Muriel Agnes MacKeigan
85, Sydney
Muriel Agnes MacKeigan, Muggah Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines on May 3, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Cora and James Wolstenholme.
Surviving are her daughters, Gertrude, Cora, Agnes, and Joan; stepdaughter, Ruth; sons, James and Carl; stepsons, Hubert, Alfred, and Charlie; and numerous grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Jesse, Mildred, Hilda and Freda and brothers, James, Harry and Earl.
Muriel was predeceased by her husbands, John Jackson, Johnny MacKeigan and Edward Landry. She was also predeceased by her sons, John, Earl, and David, stepsons, Norman, Gerald, Eion and Donald, stepdaughters, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Margaret, sisters, Helen and Dorothy and brother, Harold.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Monday, Jan. 22, 12 -2 p.m., followed by a memorial service in the chapel, Capt. Morris Vincent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
There will be an open house for anyone wishing to express condolences held at the home of Carl MacKeigan, 5 Terrace St., Sydney (across from Sydney Academy) on Saturday, Jan. 20, 12-9 p.m.
Charles Peter Richardson
87, Sydney
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Charles P. Richardson, Bay Street, on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001.
Charles was born on March 28, 1913, in Conception Bay, Nfld.
Surviving are his loving wife of 35 years, Patricia Ann Richardson (Murphy); three daughters, Hatti (Phil) O’Rourke, Sydney, Sheila, Ontario, and Cathy (Chris) Fitzgerald, Sydney Mines; one son, Charles (Lisa) Richardson, Howie Centre; and many loving grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Lois (John) Dunn, Sydney, and Maxinne (Ranni) MacDonald, Bras d’Or.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Harriet Richardson, brothers, Clayton, David and Ivan Richardson and sisters, Mary Nearing and Lena Priddle.
Charles was a member of Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128. He proudly dedicated 42 years of his life as captain of the Sydney Fire Department. He will be sadly missed.
There will be no visitation, by request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in Trinity United Church Saturday, 10 a.m. with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
Charles Peter Richardson
87, Sydney
Charles Peter Richardson, 87, who passed away Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, was also survived by a son, Brian (Kathleen), Lake Ainslie, and a brother, David, Ontario.
He was predeceased by stepmother, Pearl MacLeod, first wife, Evangeline Weatherbee, daughter, Margaret Hopkins and two sons, Charles Jr. and Donald Wayne.
Howard Douglas Burt
74, Sydney
Howard Douglas Burt, 74, Sydney, N.S., passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at home surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Harry and Laura (Leriche) Burt.
Howie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rita; son, Howard (Donna), Sydney; two granddaughters, Amanda and Melissa; one sister, Florence (John) Anstey; one brother, Bill (Judy), Ontario; a special loving niece, Judy (Donald) MacLean and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Poppy loved spending time with his grandchildren and they will miss him very much.
He was predeceased by brothers, Edgar and Harry.
During the Second World War, Howie served with the RCAF. He was a life member and past president of the Whitney Pier Legion, Branch 128, and was honoured as a 50-year member, decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal. He also received the Governor General of Canada award for his community services.
Howie was a member and elder of Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. He worked at Sydney Steel, Pyro Minerals, Kaiser Strontium and MacIntyre Chev Olds. In 1991, Howie retired as a driver examiner for the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
A lover of all sports, he played baseball in the 40s and 50s, in the old colliery league. Howie enjoyed his years with the Sydney and Whitney Pier Baseball Club and the Sydney Millionaires Oldtimers. He was an ardent fisherman and enjoyed his days on the lake with all his fishing buddies.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Trinity United Church Monday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Donald MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Clinic or the VON.
Sam Dubinski
85, Sydney
Sam Dubinski, a well known businessman and musician, passed away in his sleep Friday evening, Jan., 19, 2001, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness.
He was 85 years of age.
Surviving are children, Jerry, Sydney, Enid Lieff, Toronto, Arlene, Victoria, B.C.
Funeral services, under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel, will be held Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at the chapel, weather permitting.
Kathleen Sadie (Kay) Morrison
81, Sydney
Kathleen Sadie (Kay) Morrison, 81, of 35 Argyle St., Sydney, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, following a lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Born in Halifax, N.S., Nov. 22, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Louis F. and Mary Hiley.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney.
She is survived by her husband, Joe; six children, Mary Lou MacDonald, Sydney, Maynard (Bette) Morrison, Sydney, Anne (George) Socka, Toronto, Kathy (Jim) Griffin, Calgary, Joe (Bernadette) Morrison, Chicago, and John Morrison, at home; eight grandsons and six granddaughters.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Louis John Hiley, who was killed in Italy in May 1944; sisters, Nora Jamael and Frances MacGillivray; and granddaughter, Jillian Morrison in 1989.
The late Mrs. Morrison will have visitation at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Anthony Daniel Church, Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the MacGillivary Guest Home, Sydney, or a charity of one’s choice.
Mary Christine Wagner
92, Sydney
Mary Christine Wagner, 92, of Sydney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Louisbourg, she was the daughter of the late Wesley and Catherine (MacDonald) Tanner.
She was the loving mother of the Rev. Wilfred (Sandra), Pictou Co., Kay O’Neill (Bill), Sydney, Joyce Arnold (Canon Fev), Glace Bay, Pearl MacDougall, Dartmouth, and Lawrence, Louisbourg. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred; brother, Archibald; and sisters, Pearl and May.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Louisbourg, Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 11 a.m., with Fr. Paul Finley officiating.
Burial to follow in parish cemetery. Reception to follow in the parish hall.
