Raymond Alphonse Pettipas
80, Sydney
Raymond Alphonse Pettipas, 80, of EIwood Avenue, Sydney, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Poulamon, he was a son of the late Clarence and Mary (Provost) Pettipas. He was retired from Sydney Steel. He was a veteran of the Second World War and member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, Whitney Pier. He was also a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier.
Raymond is survived by his wife, the former Annie Rita Fortune; three daughters, Yvonne Pettipas, Pam Kendall, Janice Pettipas, all of Sydney; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a son Raymond, Toronto; a sister, Ada Cameron, Sydney; and a brother Francis, Sydney.
Raymond was predeceased by one brother, Joseph.
There will be no visitation. Interment will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Philip Amos James Fifield
44, Sydney
Philip Amos James Fifield, 44, Townsend Street, Sydney, passed away of heart failure, on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of Maude Fifield and the late Edward Fifield.
Besides his mother, Philip is survived by his sister, Diane (Peter) Jessome, Greenwood, N.S.; and brothers, David, Sydney, and Dennis (Evelyn), Balls Creek.
He was predeceased by brothers, Lawrence and Keith.
Philip will be sadly missed by his friends and neighbors.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Wednesday 10 a.m., Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Pearl Mary Powell
73, Sydney
Mrs. Pearl Mary Powell, 73, of 14 Brown St., Sydney, passed away after a lengthy illness at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, Sept. 18, 2000.
Born in Sydney, N.S., she was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Creighton (Cracker) Powell, as well as parents, George and Bertha (Fougere) Lewis. Also brothers, Charlie, Ralph, Merle, Eddie, Archie and Nick Lewis, sisters, Rita Lewis in infancy, Betty (Lewis) Monohan, Rita (Fraser) Usher and Dolly (Lewis) Bunn.
Pearl had been a long-time member of C.B. Crafts A Plenty, Home Crafters and the Time Out Programs at St. Joseph’s Church in Sydney until her illness. Pearl was an avid craftsperson well known for her quilts, imagination and sense of humour. A self-made businesswoman who was capable of putting her hand to any task.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon E. (Powell) Troke; sons, Warren Powell (Shelley Wiley), Ontario, Bill Ryan (Elaine Aitkens), Ontario, Tom Ryan, Ontario, and brothers, Warren Lewis and George Fraser.
She will be forever missed but not forgotten by her family and friends especially her nine grandchildren, Christopher, Adam, Warren, Andrew, Cathy, Billy, Bob, Jonathan and Andrew; six great-grandchildren in Ontario. Also a numerous amount of nieces and nephews.
Visitation at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Tuesday 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Thursday 11 a.m. Trinity Church, Whitney Pier, with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment East Mount Cemetery.

Rowena Mitchelmore Joseph
Sydney
Rowena Mitchelmore Joseph of Sydney formerly of Green Island, Nfld., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at home.
Born at Green Island, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Norman and Lavenia (White) Mitchelmore of Green Island Cove, Nfld.
She is survived by her husband, Arnold Joseph; four daughters, Sheila Genge (Wallace), Rose Samson (Andrew), Amanda Samson (Claude) and Collette Samson (David); three sons, Donald Samson Jr. (Myrtle), Maitland Samson (Marilyn) and Aaron Joseph. Also surviving are one sister, Bernette Hankison (Bob), and two brothers, Winsor Mitchelmore (Virtue) and Byron Mitchelmore (Emma). She is survived by six grandchildren, Sheldon, Philip, Kelly, Sean, Mitchell and Nicholas and two great-grandchildren, Sheldon Jr. and Austin.
She was predeceased by a brother, Maitland and a sister, Amanda.
The late Mrs. Joseph will have visitation at the Church of the Advent, Plum Point, Nfld. Friday and Saturday with funeral to be held at 12 p.m. Saturday at the church. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery, Green Island Cove, Nfld.

Alexander Hugh (Sandy) MacInnis
Sydney
Alexander Hugh (Sandy) MacInnis of 467 St. Peter’s Rd., Sydney, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at the QEII Health Care Complex, Halifax.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Gus and Agnes (Byrne) MacInnis.
He was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney. Sandy was very active in his earlier years in hockey and baseball circles and continued his interest in both to the present. He was employed at Sydney Steel Corp. in various departments for 37 years, retiring in 2000.
Surviving are his wife, the former Carol (Kay) MacKinnon; two daughters, Carol (Ken) Gillis, Maine, and Karen (Brad), Calgary; one son, Gus (Jill), Calgary. Also surviving are three sisters, Mary (Felcian) Hachey, Chatham, N.B., Jeannie (Mike) MacMullin, Saint John, N.B. and Paul (Bob) Belanger, Charlottetown, P.E.I., and a brother, Edward (Elizabeth), Kingston, N.S. He is survived by one grandson, Mark Gillis.
The late Mr. MacInnis will have visitation Friday in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Jim Kelly
83, Sydney
James Richard Kelly, 83, of Grand Lake Road, Sydney, passed away Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at his home.
Born at West Louisbourg (Old Town), he was the son of late Richard and Ada (Sampson) Kelly.
He was a member of St. Augustine's Parish, Grand Lake Road. A veteran of the Second World War, he served with the Royal Canadian Army. He was employed at the Sydney Steel Corp. as a carpenter for over 35 years, retiring in 1981. In his earlier years, James was an avid fisherman. He also had a keen interest in gardening and loved the enjoyment his flowers brought to others. He dearly loved his grandchildren and took great pride in their accomplishments. James was always there to lend a helping hand to all who needed it.
Surviving are his wife, the former Beatrice Simoneau; sons, Gordon (Lindy), Ontario and Gerald (Deborah), Glace Bay; five sisters, Mrs. Irene Thomas, Mrs. Blanche MacDonald, Mrs. Elizabeth Kehoe, all of Sydney, Mrs. Theresa Durham, Dartmouth, and Mrs. Mary LeClair, London, Ont.; two brothers, Michael (Lillian), Detroit, and Lawrence (Elizabeth), Brandon, Manitoba; six grandchildren, Chappelle, Christopher, Zackery, Riley, Donald and Tammy.
Predeceased by a brother, Aubrey.
The late Mr. Kelly will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Monday in St. Augustine's Church, Grand Lake Road, with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Interment in West Louisbourg Cemetery (Old Town).
