Mary Agnes Ferguson
83, Sydney
Mary Agnes Ferguson, 83, Tillock Drive, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Friday, Oct. 20, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Cecilia (Wadden) Pratt.
Mary was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her daughters, Sadie (Eric) Langley, Sydney, Mary (Joe) MacIntyre, Sydney, and Catherine MacLeod, Marion Bridge; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; cousin, Bernadette Currie, Dominion, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Norman in 1972, son, John Thomas, daughter, Ellen Ann, brother, Thomas, stepsister, Nellie Ross and stepbrother, Phillip.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel, Monday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone.
Memorial donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Rita MacLellan
80, Sydney
Rita Mary MacLellan, 80, of 97 Rockdale Ave., Sydney, passed away suddenly at her home, Friday, Oct. 20, 2000.
Born at Codroy Valley, Nfld. she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Monica (Downey) Sears.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney, and was a lifetime member of the parish CWL. Rita will be sadly missed by her loving family as well as her very close friends, Mary MacPherson, Sydney and sister-in-law, Dorothy O’Quinn, New Waterford.
Surviving are two daughters, Colleen (Harold) Kyte, Morrison Road, C.B. and Monica (Wayne) Hominick, Winnipeg, Man.; two sons, Hal (Heather), Sydney and Kerry (Frances), Sydney; two sisters, Kay (Johnny) Tompkins and Mrs. Carmela MacDonald, both of Antigonish; two brothers, Andy (Theresa) Sears and Jackie Sears, both of Antigonish; 11 grandchildren, Cherie (Steve) Lange, Shelly, Susan, Shaun, Tanya, Tracy, Ryan, Jan, Craig (Michelle) Hominick, Dana and Kyla.
She was predeceased by her husband, Nath, two sisters, Clara Forbes, Mary MacLellan and by a brother, Tommy Sears.
The late Mrs. MacLellan will have visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Monday, 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.
Jordie John Joseph Thompson

Jordie Thompson, three months, born July 13, 2000, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was the son of Lisa Thompson, Sydney and Charles O’Handley, Florence.
Jordie is survived by his maternal grandparents, Rob and Raylene Young, Mira; paternal grandparents, Diane (Mrs. Eddie Steele), Florence and Mr. Leo O’Handley, Boisdale; great-grandmother, Mary O’Handley, Barrochois; great-great-grandmother, Beulah Gallupe, New Brunswick; aunts, Lori (Mustafa) Yilmaz, Calgary, Kimberley O’Handley, Dartmouth; uncle, Steven O’Handley, Florence. Also loving namesake, Geordie Whyte; great-aunts, great-uncles and many cousins.
He was predeceased by great-grandfather, Ronald O’Handley, great-grandparents, Clarence and Mary Thompson, Sydney; great-grandparents, John and Annie White, Florence; grandfather, Joseph Thompson, Sydney; great aunt, Joan Thompson and great uncle, Jimmy Thompson.
Visitation for baby Jordie Thompson will be held today (Saturday) from 2-4 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Jordie is survived by paternal grandparents, Eddie and Diane Steele, of Florence, and Leo O’Handley, of Boisdale.
Anne Martha Carroll
74, Sydney
Anne Martha Carroll, 74, of Victoria Road, Sydney, formerly of Paris, Ont., and Avon, Mass., passed away Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, peacefully, surrounded by her family and friends.
She was born in Sydney, the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary (Whalen) Dunn. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and the first vice-president of the Whitney Pier Historical Society.
Anne is survived by six daughters, Patricia Lydon, Ellen Donnelly, Susan Sanger, of Avon, Mass., Theresa (Edward) Campbell, Weymouth, Mass., Donna (Allan) Sargent and Margaret Cratty, Onset, Mass.; two sons, Paul (Buddy) (Catherine), Lowell, Mass., and Kevin (Darlene), Vero Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Mamie Barrett, Paris, Ont., Daisy Dunn, Brantford, Ont., and Myrna Gillis, Sydney; four brothers, James, Paris, Ont., John, Frank and Bob, of Sydney; also cousin and best friend Rita Hareguy with whom she resided.
Anne was predeceased by her husband, Paul, on June 29, 2000; two brothers, Phil and Rory.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Sunday from 2-6 p.m. Funeral mass will be held today (Monday) at 9 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in New Calvary Cemetery.

Isabel Catherine Evans
87, Sydney
Isabel Catherine Evans R.N., 87, of MacGillivray Guest Home, passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000.
She was born in Sydney, daughter of the late John and Louise (MacNeil) MacGillivray. She was a registered nurse working in Inverness, Baddeck, and retired from the Jewish Hospital in Montreal. She was a member of St. Columba Presbyterian Church. A veteran of the Second World War, she served as a nurse in the position of lieutenant in R.C.A.M.C. from 1940-46.
Isabel was the last surviving member of the family.
She was predeceased by her husband, William, and a brother, Hugh George.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with the funeral service in the chapel on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery.
