L. Burke; sisters, Rita (Everett) Bussey, Sydney, Bernadine Perry, Little Lorraine; brothers, Fred, Little Lorraine, Basil (Beryl), Sydney, Alphonse (Cora), Antigonish, and Ernest (Lauria), Marion Bridge.
She was predeceased by a brother, Ambrose and sister, Camilla.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Friday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel, Rev. Leo Boone officiating.
Ashley Dawn MacNeil

The MacNeil family regret to announce the passing of Ashley Dawn MacNeil.
Ashley was born Nov. 29, 2000, at the QEII in Halifax. Ashley passed away April 18, 2001, at the CBRH in Sydney.
She is the daughter of Kim MacNeil and Ernie. Ashley Dawn is also survived by her special uncle, Craig and her loving grandparents.
The funeral for Ashley Dawn was held April 19, 2001 at T.W. Curry Chapel. She was laid to rest at the Resurrection Cemetery.
She brought great joy to her family, and in the short time we spent with Ashley she could not have made us any prouder of her. Her memories will be cherished forever and she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the QEII in Halifax and the CBRH in Sydney for taking such good care of our beautiful baby. We would also like to thank all those who took part in the service, those who sent prayers, thoughts, flowers and donations. Any donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
