James MacKay
92, Glace Bay
James Corliss MacKay, 92, of 835 Main St., Glace Bay, passed away in Halifax on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001.
He was born in Chignecto, N.S. in 1908.
Corliss will be remembered as a strong family man and friend. He lived life to the fullest and with the belief that a good belly laugh a day helped us all enjoy life. The door of his home in Glace Bay and bungalow in Mira were always open to friends and family. Even if you didn’t know them when you arrived you were sure to leave with many warm and fond memories of the hospitality provided by he and his wife Midda.
Starting as a blacksmith’s helper, Corliss moved on to various other jobs in the Dominion Coal Mine Company (now Devco) retiring as Superintendent of Scales in 1968. He also taught mining engineering in night school in New Waterford. In his early years he was very active in sports and was the last surviving member of the Niviac Basketball Team of Calvin Church in New Waterford. He was an avid cribbage player, fisherman and champion horseshoe pitcher and bowler.
He is survived by his children, Isabel Harris, Glace Bay, Heather Irwin (Gene), Dartmouth, Lewis (Jane), Dartmouth, Bunny Taylor (Charles), Halifax; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sisters, Leona MacKay, New Waterford, and Doris Shorten, Moncton.
He was predeceased by his wife, Catherine Ford ‘Midda’ (Lewis), his father, William Corliss, his mother, Margaret Elizabeth (Skidmore), brothers, Kenneth, Calvin, and Russell, sisters, Marjorie Parach and Beryl Wilton.
His remains have been cremated. There will be a gathering for family and friends at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Saturday, Jan. 6, from 2-3 p.m., to be followed by a memorial service with Rev. David MacLean officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.
No flowers by request. Donations in his memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or a charity of your choice.
Thomas Patrick "Tom" Perry
69, Sydney
Thomas Patrick ‘Tom’ Perry, 69, of Williams Street, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001.
Born in Benoits Cove, Nfld., Tom was a son of the late John and Mary (Youden) Perry.
Surviving are his wife, Helen (McGuigan); daughters, Mary (Kenneth) Poirrier, Darlene Perry and Sandra (Larry) Hrynick, Sydney; sons, Blaine (Rhonda) and Brent (Amanda), both of Sydney, and Glenn (Christine) and Leo, Toronto; sisters, Eileen Jesso, Mercedes (Clarence) Sheppard and Ruby Parks, Corner Brook, Nfld.; brothers, Dom (Marilyn), New Waterford, Johnny (Cornilia), Petit de Grat, and Leo (Zita), Dartmouth and 12 grandchildren.
Tom was predeceased by sisters, Josephine Jesso and Gertie Janes.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church, Monday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Cremation to follow.
M. Jean Taylor
Sydney
Jean Taylor passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
She was born in Sydney on Jan. 2, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Margaret (Campbell) Morrison.
Jean worked at Eaton’s Company and the general office of Sydney Steel.
She was an original member of the United Protestant Church of Sydney River. She was also superintendent of the Junior Sunday School for a number of years and the first president of the ladies guild now known as the UCW. She was a former member of the Cove Auxiliary, Sydney Curling Club, the Beinn Bhreagh Chapter lODE and the Sydney Y’s Menettes.
Jean’s interests were many, her favourite being her bridge club of over 40 years. When she wasn’t sharing her love with her family and grandchildren, she was busy visiting the elderly.
She is survived by Edison, her husband of 53 years; three children, Deborah (Pierre) Noel, and sons Robert, of Bedford, and Kenneth (Colleen), of Dartmouth; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and by sister Kaye Blakeney.
She was predeceased by brothers, Angus and Donald Morrison.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Monday) from 3-9 p.m. Funeral will be held at United Protestant Church Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. with Rev. J. Allan McIntosh officiating. Reception to follow.

Ruth Skinner
97, Sydney
Ruth Skinner, 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
Born in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Lauchlin and Maude (Densmore) MacGregor.
She was married for 62 years to William Skinner who predeceased her in 1995. They resided at 107 Harold St. and MacGillivray Apartments, Xavier Drive, Sydney. Ruth moved to the Cove Guest Home in February, 1996.
Ruth graduated as a registered nurse in 1928. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Church and past president of Unit No. 4 UCW.
Ruth is survived by one sister, Emma B. MacGregor, California, and several nieces and nephews.
She was also predeceased by a sister, Gladys (MacGregor) Trask and brother, James MacGregor.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial moment will be held at the Cove Guest Home, 320 Alexandra St., Thursday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m. A committal service will be held at a later date at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew’s Church Memorial Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
Clara Elizabeth Carson
88, Sydney
Clara Elizabeth Carson, 88, a resident of the Cove Guest Home and formerly of Sydney River, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001.
Born in Sydney on Sept. 5, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Harry James and Mary (Andrews) Davis.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Ralph, Lloyd, Earl and Alfred, sisters, Vivian MacMillan and Muriel Van Eden and husband, William (Jack) Carson.
Clara is survived by four daughters, Norma (Murray) Hooper, Sydney River, Sylvia (Bill) Tyrell, Pickering, Ont., Marilyn (Herb) Lovett and Elaine (Graham) Pollett, both of London, Ont., and a son, Ronald, Halifax. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Clara was a former member of Christ Church, Sydney and in later years a member of the United Protestant Church, Sydney River. She was an active member of UCW Guild, a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society, the Bairncroft Orphanage and the Riverside Home and School Association.
Clara was an avid gardener, who enjoyed participating in the flower shows at the Cape Breton Farmers Exhibition. In Clara’s house the teapot was always on and friends and family were always welcome.
Visitation will be at Sydney Memorial Chapel Thursday, Jan. 11, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held Friday, 2 p.m. at the United Protestant Church, Sydney River with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cove Guest Home or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
Howard Ross Lewis
84, Sydney
Howard Ross Lewis, 84, of 91 Desbarres St., Sydney, died peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001.
Born in Reserve Mines in 1916, he was the son of the late Edwin and Mary (Musgrave) Lewis.
Howard worked for 28 years for Canadian National Railway in Sydney and North Sydney. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces overseas during the Second World War. An avid outdoorsman, Howard loved to hunt and fish.
He was predeceased by a son, George in 1998, and by son, Howard Ross in infancy.
The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by brothers, Cecil, Gordon, Lindsay, Arthur and Frank and by his sister, Evelyn.
Howard is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Fraser; grandson, Howard, Halifax; granddaughter, Natasha and grandson, Brian, both of Riverview, N.B.; and sister-in-law, Mary Lewis, New Waterford.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced in tomorrow’s Cape Breton Post.
Donations may be made to St. George’s Anglican Church, Sydney, or a charity of one’s choice.
