Walter George Nichol
67, Sydney
Walter George Nichol, 67, of Fourth Avenue, Custom Trailer Court, passed away suddenly Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Walter Henry and Sarah (Rutherford) Nichol.
Walter was retired from the Ashby Legion, where he worked as bar manager and was also a life member. He was an avid tarabish player and a member of the Ashby Legion Old Timers Ball Team, of which he enjoyed being a part.
He is survived by his children, George (Flora) Conn, Sydney, Henry, at home, Paula (Mike) Langlois, Sydney; four grandchildren, Crystal and Matthew Conn, Mitchell and Jordon Langlois; his faithful companion, Missy; a brother, Robert; three sisters, Louise (Bill) Brewer, Dawn (Bill) Sweet, Doureen (Barry) Harris, all of Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
Walter was a wonderful father and grandfather and friend to all who knew him. Wally will be sadly missed by all.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Thelma (Tiny) Burt; a brother, Harvey.
Visitation was held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Sunday and will be held today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday 11 a.m. in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. James Attwood officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or charity of choice.

Annie Mary Thomas
89, Sydney
Annie Mary Thomas, 89, of the Cove Guest Home, Sydney, formerly of Grand Mira, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, on her 89th birthday, at the guest home.
Born at Grand Mira, she was the daughter of the late Archie and Mary (MacMullin) MacIntyre.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney, and a former member of St. Margaret’s Parish, Grand Mira.
Annie was a member of the St. Theresa’s Parish CWL and was also a member of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society.
Surviving are five daughters, Catherine (Leo Murray), St. Peter’s, Mary (Joe Briand), Dartmouth, Peggy (Roddie Gillis), Blues Mills, Anne (Harold Ferguson), Caribou Marsh, and Theresa (George Smith), Sydney River; three sons, Archie, Sydney, John (Nancy), Jeddore, and Eugene (Florence), Grand Mira; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Harry in 1960; grandson; Henry Murray; son-in-law; Neil Gillis; daughter-in-law, Helen Thomas.
The late Mrs. Thomas will have visitation today (Monday) 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Margaret’s Church, Grand Mira, Rev. Gerald Campbell officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to St. Margaret’s Cemetery Fund or The Cove Guest Home.

Effie Lourena Walsh
80, Sydney
Effie Lourena Walsh, 80, of Esplanade, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Jeffereys, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late George and Josie (Carter) Shears.
She was a member of St. George’s Anglican Parish.
Effie is survived by her son, Harry (Joan), of Grand Mira North; and five grandchildren, Martin, Lisa, Andrea, Heather and Jennifer; two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her sister, Frances Parsons, Sydney; and her brother, Dudley, Stephenville, Nfld.
Effie was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; four sisters, Daisy, Annie, Jenny, and Martha; four brothers, William, Howard, Bessett, and Lou.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in St. George’s Church, 2 p.m. Monday, with Capt. Sandra MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.

Margaret A. Kennedy
95, Sydney
Margaret A. Kennedy, 85, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at the residence.
Born in Grand Mira South, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Margaret (Gillis) Gillis.
Margaret was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier.
She is survived by sisters, Mary (Louis) MacInnis, Catherine Gillis; brothers, Alex (Theresa) Gillis, John (Kitty), all of Sydney.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband, John, brother, Dan and sister, Florence.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Kennedy will be Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be Monday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

James Hammond Thompson
90, Sydney
James Hammond Thompson, 90, of MacGillivray Guest Home, formerly of Sydney’s north end and Beaver Cove, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at the residence.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Maude (Scott) Thompson.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney, and Holy Rosary Church, Westmount. He was a member of the Riverdale Seniors Club and the Cape Breton Trailer Club. He was also an avid bowler with the Sysco Bowling Team at one time and was employed with Sysco for over 40 years, retiring in 1975.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Sarah MacNeil; one daughter, Katherine (Mrs. Melvin MacDonald), Sydney; one son, James B. (Myra), Sydney. Also surviving are one sister, Mary; two brothers, Roland (Betty) and Bernard (Annette), both of Sydney; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one brother, David, two sisters, Jean Cain and Beatrice House, one daughter-in-law, Lillian Thompson.
Visitation for the late Mr. Thompson will be held Sunday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Holy Rosary Church, Westmount. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the MacGillivray Guest Home.

Maude Fifield
78, Sydney
Maude Fifield, 78, Townsend Street, Sydney, passed away at home on Monday, Dec. 4, 2000.
Born in Bonavista, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Amos and Gertrude (Hampton) Burge.
Maude was a member of Christ Church, Sydney.
Surviving are her daughter, Diane (Peter) Jessome, Greenwood, N.S.; sons, Dennis (Evelyn), Balls Creek and David, at home; a sister, Edith Carter, Ontario; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward in 1985, sons, Lawrence, Keith, and Philip, a sister, Ann, and a brother, James.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church, Thursday 10 a.m. with Rev. Valerie Hunt officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
