Sister Rita MacInnis
77, Sydney
Sister Rita MacInnis (Sister St. Bernard), Congregation of Notre Dame, Sydney, died suddenly on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at Holy Angels Convent, Sydney, in the 77th year of her life and her 56th year as a Sister of the Congregation.
Besides her religious sisters and a wide circle of friends and colleagues, she leaves to mourn two brothers, Howard (Phyllis), Dartmouth, Lloyd “Buddy” (Dorothy), Lower Sackville, and one sister, Sister Catherine MacInnis, CND, St. Theresa Convent, Sydney. She is also the dearly loved and cherished aunt of many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was predeceased by her parents, Dan F. MacInnis and Mary Anne MacKenzie, of Grand Narrows, C.B.; four brothers, James, Joseph, Neil, and Malcolm; and two sisters, Helen “Girlie” MacPherson and Josephine “Mickey” Poirier.
Sister MacInnis was a native of Grand Narrows, C.B. and a graduate of Iona High School. She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1942 and made religious profession in August, 1944. She taught school at St. John’s Academy, New Glasgow, Don Bosco, and Holy Redeemer High School (where she was also the principal), Whitney Pier, and Holy Family High School, Inverness. In 1967, she became librarian at Xavier Junior College and later chief librarian at the University College of Cape Breton, retiring from that position in 1988 after serving the university for 21 years. During those years, she reorganized the library in line with modern approaches, made it more accessible to students, extended library hours, assessed current holdings and made recommendations for new books and periodicals. She also helped design the new library at UCCB. During her retirement years at Holy Angels Convent, she maintained a constant interest in her former students and in the advancement of education. She was also the community librarian.
Sister was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University. She received a Master of Library Science at Rosary College, Chicago.
Visitation will be at Holy Angels Convent, 170 George St., Sydney, today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A Bible Vigil will be held in the convent chapel at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will take place at Sacred Heart Church, Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. with Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Gertrude Hillier of 335 Borden St., Whitney Pier, died peacefully at home, Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000.
Born in Bay du Nord, Fortune Bay, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Bernadette and Pius Farrell.
She is survived by her husband, Maurice; brother, Philip Farrell (Dot); special nephew, David Farrell and nanny’s girl, Rebecca Farrell. She will also be dearly missed by many nieces and nephews who’s lives she touched with much love.
Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Pearl Farrell, Eileen Farrell, both of Sydney and Edna Farrell, Boston.
Gertrude was predeceased by three brothers, Adrian, Pius and Lawrence.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, in Holy Redeemer Church with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Edna LaRusic
81, Sydney
Mary Edna LaRusic, 81, of Amelia Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, suddenly at her home.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late James and Beatrice (Boudreau) Joyce.
She was a member of Sacred Heart parish, Sydney. Besides being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, she was active in many organizations including the KOC 1060 Sydney and the CWL where she held various offices in Sacred Heart and St. Margaret’s Parish, St. Margaret’s Village, recently receiving her 40 year pin.
She is survived by husband, Tim; three daughters, Marie (Robert) Allday, Pauline (Richard) Graham and Joyce Evans, all of Sydney; six sons, Sid (Jane), Greg (Carolyn), Ed (Nette), William (Edie), William (Edie), Lorne (Mary), all of Sydney and Doug (Darlene), Hornes Road; one brother, Alfred (Marg), Sydney; also by a number of grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by an infant son, Francis and by a sister, Pauline.
The late Mrs. LaRusic will have visitation today (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Church. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

James Wilbur (Choc) Johnston

James Wilbur (Choc) Johnston, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Truro, N.S. on Oct. 8, 1916, he was a son of the late James MacLeod Johnston and Sadie (Weatherbee).
Mr. Johnston moved from Truro to Sydney in 1950, retiring in 1980 from the transfer business, where he worked his entire career.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn (Timmons); daughter, Shirley (Donnie Lund); sons, Raymond (Joan), Henry (Karen), all of Sydney; eight grandchildren, Danny, Valerie and Janice, Dean, Mark and Amber, Kelly and Sherry-Lynn; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Verna, Lander, B.C., Margaret and June, both of Truro.
Mr. Johnston was predeceased by a son, Kenneth, brother, Arnold and sister, Jean.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday, Oct. 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be held in the chapel, Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery.
Memorials in James’ memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetic Society, Palliative Care or to a charity of one’s choice.
Edna LaRusic
81, Sydney
Mary Edna LaRusic, 81, of Amelia Street, Sydney, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, suddenly at her home.

Gordon Stewart Edwards
60, Sydney
Gordon Stewart Edwards, 60, of the Esplanade, Sydney, passed away suddenly at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000.
Born in Florence, Cape Breton, he was the son of Rhoda Florence (MacAulay) Edwards and the late Daniel Henry Edwards.
Gordon worked at the Sydney Steel Corp. until his retirement, due to ill health. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, the men’s club and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 138.
He is survived by a daughter, Lynda (Sheldon MacKinnon), New Waterford; son, Blake (Allison Kirkpatrick), Calgary; three sisters, Kaye (Peter) Gillis, Wendy Strickland and Ann Lewis and a brother, Bill, all of Sydney. He is also survived by his companion, Isabel Kennedy, Sydney.
Besides his father, he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Peter and Catherine (MacDonald) MacAulay, Florence, his paternal grandparents, Charles and Josephine (MacNeil) Edwards, Sydney Mines and a sister, Maxine in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in the chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Interment in Brookside Cemetery.
