Margaret 'Peg' C. Mulligan

Margaret ‘Peg’ Mulligan of Cabot House, 500 Kings Road, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at home.
Born at Antigonish, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Angus and Mary (MacDonald) MacDonald.
She was a graduate nurse from St. Joseph Hospital, Glace Bay, and worked in New York most of her life. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband, Benny; two sisters, Jane (Don) McCarthy, (Sydney), and Mary (Malcolm) Boudreau, (Detroit); three brothers, Ronald, Joseph, and Dan C. (Elizabeth), (Sydney).
The late Mrs. Mulligan will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Church, Sydney, Fr. Anthony O’Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Peter Francis 'Frank' Ranson
73, Sydney
Peter Francis ‘Frank’ Ranson, 73, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his daughters on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the home.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late James and Mary Ellen (Langley) Ranson. He was an avid hunter and fisherman for most of his life. He worked in the coal mines for many years, then for the Town of New Waterford in the Water Department. He went on to Nova Scotia Power until his retirement.
Frank is survived by his daughters, Jo-Anne (Timmie) Fitzgerald, and their children, Breanna and Colton, of New Waterford, special granddaughter Tracey McGillivray, Peggy (Gary) Stewart, Sydney, grandson Troy and great-grandson, Steven, Nanaimo, B.C.; two sons, Angus (Glenda) Campbell and their daughters, Allysia, Holly, and Amanda, of New Waterford, Bradley (Fern) and their children, B.J. and Ashley, of Kitchener, Ont.; a sister, Veronica (Regis) McDonald, Loch Lomond; two brothers, Wallace (Louise) Ranson, and Angus (Renee) McDonald, New Waterford.
Frank was predeceased by a wonderful step-father, John L. McDonald, who raised him from infancy; his wife, Theresa MacKinnon; two sons, Francis and Joseph in infancy; three sisters, Clara Pearson, Jean Hillier, and Ida Murphy; four brothers, James ‘Buddy’ and Arthur Ranson, Victor and Albert McDonald; and three siblings in infancy.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held in Mt. Carmel Church 10 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Don MacGillivray officiating. Interment in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Alphonse Spangolatti
73, Sydney
Alphonse Spagnolatti, 73, of 48 MacGuire Dr., Sydney, passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of the late Natale and Veronica Spagnolatti.
He was a member of St. Augustine Parish, Sydney. He retired from Sydney Steel Corp. in 1985. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by three sons, Gordie, Eddie, and Joey, all of Sydney; two sisters, Mary Ardelli and Anna (Mrs. Jim Peterson); two brothers, Louie and Geno, all of Sydney; grandson, Russell Spagnolatti, Ontario.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Margaret Arsenault in 1995; brother, Leo; and sister, Rita.
The late Mr. Spagnolatti will have visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine Church, Grand Lake Road, Sydney, Fr. Atwood officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to the Kidney Association of Nova Scotia.
Ancia (Anne) Starzomski

Anne (Mayich) Starzomski died peacefully Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, Halifax. In the hours before passing on to God, husband and family had the opportunity to exchange their love and devotion with her.
Born in Croatia in 1922, she came to Canada in 1936.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joe; her children, Anne Marie (Dan) Quinn, Calgary, Peter (Bonnie), Riverview, N.B., Frank (Delores), Sydney, Larry (Margaret), Antigonish, Rosalie, Vancouver, Colette (Joseph) Walsh, Cole Harbour, Judi (Peter) McCarron, Port Hawkesbury; sister, Jennie Samford, Cala Mesa, California. She is also survived by grandchildren, Michael, Janet, Neil, David, Cora Lee, Krista Ann, Tanya, Brian, Kevin, Stephen, Adam, Amy, Sarah, Patrick and Jessica; and great-grandchildren, Megan, Riley, Emma, Olivia, and Nikolas.
Besides her parents, Kris and Julia Mayich, she was predeceased by a son, Joey; and brothers, Stanley and John.
Visitation will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Polish Church, Whitney Pier, Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 2:30 p.m. with burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organization of your choice that supports children in recognition of Anne’s love of and devotion to youngsters.
Elizabeth Ctherine "Kaye" Jack
82, Sydney
Elizabeth Catherine “Kaye” Jack, 82, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, passed away at the nursing home on Monday, Dec. 18, 2000.
Born in North Ingonish, she was the daughter of the late Bowden Lewis and Ella May (Warren) Murphy.
Kaye was a member of the First United Church, Sydney.
A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose family was the center of her life, Kaye is survived by her daughter, Brenda Williams, Sydney; son, Wayne, Ontario; sister, Greta Surrette, Sydney and a brother, Cecil, Owen Sound, Ontario. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sherry, Brenda Lee, Crystal, Colin and Mark and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Caitlyn, who all brought her great joy.
Kaye was predeceased by her husband, Murray Wallace; a daughter, Sheila, and brothers, George, Bill and Leslie.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Thursday, 11 a.m. with Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Margaret Harriett 'Mickey' Coombs
65, Sydney
Margaret Harriett ‘Mickey’ Coombs, 65, of the Cove Guest Home, formerly, Beech St., Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, on Tuesday, December 19, 2000.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of Mary (Young) Hinks and the late Michael Hinks.
Besides her mother, Mickey is survived by her daughter, Heather (Mike) Kauffman, Big Pond Center; son, Richard (Margaret), Truro; sisters, Theresa (Ted) Donovan, Detroit, Rhodena (George) MacDonald, Mississauga, Ont., and
Caroline (Albert) Moules, Wasaga Beach, Ont.; brothers, Arthur, Sydney, Howie (Jeanette), Mississauga, John, Toronto, and James (Hilda), Burlington; three grandchildren, Christopher, Richard, and Rachelle.
Mickey was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1998, and a brother, Douglas.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service, will be held at Christ Church on Thursday 10 a.m., with Rev. Glenn Kent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
