Shirley Hannigan
63, Sydney / Baddeck
Shirley Hannigan, 63, of 491 Cottage Rd., Sydney and Harvey Drive, Baddeck, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late George and Lexina Goodman (MacKay).
She was a charter member of the Sydney Mines Kinette Club. A past member of the Memory Lane Singers. She spent many years with her husband, working in the North in such places as Chasabbi, Quebec, Great Whale River, Quebec, Moosonee, Ont., Cumberland House, Sask., Iqualit, N.W.T. and Baker Lake, N.W.T.
She dearly loved her eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Francis Hannigan and sisters, Margaret, Elizabeth and Eleanor, brothers, Cecil and Arthur.
She is survived by four children, Todd, Barrie, Ont., Ruth (Paul) Zinck, Ont., Nancy (Tyrone) Mulrooney, Nfld., Terri (Del) Brewer, Baddeck, with whom she partially resided; sisters, Jean Peters, California, Charlotte Miller, Vancouver; twin, Sheila MacPherson, Sydney; brother, Wilbert Goodman, Whitney Pier.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 6-9 p.m. in MacAskill’s Funeral Home, Baddeck. Funeral Thursday, 2 p.m. in St. Michael’s Church, Baddeck, with Fr. Doug MacKinnon officiating. Private burial at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Kidney Foundation.

Shirley Hannigan, 63, of Sydney and Baddeck, who died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, was also survived by a brother, Arthur (Buddy) Goodman, Toronto.
Dora E. (Chiasson) Chuppa
89, Sydney
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Dora E. Chuppa, peacefully at the MacGillivary Guest Home Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the age of 89 years.
Born in Grand Etang, she was the daughter of the late David and Cecile Doucet.
Dora was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney, and is survived by daughters, Leona MacGillivary and Cecile (Brian) Beaton, both of Sydney; brothers, Alex Dan, Moncton, Wilbert, Lima, Peru, Charles, New Hampshire; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Twice married, she was predeceased by husbands, Victor Chaisson and John Chuppa, three sons, Daniel, Bernie, Victor Chaisson, and her brother, Jimmy Doucet.
Visitation for Dora will be in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, today (Thursday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony Daniel Church, with Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the MacGillivary Guest Home.

E. Morris MacLeod
78, Sydney
Edward Morris MacLeod, 77, of Avalon Drive, Sydney River, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late John E. and Sarah Margaret (Ferguson) MacLeod.
Morris retired, after 32 years of service, as a salesman for Standard Brands in Cape Breton and Eastern Nova Scotia and was a member of their Quarter Century Club. He was an elder of Bethel Presbyterian Church and a member of the Riverview Y’s Men and the Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his son, Scott, at home; a sister, Marion Bond, Scarborough, Ont.; and brothers, Allister (Charlotte) and Earl (Geraldine), both of Sydney.
Morris was predeceased by his wife, Gloria Margaret (Micheau) and a brother, Ralph.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Saturday, 11 a. m., Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Ernest Frederick Latham
86, Sydney
Ernest Frederick Latham, 86, of 464 Alexandra St., Sydney, passed away on Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mary (Kelly) Latham.
He was an adherent of Sacred Heart Church, Sydney. Cpl. Latham served overseas with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders during the Second World War. He retired from the Blooming Mill at Sydney Steel Plant.
Surviving are daughter, June (Charles) MacDonald and son, David (Lorraine), both of Sydney; four brothers, George, James, Merle and Terrance, all of Sydney; granddaughters, Jennifer and Tiffany Durnford; grandsons, Allan, Stephen, and Johnathan; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Grace and sister, Muriel.
The late Mr. Latham will have visitation Tuesday, Jan. 2, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, Rev. A. O’Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice in Mr. Latham’s memory.
Sister Mary (Sister St. James) MacLellan
Sydney
Sister Mary MacLellan, CND (Sister St. Mary James), died peacefully at the CND Health Care Center, Sydney, on Dec. 30, 2000.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Margaret (MacIsaac) MacLellan.
Sister made her religious profession in the Congregation of Notre Dame on Aug. 19, 1937. Her teaching career included various places in Nova Scotia, Montreal and Ontario.
Sister’s later years were spent in Sydney Mines where she was actively involved with the Mad Potters. Due to ill health Sister Mary entered the CND Health Care Center, Sydney, in October 1999.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, Sister Mary was predeceased by her parents; her sister Ann (Sister St. Daniel Marie); and her brothers, John, Joseph, Allan, Malcolm and Daniel.
She was survived by three nephews, Donald, Clark, and Barry MacLellan, all of British Columbia.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 2, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. A Bible vigil will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
