Joanne Cameron
70, Sydney
Joanne Cameron, 70, of 931 Kings Road, Sydney, died peacefully surrounded by her loving husband and children on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000.
Born Aug. 21, 1930, in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Campbell) MacNeil.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Joanne was past president of the ladies auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12. Her love of the Mira found her many a summer night sitting by the campfire singing with all her Mira buddies and family.
She is survived and will be sadly missed by her devoted and loving husband of 50 years, Perley; four sons, John (Babs, Muriel), Sydney, Ronald (Denise), Sydney Mines, Robert (Cindy) and Paul, both of Calgary; two daughters, Colleen (Peter Martin) and Barbara Cameron, both of Sydney. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Carrie, Brandy, Christopher, Devin, Joshua, Arron, Kyle, Erica and Autumn; one great-grandchild, Kayja.
Joanne was predeceased by her son, Jamie in infancy and two brothers, Long John and Leonard MacNeil.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Cameron will be held today (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Cremation to follow.

Florence Violet Lewis
80, Sydney
Florence Violet Lewis, 80, of Catherine Street, Sydney, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Burton and Elizabeth (Tryggresson) Chase.
Surviving are her daughter, Sharon (Earl) MacEachern, Mira; sons, Douglas (Karen), Bedford, Gary (Karen) Corunna, Ont. and Gordon (Diane), Porter’s Lake; a sister, Audrey lrwin, Scarborough, Ont.; nine grandchildren, Shauna, Leanne, Jason, Aaron, Jody, Adrienne, Derek, Ryan, and Jasmine and a great-granddaughter, Margaret Florence.
Florence was predeceased by her husband, Douglas, and brothers, Henry, Ernie, George, Burton and William.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m., with funeral service held in the chapel Saturday 11 a.m., Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Society, Palliative Care, or a charity of choice.
Florence was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Catherine (Kaye) Chiasson Steele
84, Sydney
Catherine (Kaye) Chiasson Steele, 84, died Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Margaree Forks, Jan. 7, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Henry (Norie) and Louise (Chiasson) Chiasson.
She is survived by daughters, Ann and husband, Doug Falconer, Sydney, Rose and husband, Robert Belot, Calgary; sons, Robert and wife, Josie, Sydney; John and wife, Caroline, Coldstream, B.C.; sisters, Rose Leblanc, Margaree Forks, Grace Bourque, Salem, N.H., Dora Cameron, Toronto and Isabel Wludyka, Sydney; brothers, Alex Dan, Sydney and George, Detroit; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Steele in 1994, sisters, Margaret, Annie, Sophie and Sr. Christina, brothers, Bernie, Victor, William, Vincent, Leo, Arthur, Fabian and John.
The remains are resting at Sydney Memorial Chapel Friday, 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service at St. Michael’s Church Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Peter MacLeod officiating. Burial in St. Michael’s Cemetery, East Margaree.
Victor Joseph Leterte
82, Sydney
Victor Joseph Leterte, 82 of the MacGillivray Guest Home, formerly of 87 Harold St., Sydney, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at the home, surrounded by his children and loving wife of 50 years.
Born Sept. 14, 1917 in Sydney, he was the son of the late Victor and Baptistine (Briand) Leterte.
Victor was a very religious and devoted family man. He was a member of St. Joseph’s parish and the parish men’s club for over 30 years. Victor was employed with the Sydney Steel Plant, retiring from the blooming mill in 1980, after 46 years of service. He was an avid skater and bowler.
Surviving are his wife, the former Clare Murphy; one daughter, Victoria, Sydney; three sons, Paul (Karen), Sydney, Dale, Sydney and Christopher, Antigonish; one sister, Augusta (TaTa) MacKeigan, Sydney; six grandchildren, Terry, Ryan, Jennifer, Paul Marcus, Chelsea and Riley; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Morgan.
He was predeceased by one brother, Leon.
The late Mr. Leterte will have visitation Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

John William Dearing
57, Sydney
John William Dearing, 57, of Sydney, passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Robert Edgar and Bertha (Myette) Dearing. John was a Jehovah Witness and owner and operator of J.D. Disposals in Sydney.
Surviving are his wife the former Margaret Cameron; three sons, Shawn (Aimee), Ontario, Mark (Karen), Sydney, and Kyle, Ontario; five sisters, Julie Patterson, Kentville, Jean Trudell, Eliza O’Brien, Carol (Don) Tinney, Louise Kirkwood, all of Ontario; three brothers, Mel, Sydney, Harry (Marlyn), and Gideon, both of Ontario; four grandchildren, Tyler, Justin, Jamie Lee, and Grayson.
Predeceased by his sister Mary Mercer and three brothers, Art, Bobby, and Gordon.
The late Mr. Dearing had visitation from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) in T.W. Curry’s Parkview Chapel, Rev. Stewart Keizer officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Elizabeth (Betty) Lloy
Sydney
Elizabeth (Betty) Lloy of 79 Whitney Ave., Sydney, N.S., passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000.
Born Aug. 20, 1922, at Alma, Pictou Co., N.S., she was the daughter of the late Lena and O’Dell Baylee.
Betty will be sadly missed by her husband of 55 years John; daughter Sharon MacKay (Elmer), Lorne, Pictou Co. and Sydney; son Douglas, Sydney; brother Doug Brown, New Glasgow.
After marriage, Betty moved from Pictou County to Halifax and subsequently moved to Sydney where her husband was employed by the CNR. Exceptionally family oriented, she was keenly interested in music and current events. She was an adherent of the United Church of Canada. Betty was kind, generous and loved and respected greatly by her many friends.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Interment was held in Christ Anglican Church Cemetery in Stellarton.
