Dorothy (Dot) Marie MacNeil
83, Sydney
Dorothy (Dot) Marie MacNeil, 83, Breton Bay Nursing Home, passed away, at the residence, on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Rod and Josephine (MacNeil) MacAdam.
Dot was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish and the CWL. She was a retired schoolteacher who taught at St. Anthony’s School, Glace Bay, and later at Lakevale School, in special education.
Surviving are her sons, Dave, Canso, N.S. and John, Maple Ridge, B.C.; a sister, Anna Floyd, Sydney; brothers, Alex, Antigonish, Rod, Halifax, and Steve, Glace Bay; and three grandchildren, Meghan, Erin, and Sean.
Dot was predeceased by her husband, John D., in 1997, a sister, Mary Doyle and a brother, Donald.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Church, Monday 2 p.m., with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Jack Mirao
39, Sydney
Jack Mirao, 39, of 318 East Broadway St., Sydney, died tragically in a car accident on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel and will be announced at a later date.
Marie Irma (Harris) O'Keefe
62, Sydney
Marie Irma (Harris) O’Keefe, 62, The Cove Guest Home, Sydney, passed away at the home on Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late George William and Phyllis (Fry) Harris.
Marie was a member of St. Alban’s Church and the Ladies Church Guild.
Surviving are her son, Stephen Vincent, a sister, Myrtle Burns, and brothers, Albert, Arnold, Melvin and Winston.
She was predeceased by her brother, Howard.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Alban’s Church, Monday 11 a.m. with Rev. Doug Chard officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Michael Lawrence Dilney (Campbell)
19, Sydney
Michael Lawrence Dilney (Campbell), 19, of Sydney, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a lengthy illness of two years.
Born in Edmonton, he was the son of Kevin (Red) Douglas Campbell and Mary Catherine (Tammy) Dilney, both of Sydney.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Whitney Pier. Michael was a former Honours Student at Sydney Academy. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish with his father on the Margaree. In his earlier years, he was involved in soccer and also as a volunteer worker with bingo at the Ukrainian Hall.
Besides his parents, he is survived by grandmother, Kaye Dilney, of Sydney; step-mother, Christine Campbell, of Sydney; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by paternal grandparents, Cosmos Angus and Margaret Mae Campbell; maternal grandfather, John Max Dilney; and a cousin, Brittney Campbell, in infancy.
The late Mr. Dilney (Campbell) will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Whitney Pier, Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice or a scholarship fund in memory of Michael which will be presented each year at graduation at Sydney Academy.
Mary Ann Harnum
76, Sydney
Mary Ann Harnum, 76, of Breton Bay Nursing Home passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the home.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Jessie (Stevens) Porter. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Parish. Mary worked at the City Hospital, retiring after 49 years.
Left to mourn are her husband, Harold; two sons, David (Donna) and Harold (Anna); two grandchildren, James and Brittany; four brothers, Melvin (Joyce), Raymond (Bev), Edward (Phoebe), and Alfred; one sister, Gloria (Barry) Swift.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Hazel and Elsie; brothers, Chesley and Clayton.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service in St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Tuesday 2 p.m. with Rev. Glenn Kent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Infant Cameron Bradley Leudy
Sydney
Infant Cameron Bradley Leudy, son of Albert and Ashley (MacPhee) Leudy, of 128 MacAulay’s Lane, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Cameron Bradley is survived by one brother, Tyson, age four, and one sister, Desiree, age five. He is also survived by paternal grandparents, Ray and Judy MacPhee, of Dominion, and maternal grandparents, Tony and Mary Leudy, of New Waterford; also great-grandmothers, Kay MacPhee and Alice Ryan, both of New Waterford.
A private family mass will take place on Monday at St. Eugenes Church, Dominion, Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery, New Waterford.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Gussie McLellan
86, Sydney
Gussie McLellan, 86, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Hugh and Martha (Joseph) McLellan. He owned and operated the Press Club in Sydney and later co-owned and operated the Ceilidh Lounge in the Isle Royale Hotel. Boxing was his main interest, having promoted many events in Canada and England for over 50 years, with around 500 promotions to his credit. Many of the participants later fought for world titles. He was the first to bring the closed circuit events to Cape Breton and the Maritimes and also live promotions in Glace Bay, Sydney, Halifax, St. John’s, Moncton and Toronto. In his early years he fought in New England area and the Maritimes, having won the Maritime and Eastern Canadian Feather-weight Championship. He was always willing to give a helping hand to the needy or any charity.
He served four years in the Canadian Provost Corps during the war from 1942-1946. He is a member of the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame and the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Council Knights of Columbus and a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club in Sydney.
Surviving are a sister, Sadie; brothers, Jimmy and Alex.
Predeceased by brothers, Dan, Alphonse, Gerald, Archie, Gerard and sister Mary.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. John the Baptist Church, New Aberdeen, Rev. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery. Reception to follow in the parish hall.
