Mildred Lilly
87, Sydney
Mildred Lilly, 87, of George St., Sydney, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Bonavista, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Wm. and Alice (Mouland) Russell.
She was a member of St. John Anglican Church and the ladies guild.
She is survived by four daughters, Thelma (Elmer) MacKeigan, Sydney, Greta (Duncan) MacLeod, Sydney, Betty Lou (Laurie) Landry, and Mary (Reg) MacCormack, both of Toronto, Ont., a sister Greta (Ken) Wheeler, St. John’s, Nfld., 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a special friend Rod MacNeil.
Lilly’s son William passed away suddenly Saturday evening, Oct. 14, in Edmonton, Alberta.
Predeceased by her husband William, daughter Alice, and two brothers, Max and Clarence.
Visitation will be today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Service is Tuesday 10 a.m. in St. John Anglican Church, Rev. Glenn Kent officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to any charity.

John Angus MacCormack
72, Sydney
John Angus MacCormack, 72, of Columbia St., Sydney, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Gabarus, he was the son of the late Gordon and Edna M. (Harrison) MacCormack. He was employed as a chemist with Domtar in Montreal.
Survived by his wife Hazel (MacInnis), a daughter, Elaine, Halifax, a son, Bruce (Elizabeth), Winnipeg, three sisters, Sarah (Bob) Brown, Ottawa, Jean (Scott) Busby, Kingston, Ont., and Helen (Allister) Riley, Sydney, five brothers, James (Muriel), Coxheath, Donald (Rose), Sydney, Clarence (Alice), Regina, Gilbert (Marilyn), Ottawa, and Lloyd (Maxine), Howie Center.
Predeceased by a brother Calvin.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Ltd. on Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Service Wednesday 2 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Burial at Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Rev. Robert Lyle officiating.

Douglas J. Skinner
58, Sydney
Douglas J. Skinner, 58 years old, of 25 Rigby Rd., Sydney, N.S. passed, away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in the presence of loved ones on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, after a long and challenging battle with Melanoma Cancer.
Following graduation from the Sydney Academy, Doug entered the RCMP where he served duty in Regina, Saskatchewan, Newcastle and Moncton, N.B. He then made a career change into the insurance industry where he began with Underwriters Adjustment Bureau and then made a lateral move to Cunningham Lindsey Canada Ltd. serving as Branch Manager with both companies. Doug also served on the executive of various Insurance Fraternities, the Sydney Curling Club, and the Ben Eoin Ski Club. Doug was an avid sportsman and a member of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation. His great enthusiasm for living was continuously demonstrated through his sense of humor, his love of family and friends, and his courageous acceptance of his illness.
Doug was a devoted husband to his wife Marie (McNeil) Skinner. Father to Troy, his wife Nancy and their two children, Adam and Kate of New Glasgow, N.S., Trevor, his wife Terri-Lynn of Calgary, Alta., Todd, his wife Heather of Calgary, Alta., and twins Janice and Steven currently attending university in Nova Scotia. He is also survived by his mother Gertrude Skinner of Sydney, brothers, Ron of Toronto, Donald of Halifax, and Murray of Sydney and their families.
Doug was predeceased by his father Frederick Skinner in 1996.
Doug has been a faithful parishioner at St. Joseph’s Parish since 1980 and visitation was held at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St. on Sunday, Oct. 15, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and will be today (Monday) from 10-11:30 a.m. The funeral mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s Church, 40 Cabot St. with Rev. D. MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
It would be appreciated if donations in Doug’s memory be given to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or the Cape Breton Palliative Care Center at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, 1482 George St., Sydney, B1P 1P3.
The family extends sincere thanks to the staff of the Department of Onocolgy, The Department of Radiology, The O.R., The Intensive Care Unit, and the Floor 4D of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the tremendous care afforded to us.

Mary Margaret MacDonald
89, Sydney
Mary Margaret MacDonald, 89, of 5 Julie’s Walk, Halifax, and formerly of 77 French St., passed away peacefully, Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
Born in Big Beach, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Mary (Cameron) MacLean.
She was a former member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier. She had been employed for several years in New Bedford, Mass. as a cook, returning to Cape Breton In 1949.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann-Marie, Halifax; four sons, Charlie, Amsterdam, Holland, Jack (Edwina), Manotick, Ont., Joe and Frank, both of Vancouver; six grandchildren, Colin, Sean, Laila, Erin, Ian and Joseph.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Charles Senecal, her second husband, John A. MacDonald and by six brothers, Malcolm, John Angus, Johnnie Beagh, Roddy, Michael and Henry; six sisters, Rita, Betty, Agnes, Sadie, Mary and Catherine.
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacDonald will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Church, with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Oncology Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Peggy will always be remembered as the family focal point as demonstrated by the warmth and hospitality shown to all who knew and loved her.

Malcolm J. Ferguson
86, Sydney
Malcolm J. Ferguson, 86, of Douglas Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Norman and Mary Ann (Morrison) Ferguson.
He was a member of Sacred Heart parish and was also owner and operator of Ferguson’s Transport, Sydney.
Malcolm is survived by his wife, Catherine (Campbell); one daughter, Mary (Terry) Moore; three sons, Norman (Dianne), Michael (Lois) and Archie (Susan); one sister, Sadie Bates, Glace Bay; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Daniel.
Visitation for the late Mr. Ferguson will be held today (Thursday), Oct. 19 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney on the main level. Funeral mass will be Saturday, Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating.
Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Norman Morris
86, Sydney
Norman Morris, 86, of George Street, Sydney, formerly of Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully at home, Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the last surviving child of the late George and Hanna (Sellers) Morris.
Norm moved home to Cape Breton in 1974 and retired from the CNR to a cottage on Trout Brook Road. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a proud member of the Cape Breton Highlanders, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128 and St. Andrew’s United Church. He enjoyed bowling with Club 55 and the CN Pensioners Club, Sydney.
Surviving are his loving wife, Hilda Mae (Moore) Morris; daughters, Sharyn (Wallace) Armstrong, Chester Basin, N.S., and Beverly (George Folden) Morris, Orlando, Fla.; step-children, Ronald (Jenny) Mulholland, Lowe Sackville, N.S., Joan (Donald) Duggan, Kentville, N.S., and Dorris (Herbie) Westlake, Sackville, N.S.; grandchildren, Kathy Langton, Sydney, Gary (Vicky) Langton, Orleans, Ont., John (Shelly) Lillies, Lower Sackville, N.S., Aileen (Ronny) Thomas, Lawrencetown, N.S., and Carol and Cheryl Morris, British Columbia; nieces, Mary, Irene and Vonnie, Cape Breton and great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his son, Sonny (Ronald) Morris, sisters, Edna and Lucy, brothers, George, Bill, Albert, Edward and Harold and a nephew, George (Vivian) Morris.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, today (Friday) and Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Sunday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Memorial donations may be made to the N.S. Lung Association or to a charity of one’s choice.
