Curtis Douglas
70, Sydney
Curtis Douglas, 70, a resident of Cottage Street, North Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at the veterans wing of Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in Bay du Nord, Nfld., he was a son of the late Albert and Jane (Davage) Douglas. Curtis was a Canadian War Veteran serving in Korea in 1953. He spent the greater part of his life on the sea as a marine engineer sailing with Irving, Husky Oil and the Coast Guard for over 40 years. He later worked as a commissionaire at Marine Atlantic in North Sydney for several years until his retirement, and was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, the former Henrietta Williams; six sons, Larry (Lynn), Stephen (Gina), both of North Sydney, David (Brenda), Frank (Sandy), Dennis (Sue), all of Dartmouth, Brian (Lisa), St. Catharines, Ont.; one daughter, Janice (Mike) McKearney, Dartmouth; two sisters, Pearl Farrell, Sydney, and Cecilia Rose, Nfld.; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one son, Curtis; one brother, Thomas and one sister, Georgina.
Abiding by Curtis’ wishes, there will be no visitation, and cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be made to the N.S. Heart and Stroke Foundation or the veterans wing of Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Arrangements entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.

Ronald Francis MacKinnon
50, Sydney
Roland Francis MacKinnon, 50, of 68 MacArthur’s Lane, Sydney, passed away Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Frenchvale, he was the son of the late John M. and Christena (Campbell) MacKinnon.
Roland was a member of the Local 682 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. He was also self-employed for a number of years, while working throughout Canada, United States, and Russia during this time. Roland enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and was an avid hockey fan who took pride in helping coach his boys throughout minor hockey.
Roland is survived by his loving wife Carol (Stevens) MacKinnon and three caring sons, John (Lisa), Canadian Armed Forces, Edmonton, Clayton (Paulette), Canadian Armed Forces, Halifax, and Brent (Carolyn), Sydney; three beautiful grandchildren, Tara, Cole and Evan.
Roland is survived by his brothers, Joseph (Catherine), Winnipeg, Vince (Rose), Sydney, John Wayne (Arlene), Sydney and by his sisters, Peggy (Mel) Goldenthal, Winnipeg, Erdine LaPointe, Sudbury, Sandra Evans (Rod), New Brunswick, and Esther (Clary) MacDonald, Sydney, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Roland was predeceased by four brothers, Hector Daniel, Alexander, James, and Albert Carver, as well as three sisters, Florence Christena, Annabelle, and Lucille.
Visitation will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, Thursday, Dec. 21, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Roland will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Albert MacCormack
58, Sydney
Albert John MacCormack, 58, Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, after a brief illness but courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in North Sydney and was the son of the late John J. ‘Dee’ and Mae (Carter) MacCormack.
Albert was employed by C.N. for 27 years in various departments, the most recent being Route Canada. He toiled diligently as local union representative with C.B.R.T. and G.W., trying to get a fair settlement for fellow members. Albert was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Parish in Sydney where he was the dedicated caretaker for the past six years.
During his youth, he was a member of the Cabot Squadron Air Cadets in North Sydney and he competed in track and field, baseball and gentleman’s hockey on various teams. He was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed watching his children excel at sports. He had a keen interest in harness racing.
He is survived by his loving wife, Frances ‘Frankie’ (Hanratty) MacCormack; two daughters, Kathy Spurr (Bill) in Bedford, Trish MacCormack in Vancouver; and two sons, Tom MacCormack (Melodie Veinot) in Winchester, Ont. and Rob MacCormack in Calgary. He is survived by three grandchildren, B.J., Jordan and Robert. He is also survived by sisters, Catherine ‘Kay’ Rutledge (Bob), Penticton, B.C. and Alice Marsh, Mill Creek, N.S. and a brother Dan MacCormack (Colleen), Stoney Creek, Ont.; his Uncle George Carter, North Sydney; and by 40 nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brother Angus, an infant brother and sisters, Mary Leon, Edith Ann MacDonald and Ann Keeping.
Visitation will be from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. on Thursday in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel in Sydney. Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s Church in Sydney, Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or to the St. Joseph’s Parish Building Fund.

Elizabeth "Bessie" Gardiner
67, Sydney
Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Gardiner, 67, of Sydney River, passed away early Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Table Head, Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (McDonald) Gardiner.
Bessie was a member of the St. Leo’s Parish, Glace Bay.
She is survived by brothers, Mark (Camille), Glace Bay, Don (Alice), Halifax, also a number of nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place and a memorial mass will be celebrated at a later date. The remains are entrusted to the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Memorials or donations in Bessie’s memory may be made to the Braemore Home Corp. or charity of choice.

Paul James Muise
71, Sydney
Mr. Paul James Muise, 71, of 45 James St., Sydney, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Peter and Bessie (LeBlanc) Muise.
Born in Sydney, he resided in Whitney Pier all his life, and worked at the International Coal Piers, Holy Redeemer Parish Centre, Sydney Steel Coke Ovens, retiring in 1989 from Sysco. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish and was also an avid skater.
He is survived by his wife, the former Rita MacDougall; two sons, Michael (Lynn), Calgary, and Derrick (Diane), Marion Bridge; three daughters, Paulette (Lloyd) MacDonald, Sydney, Carolyn (Edward) Nichols, California, and Ann Louise (David) Saunders, Ontario; his brother, Albert, New Waterford; his sister, Dolores, Massachusetts, U.S.A.; and eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Laura, Marc, Adam, Brandon, Kyle, Allison and James.
He was predeceased by his brother Wilfred and sisters, Alice and Rosella.
Visitation for the late Mr. Muise will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Society.

Earle Joseph Ratchford
78, Sydney
Earle Joseph Ratchford, 78, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of 22 Margaret St., Sydney, passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 16, 1922, he was the son of the late George and Mae (Johnstone) Ratchford of Sydney.
A devoted family man, Earle was retired from the Heavy Mills Department at Sydney Steel after 43 years of service. He was a member of the Co-operative Society and St. Theresa’s Parish, Sydney.
Surviving are daughters, Joan (Allan) Cullen, Saskatchewan, and Barbara (John) Wells, Sydney; five sons, David (Lisette), Toronto, Dennis (Valerie), Sydney, Michael, Grand Cache, Alta., John (Lee Ann), Sydney and Ian, Sydney; two sisters, June MacIntyre, Halifax, and Dorothy, Sydney; brother Gerald, Sydney; eight grandchildren, George, Melanie, Johnathan, Ryan, Cassandra, Mellissa, Adam and Ellenna.
He was predeceased by his wife Vera (MacKinnon) Ratchford.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. There will be a funeral mass 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, in St. Theresa’s Church, Sydney, with Rev. A. MacDougall officiating. Interment will be at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
