Freda Elizabeth McCarthy
70, Sydney / New Waterford
Freda Elizabeth McCarthy, 70, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (McDonald) MacNamara. Freda was a former resident of 54 Holland St. in Reserve Mines. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.
She is survived by one daughter Jocelyn McCarthy, Newfoundland; two sons, Martin and Leonard, both of Toronto; brother Leo MacNamara, Reserve Mines; five sisters, Rita, Rosaline, Jane Buchanan, all of Glace Bay, Margaret Gardiner, Port Morien, and Mary Martin, Ontario. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Dominique, Danielle and John Francis.
Freda was predeceased by her husband Martin McCarthy, who died Aug. 4, 1992. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Vincent and Joseph, and a sister, Carmella.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A memorial mass will be held today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, Fr. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
David Robertson
76, Sydney
David Robertson, 76, of 45 Campbell St., Sydney, peacefully passed away at Breton Bay Nursing Home, Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Thomas and Christine Robertson. Dave was a member of Sacred Heart Parish.
Dave worked at the Sydney Steel Plant as a machinist for 46 years before retiring in 1988. He was a member of Ashby Legion, Branch 138.
In Dave’s earlier years he was well known in sports, which included baseball, boxing, hockey and later on as an avid bowler. He enjoyed them all, but his greatest joy was spending time in Irish Vale with his family and friends.
Dave is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Annie (Aboud) Robertson; five sons, David Jr. (Irene), North Sydney, Kenny (Barbara), Dartmouth, Donnie, at home, Gregory, Sydney, Eddie (Kathy), Sydney; four daughters, Helen McLellan (Bill), Sydney, Carol Anne Youden (Robbie), Sydney, Roseanne Cameron (Jamie), Sydney, Michelle Morrison (Peter), Bedford; 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tommy and Ernest (Nicky) of Sydney and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Ina and brother, Peter.
Visitation will take place today (Tuesday) at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society.
Mary Rose Sheppard
Sydney
Margaret Rose Sheppard, of 11 Rose Terrace, Sydney, passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 1, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (MacDonald) Sheppard. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Church.
She is survived by one daughter Marie, New Jersey; two sons, Terry, Halifax, and Bobby, Brampton, Ont.; three sisters, Betty Brookman, Kay Young, and Jane Sheppard, all of Sydney; three brothers, Michael, Toronto, Vincent, Dartmouth, and David, Sydney; two aunts, Mary MacDonald and Catherine MacDonald, both of Sydney.
The late Margaret Sheppard had visitation Sunday, Sept. 3, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on the second level of the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass was held 2 p.m. Monday in Holy Redeemer Church with Father E. MacDonald officiating. Interment in St. Theresa’s Parish Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Margaret May Huett
Sydney
Margaret May Huett of 39 Willow St., Sydney, passed away at home on Friday, Sept. 8, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Mary Alice (Sampson) Campbell.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s parish, Sydney. Margaret enjoyed the company of her friends. She was an avid dart player, card player and fisherwoman. She was a member of Club 55, the Steelworkers and Pensioners Club, the Whitney Pier Seniors and Pensioners Club and the Spanish River Seniors Club.
She will be sadly missed by three daughters, Charlotte (Robert) Oxby, Orillia, Ont., Ellen (Robert) Chiasson and Valerie (Mike) MacKeigan, both of Sydney; three sons, Raymond (Sylvia), Halifax, Richard (Cathy) and Darryl (Lorna), both of Sydney; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles, John and Archie and stepmother, Mary Campbell, all of Dutch Brook.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond (René) in 1992, a brother, John Angus and a sister, Selena.
The late Mrs. Huett will have visitation today (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa’s Church with the Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Charles Gary Durnford
47, Sydney
Charles Gary Durnford, 47, of 690 Union St., New Waterford, formerly of Thomas St., Sydney, passed away Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at his group home.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Frank and Ada (Collier) Durnford.
He was a member of Christ Church, Sydney. For a number of years after his father passed away, Charles lived at Mary’s Hill Residence, Mabou, and then he lived in New Waterford following the closure of Mary’s Hill.
He is survived by two sisters, Cynthia (Mrs. Blair Cooke), Sydney and Kim (Mrs. Jeff Wood), Lower Sackville; eight brothers, Jabez (Betty), Wayne, both of Scarborough, Ont., Robert (Audrey), Kanata, Ont., Frank (Anne), Westmount, N.S., Victor (Pam), Halifax, Harold, Toronto, David (Irene), Timmons, Ont., and Todd (Michelle), Scarborough, Ont.
Predeceased by two nephews Christopher and Geoffrey.
The late Mr. Durnford will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level, Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. in Christ Church Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Albert L. "Reddy" Moules
87, Sydney
Albert L. “Reddy” Moules, 87, of 151 Rear French St., Sydney, passed away Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Bessy (Covey) Moules.
Albert was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier, and was employed with Sydney Steel Corporation for a number of years. He was also self-employed for many years until retiring in 1994.
He is survived by five daughters, Mary Broussard (Fred), Sydney, Rachel Nickless (Stuart), Sydney, Helen Conohan, Ontario, Shirley Porter, Ontario, and Annie Sullivan, Sydney; three sons, Albert “Bunt” (Caroline), Val (Sharon), both of Ontario, and Daniel (Rose), Sydney; a sister Annie Binns, Sydney.
He was predeceased by his first wife Rachel McGrady and his second wife, Lillian MacNeil; son, James; daughter, Edna; and several brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 14, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, second level. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
