Eileen E. Chiasson

Eileen E. Chiasson, 79, of Cabot Street, Sydney, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Mary M. (Walsh) Pitts.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney. She was employed in the general office with Sydney Steel Corp. Eileen was a loving mother, grandmother and friend.
She is survived by her husband, Alex Chiasson; daughter, Juanita (Mrs. Blair Westhaven), Lower Sackville; two sons, Richard (Rosie), Toronto, and Leonard (Linda), Howie Centre; and five grandchildren.
Predeceased by her sisters, Marie Campbell and Margaret Hynes; and a brother, William Pitts.
The late Mrs. Chiasson will have visitation Tuesday, Apr. 24, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney, with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Mary Evelyn French
87, Sydney
Mary Evelyn French, 87, of Sydney, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001 at Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late William and Millie (Brown) Lawrence.
She was a member of the Steelworkers and Pensioners Club, Club 55, and Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty (Jim) McGreggor, Ottawa, Ont., Mary (Gord) Mollons, Burlington, Ont., and Margaret (Fred) Harlinson, Guelph, Ont.; three sons, Joseph (June), Barrie, Ont., Malcolm, Sydney and Frankie, Brampton, Ont.; 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Frank; two sisters, Margaret and Florence; two brothers, Cameron and William.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Monday). Funeral service in the chapel Tuesday 11 a.m. with interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Beatrice MacAulay
Sydney / Reserve Mines
Beatrice MacAulay of 70 Erinmore Dr., Sydney, and formerly a resident of 17 Station St., Reserve Mines, passed away peacefully at home Monday, April 23, 2001.
Born in Reserve Mines in 1902, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Donovan) McNabb.
She resided in Reserve Mines for most of her life before moving to Sydney in 1994. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines, and also St. Augustine’s in Sydney. Mrs. MacAulay was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She greatly enjoyed crocheting and reading and spending time with her great-grandchildren.
Mrs. MacAulay is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Broderick, with whom she resided; granddaughter, Janice (Mrs. Harold McIntyre) and grandson, James Broderick, all of Sydney. Also surviving are her three loving great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Lindsey McIntyre and Taylor Broderick. She is also survived by four nephews, D’Arcy McNabb, Glace Bay, Reggie McNeil, Yellowknife, N.W.T., Vincent (Bubba) McNeil, Glace Bay, and William McNeil, Dominion.
She was predeceased by her husband, James in 1959, one sister, Catherine McNeil, a brother, Patrick McNabb, and a niece, Patsy (McNabb) Jones.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Beatrice MacAulay will be held Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. Burial in the parish cemetery with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating.
Mary Margaret MacNeil
Sydney
Mary Margaret MacNeil, 83, of St. Anthony Drive, formerly of Reserve, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Gardiner Mines, she was a daughter of the late Neil George and Mary Margaret (MacDonald) MacNeil.
She is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at Breton Bay Nursing Home at a later date. Interment in Gordon United Church Cemetery, Reserve Mines.
Memorial donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or to a charity of choice.
Perley Cameron
81, Sydney
Perley Cameron, 81, of 931 Kings Road, Sydney, died peacefully surrounded by his children on Tuesday, April 24, 2001.
Born March 18, 1920, in Sydney, N.S., he was the son of the late John Henry Cameron and Rosamund (Carson) Cameron.
A veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Cape Breton Highlanders and the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. On June 6, 1944, he drove a bren gun carrier into the water at Juno Beach in the storming of Normandy on D-Day which was the beginning of almost a year of continuing battle for the ‘North Novies’ who fought through France and Falaise Gap, then along the coast of Europe to Holland where war ended as they reached the Zuider Zee.
Perley returned home to work at Sysco and retired with 35 years of service. He was a member of the Branch 12 Legion in Sydney and past officer of the executive committee.
Perley enjoyed the annual reunions of the North Nova Scotia Highlanders which he had joined shortly after being transferred to active duty from the reserves.
He also had a keen interest in digging clams, collecting oysters and mussels, taking vacations with his trailer. Other hobbies were singing, playing guitar, dancing and of course, auto repair.
Perley is survived and will be sadly missed by his three sons, John (Muriel ‘Babs’), Sydney, Robert (Cindy) and Paul, both of Calgary; two daughters, Colleen (Peter) Martin and Barbara, both of Sydney; a sister, Ella MacLean, British Columbia; two brothers, Lelland and Baden, both of Ontario. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Carrie, Brandy, Christopher, Devin, Joshua, Arron, Kyle, Erica, and Autumn, and a great-grandchild, Kaija.
Perley will also be missed by special niece, Peggy Hickey, British Columbia.
Perley was predeceased by his wife, Joanne, two sons, Ronnie and Jamie, brothers, Irving, Gordon, Edgar, and sister, Viola Cameron Surette.
Visitation for the late Mr. Cameron will be held today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. A ‘celebration of life’ service will be held at 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to the Veteran’s Comfort Fund.
Sadie Short
85, Sydney
Sadie Short, 85, of Sydney, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at home.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Materria (Khattar) Abbass.
She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy (Joe) Cooper, Belleville, Ont.; one son, Louis (Rachael), Sydney; one sister, Emily, Sydney; five grandchildren, Karen, Howard, Brian, Myra and Frank and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Thomas Short, two brothers, Abbie and Louis.
The late Mrs. Short will have visitation tonight (Thursday, April 26) from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
