Daniel Rose
76, Sydney
Daniel Rose C.D., 76, of Kings Road passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Little Bras d’Or, he was a son of the late Gilbert and Elizabeth (Butt) Rose.
He worked for Cape Breton Dairyman and Scotsburn Group from 1947 to 1989. He was a veteran of the Second World War having served in France, Germany, and Italy. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 151, Howie Centre.
Daniel is survived by a daughter, Gail (Brian) Costello, Westmount; two sons, Daniel (Brenda), Yarmouth and Robert (Ruth), Truro; 11 grandchildren; and his companion, Margaret Branle. Also surviving is his sister, Dorcas Bagnell, Coxheath; and a brother, Robert, England; many nieces and nephews.
Daniel was predeceased by his wife, the former Jessie Guy, two sons, Terry and Gilbert, two sisters, Gladys and Blanche, three brothers, James, Clarence and Alexander.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the chapel 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating.
Interment in Alfred Smith Memorial Cemetery.
George Frederick Serrick
68, Sydney
George Frederick Serrick, 68, of Victoria Road, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Richard and Ida (Burton) Serrick.
George was a member of United Baptist Church and the Sydney Pensioners Club. He was retired from the City of Sydney Works Department.
Surviving are his sisters, Vivian (John) MacDonald, Mary Kaloc and Kay Rowe, all of Sydney.
He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Ryan and brothers, Robert and Richard.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in the chapel Wednesday at 10 a.m., Rev. Andy Crowell officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
J. Henry Wrathall
84, Sydney
John Henry Wrathall, 84, Grand Lake Road, Sydney, passed away, at the Glace Bay Health Care Centre, on Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Anthony and Jane (Ralphs) Wrathall.
Henry was a member of the Church of The Good Shepherd, Dominion. In 1981, he retired, after 49 years of service, as a mechanic for Devco.
Surviving are his wife and best friend for 61 1/2 years, Laura Jean ‘Tootsie’ (MacLeod); daughters, Jean (Henry) Porquet, Scotchtown, Marilyn (Harvey) Mackie, Gardiner Road and Karen (Bob), at home; sons, James, British Columbia and John (Patsy), Gardiner Mines; sisters, Jessie (Garnet) Cooper, Grand Lake Road and Jean Long, Gardiner Road; brothers, Jack (Margaret), New Glasgow, Steve, Grand Lake Road, and Douglas (Joan), Sydney, 12 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
Henry was predeceased by his sisters, Isabel and Mary and brothers, Sidney, James, Edwin, and Erwin.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at the Church of The Good Shepherd, Friday 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Chard, assisted by Rev. Harold Brown, officiating. Interment in Centreville Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd or the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Gladys Farrell
77, Sydney
Gladys Elizabeth Farrell, 77, a resident of Cleary Avenue, North Sydney, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Burgeo, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Henry and Henrietta MacDonald.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, a member of the North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club, enjoyed playing darts at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 19 mixed dart league on Tuesday afternoons.
Surviving are two sons, Tom (Chris), Paris, Ont. and Ed (Gail), Glovertown, Nfld.; six daughters, Mary (John) Capstick, Sydney Mines, Jean (Donnie) Power, Balls Creek, Lora Robinson (Randy), Brantford, Ont., Yvonne (Jimmy) Reynolds, North Sydney, Lena, North Sydney and Caroline, at home; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen MacDonald, Burgeo, Nfld. and one brother, Sam MacDonald, Galtos, Nfld.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Farrell, daughter, Maggie, brother, John and sister, Sarah MacGillivray.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Church with the Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the CNIB.
Jim Bart Ferguson
63, Sydney
Jim Bart Ferguson, 63, of 297 Terrace St., Sydney passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at his home.
Born in Gabarus to the late Michael Ferguson, he is survived by his mother Erna (MacGillivary) Ferguson.
He was a plaster and drywaller for over 40 years.
He enjoyed music and writing music and poetry. He enjoyed being around people and people enjoyed being around him.
He will be sadly missed by his family and many, many, friends he met throughout his life.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Winston and Wilfred.
He is survived by his loving wife, Leah (Carson) Ferguson.
Along with his two sons, Carson (Karen), Toronto, James (Heather), Sydney; and three daughters, Kelly (John), Korena (Bradley) MacDonald, Bonnie (Daniel), all of Sydney.
He is also survived by sisters, Kay Toomey, Donna and brothers, Joe and Ewen, of Sydney; stepbrother, Wesley, Toronto and stepsister, Corra, Sydney.
Grandchildren include, Michelle, Leanne, Lynn Ann, Tyler, Terry, Carrie Ann and Amanda.
He will be sadly missed by each and every person he met during his life.
Visiting hours will be Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service 10 a.m. Saturday in Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney with Rev. Robert Lyle. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Garden.
Helen Louise Dwyer
74, Sydney
Helen Louise Dwyer, 74, of Cottage Road, Sydney, formerly of Richmond Street, Sydney, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John and Nellie (Fletcher) Coole.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Sydney. She retired from Snow White Laundry in Sydney after 25 years service.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan and son-in-law Philip Shaheen, Sydney; grandsons, Philip, Halifax and Stephen, Sydney. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, daughter, Theresa (Terry), a sister, Florence (Peggy) Burke, two brothers, Ronald and James.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Saturday 7-9 p.m., Sunday at 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.. Funeral service will held at the chapel Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Cremation is to take place with burial in the Resurrection Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Unit or a charity of choice.
