Thelma Delores Francis
93, Sydney
Thelma Dolores Francis, 93, of 57 Hankard St., Sydney, N.S., died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at her residence.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born in Antigua, West Indies, she was the daughter of the late Louisa Wilson.
Mrs. Francis was an avid member of St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church. She is known as the ‘mother’ of the church, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Vestry Board and was a former Sunday School teacher. She will always be remembered for teaching crocheting and sewing classes to many young people.
Surviving are five daughters, Isabel (Mrs. Vincent Waterman), Sydney, MayAnn Francis, Donna Marshall, Halifax, Deborah Marshall, Toronto, Yvonne (Mrs. Morris Edwards), New York; two sons, Karl ‘Howard’ Williams, Halifax and George Francis (Iona), New York. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Victoria Waterman, New York, Frances (Mrs. David O’Connell), Brandie and Anthony Marshall, all of Halifax. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Canada, United States, West Indies and England.
She was predeceased by her husband, Archpriest George A. Francis in 1982, two sisters, Hilda and Mae and brother, Harold.
Visitation will be this evening, Tuesday, from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church, Whitney Pier, with Archbishop Vincent Waterman officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the building fund of St. Philip’s Church.

Visitation continues today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel with funeral mass at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church.
Ann Margaret MacAulay
82, Sydney
Anna Margaret Macaulay, 82, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, passed away at the nursing home on Monday, Dec. 4, 2000.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late John and Neillie (MacDonald) Ross.
Margaret was a retired registered nurse.
Surviving are her daughter, Joan Evans, Sydney River; sons, Donald (Jackie), East Bay, and George (Theresa), Sydney; sister, Charlotte Chiasson, Baddeck; brothers, Neil and Hubert, Sydney, and George, Barrie, Ont.; and grandchildren, Robert, Ian, Mark, Scott, Kyle and Heather.
She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Ian, sisters, Catherine Dunlop, a sister in infancy, a brother Fraser and granddaughter, Cheryl.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Baddeck.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of choice.
Isabel Bryson MacGillivray
Sydney
Isabel Bryson MacGillivray, Park Street, Sydney, died at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late William Adam Bryson and Jessie Isabel MacMillan.
For many years, Mrs. MacGillivray was a volunteer with the Canadian Red Cross and the St. John Ambulance. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Sydney.
Surviving are two daughters, June Rushton, Comox, B.C., and Corinne Stewart, Nanaimo, B.C.; and a son, Don, Big Pond; five grandchildren, Susan, Michael, Barb (Chris Gudgeon), Shirley (Terry Ratkovsky) and Elli (Craig Cullen); five great-grandchildren, Charlie, Tavish, Keating, Natalie and Emily and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles (Duffy) MacGillivray and four sisters, Annie, Jean, Dorothy and Rebecca.
There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Mary Ellen Kendall
77, Sydney
Mary Ellen Kendall, 77, of 35 Howe St., Sydney, and formerly of Afton, Antigonish County, N.S., passed away peacefully at her home Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
Born at Afton, she was the daughter of the late John Denny Sylliboy and Elizabeth (Toney) Sylliboy.
She was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by daughter, Margaret MacFarlane, Sydney; son, Albert Webb, Sydney; stepchildren, Ernest Kendall, Langley, B.C., Catherine (Kitty) Huntley, Windsor, N.S., Genine Borah, Flandreau, South Dakota, Frank Webb, Rapid City, South Dakota, Lola Helm and James Webb, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Gloria Barcardi, Carona, Calif. Also survived by 12 nieces and nephews; her aunt, Nancy Morris and her goddaughter, Murdena Marshall, Eskasoni.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Edward Paulette, second husband, Ervin L. Webb, third husband, John S. Kendall. Also predeceased by sons, John E. Paulette and Robert V. Paulette, brother, Gabriel J. Sylliboy and several brothers and sisters in infancy.
The late Mrs. Kendall will have visitation at the Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni, Sunday after 2 p.m. Visitation will resume Monday at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney, with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Oncology Unit, c/o the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney; C.B. Palliative Care Society or a charity of choice.
Malcolm A. Morrison
Sydney
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Malcolm Alexander Morrison of Bay Street, Sydney, N.S., peacefully in his sleep Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at home.
Born in Tarbot Vale, he was the son of the late Murdock J. and Bella (MacKay) Morrison.
He was a member of the United Church of Canada and a faithful member of Trinity United Church. Malcolm was a farmer and carpenter by trade.
He served his country in Britain, Italy, and North Africa as a Sapper with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Second World War. He then returned to his home in Cape Breton. He worked for many years as a carpenter and had an outstanding reputation for his skill and craftsmanship.
He is survived by his loving and devoted daughters, Muriel (Gordon) Reynolds, Sharon (David) Tarr, Barbara and Wilma Morrison; five grandchildren, whom he dearly cherished, Jason and Andrew Reynolds, Amanda and Lindsey Tarr and Danny Morrison.
He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine (Dauphney) Morrison, an infant daughter, Margaret.
He was the last living child of Bella and Murdock, predeceased by two brothers, Daniel and Alexander and six sisters, Josephine, Christine (Mrs. Neil MacLennan), Ann (Mrs. Louville Whitten), Agnes, Effie, and Aggie Bell.
The body is resting at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
Malcolm was a kind, loving father, grandfather, and friend, and graced the lives of all who knew him.
