Gussie McLellan
86, Sydney
Mass of Resurrection, 2:30 p.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, New Aberdeen with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating.
Gussie, who died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay was predeceased by a brother, Clarence.
He is also a member of the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame and was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12.
Jack Mirao
39, Sydney
Joaquim (Jack Jr.) Mirao, 39, of 318 East Broadway, Whitney Pier, Sydney, passed away on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
Born in Buarcos Figueira Da Foz, Portugal, and raised in Louisbourg, he later became a resident of Whitney Pier. He was the son of Joaquim (Jack Sr.) and Manuela (Maria) (Oliveira) Mirao, of Louisbourg.
Jack was a paper carrier during his childhood while attending school. He was involved in Sea Cadets, baseball and hockey during his childhood. He graduated from George D. Lewis High School, Louisbourg, attended vocational school, worked at National Sea on fishing trawlers and was self-employed with his dad as a fisherman. He worked with the Coast Guard from 1980 until the present, as an engineer. He was also the owner and operator of Kay-Vic Shuttle Service Inc. His business is named after his two daughters.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his loving wife, Susan (MacDonald) Mirao; two precious daughters, Kayla and Victoria, both at home; two sisters, Gloria (Jeff) Donald, Browns Hat, St. John, N.B., and Elizabeth, Louisbourg; both maternal and paternal grandmothers, Gloria Oliveira and Silvina Mirao; several nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends.
Jack is predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandfathers, David Oliveira and Antonio Martins Mirao.
Visitation for the late Mr. Mirao will be today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on the second level. Funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, Sydney, with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Cremation to follow.

Annie Christena Morrison

Annie Morrison, of 436 Cabot St., Sydney, N.S., passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000.
Born in Sydney, N.S., on Aug. 13, 1910, Annie was the daughter of the late Rannie and Mae (Ferguson) Matheson.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Angus, and infant son, Ranald, three brothers, Johnie, Alex, and Norman and two sisters, Florence and Bessie.
She is survived by her son, David and his wife, Carol; three grandchildren, James, Jennifer, and Christa, all of Banff, Alta.; sisters-in-law, Lois Matheson and Lena Matheson, of Sydney; and two brothers, Neil, Marshfield, Mass. and Donald, Sydney.
Annie Morrison was an active member in Westminister Church, as well as the Cove Auxiliary.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Friday) 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Saturday at 1 p.m. with Rev. Neil McLean officiating. Burial to follow at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

Mary Anne Gillis
84, Sydney
Mary Anne Gillis, 84, of Vista Heights, Sydney, passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a sudden heart attack.
Born in Gillis Lake, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Mary (MacIsaac) Gillis.
She was a devout member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney. She had been employed in the office of Eastern Bakeries for 33 years, until her retirement.
Mary will be remembered by all those who knew and loved her for her unselfishness, generosity and kind deeds toward everyone she encountered throughout her life.
She is survived by a brother, Allan Gillis, East Bay and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Catherine Steele, East Bay and five brothers, James, Ronald, John, Paul and Augustine. She was also predeceased by two half-sisters, Mary Margaret and Jessie and one half-brother, James Andrew.
Visitation for the late Miss Gillis will be held Sunday, Oct. 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Monday, Oct. 9 at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Anthony O'Connor officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Parish Cemetery, East Bay.
Annie Catherine (Kaye) Sheppard
78, Sydney
Annie Catherine (Kaye) Sheppard, 78, a resident of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Whitney Pier, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret (Morrison) MacLeod.
She is survived by one son, Hector (wife Donna) Murphy, Sydney; stepson, Johnnie Bartlett, two stepdaughters, Betty McGrady and Kay Warner, all of London, Ont.; and longtime family friend, John (Neilie) MacLeod, MacKinnon Harbour, Victoria County; one sister, Evelyn (John) Homnick, Sydney River; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also survived by three nieces, three nephews, and 10 step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Twice married she was predeceased by her first husband, Johnnie Bartlett, second husband, Charles (Shep) Sheppard and sister, Tina.
Visitation will be held Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Monday, 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Donald J. MacDonald officiating. Burial in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Joseph Arthur Crane
81, Sydney / Sydney Mines
Joseph Arthur Crane, 81, a native of Sydney Mines, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at his home at 40 Christopher Crescent, Sydney.
Born and educated in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late James and Lydia (Brown) Crane. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife and companion, Mary (Cordeau) Crane, two loving daughters, Anne (Roby) Semerdjian, Vancouver, B.C., and Brenda (Greg) Bezer, Ajax, Ontario, grandchildren, Kathryn (Greg) Hurst, Courtice, Ontario and David Bezer, Ajax, Ontario; JoAnne, Gregory and Robert Semerdjian, Vancouver, B.C.; and great-granddaughter Gabrielle Emma Hurst, Courtice, Ontario. He is also survived by loving brothers, Frederick, Sydney Mines, Bernard, Margaree, and sister, Isabel (Crane) MacNeil, Sydney Mines; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James.
A veteran of World War II, Arthur was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders from 1939-1946. Corporal Crane was one of the first from the ranks commissioned as First Lieutenant on January 5, 1941. He served overseas in England, Africa and Italy, and on his return to Canada, served in Farnham, Quebec. After leaving the army in 1946, he became a social worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Montreal and Ottawa. He made his home in Montreal and later, in Chateauguay, Quebec. He retired in 1979 and took up residence in Sydney in 1991. He was a devout member of St. Joseph Parish, Sydney.
Arthur was noted for his hospitality and was most welcoming to all who came to his home. He loved music, played the piano and loved to listen to other musicians play, especially his wife Mary. He also enjoyed gardening and playing golf.
Visitation will be held at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, on Tuesday, Oct. 17, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, with Father Leo Cordeau officiating. Interment will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
