Katherine Margaret MacKinlay
84, Sydney
Katherine Margaret MacKinlay, 84, Spruce Haven Drive, Sydney, passed away at home on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000.
Born in Ingonish, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Emma MacLeod.
Katherine was a member of the First United Church, Sydney, the Church Guild, Club 105, and a chartered member of the UCW Variety Unit and the K-ette. She was a long-time employee of Jacobson’s Ladies Wear, Sydney.
Surviving are her daughters, Judy (Gillis) Stephenson, Mass., Evelyn (Clyde) Garnier, Ottawa, and Mary Lynn (David MacIntosh) MacKinlay, London; sons, Jim (Cathy), Dartmouth and Bruce (Doreen), Sydney; a sister, Nellie MacLellan, Dartmouth; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by good friend, John Smith.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd, a sister, Rachel and brothers, Donald and Kenzie.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at First United Church, Saturday 11 a.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. A reception will be held in the church hall following the memorial service.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Ada Helena MacTavish
93, Sydney
Ada Helena MacTavish, 93, of Royal Avenue, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000.
Born in Port Hawkesbury, she was the daughter of the late William and Emma Langley.
Ada was a member of First United Church, Sydney and the UCW.
Surviving are her daughter, Anne (Bruce) Broderick, Guelph; sons, Carl (Dorothy), Etobicoke, William, at home, Sonny, Sydney River, and Brian (Joy), Pickering; five grandchildren, Terry Lynn LeVatte, Halifax, Kimberly MacTavish, Toronto, Allison MacTavish, Brazil, and Carolyn and Matthew MacTavish, Toronto; two great-grandchildren, Megan and Courtney LeVatte, Halifax.
Ada was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Charles Edwin and a loving daughter-in-law, Carmelita.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Donald F. Parsons
64, Sydney
Donald F. Parsons, 64, of 24 Elmbank Ave., Sydney, formerly of Steel’s Hill, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Corner Brook, Nfld., he was the son of the late Joseph and Cecilia (Columbe) Parsons.
He was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney, and a former member of St. Anthony Parish, Glace Bay. Donnie was a merchant seaman and a member of the Seafarers International Union of Canada for a great number of years. He retired in August of 1998 from the Canada Steamship Lines vessel “HM Griffith” as head tunnelman. At one time, he was also an agent for the Seafarers Union with an office in Sydney Mines, N.S.
Donnie is survived by his wife, Louise (nee Murray), formerly of Glace Bay; stepdaughter, Sandra Abbass, Ottawa; two sisters, Annette (Mrs. Ron Smith) and Genevieve, both of Halifax; two brothers, Joe (Hazel), Verdun, Quebec and Kevin, Glace Bay. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters, Isabel and Bertha and also by his wife’s parents, Peter and Rosie Murray.
The late Mr. Parsons, will have visitation today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Anthony Daniel Church with Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Kathryn Borrow
51, Sydney
Kathryn Borrow, 51, of Sydney, formerly of Toronto, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Anna Kuchinak.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier.
She is survived by one daughter, Marianne Borrow, Halifax; one sister, Mary Rosen, Toronto and one brother, John, Toronto.
She was predeceased by one brother, Michael.
The late Ms. Borrow will have visitation Sunday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Daniel Black
82, Sydney
Daniel Black of Calgary was born on March 4, 1918, and passed away at the Peter Lougheed Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at the age of 82 years.
He is survived by his loving wife Louise Black (nee Ponee); four children, Wayne (Susan) of Toronto, Ont., Mary Lou (Rod), Gerard (Ann), both of Calgary, and Patricia (Earl) of Victoria, B.C. Daniel is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Keith, Kelly, Stephen, Marianne, Paul, Laura-Ann and Stacey.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home with Father Kazimierz Olesky officiating. Graveside service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Alberta (218a 2323 32 Ave. N.E. Calgary, T2E 6Z3).

Captain Philip James MacKenzie
92, Sydney
Captain Philip James MacKenzie, 92, of Upper Prince Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at his home.
Born in Baddeck, he was a son of the late Archie and Mima (Hart) MacKenzie.
He was a life member of the Plumber and Pipefitters Local 682. He was a Master of the Schooner Garfield out of Baddeck in the 1920s. He was Past Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Phythias, Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, the former Hazel Drover; six children, Shirley (Francis) Washbrook, Dorothy (Thomas) Pratt, all of Sydney, David (Mary) MacKenzie, Truro, Wayne MacKenzie, Phyllis (John) Pearce, Darlene (Kenny) Tucker, all of Sydney. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was the last member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Archie and David Hart MacKenzie; one sister, Mary MacKenzie.
Special thanks to our brother Wayne and son-in-law John for all the care they gave to our father; we are very grateful.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating.
