Daniel Robert (Hollywood Bob) MacLean
76, Sydney
Daniel Robert (Hollywood Bob) MacLean, 76, of Townsend St., Sydney, passed away Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John Dan and Florence (MacInnis) MacLean. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church. A veteran of the Second World War and a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 138, Ashby. Bob was employed with Standard Brands as a supervisor prior to retiring from CNR on Via Rail.
He is survived by his wife, Lena (Scott) MacLean; a daughter, Debbie (Bill) Sherwood, Sydney; three grandchildren, Erin (Kevin), Alberta, Adam and Kyle, Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was the last member of his immediate family.
He was predeceased by three brothers, John, Charles, and Louis.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A private graveside service will be held at Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
At family request memorials may be made to Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.
Neil 'Buddy' MacDonald Ross
83, Sydney
Neil ‘Buddy’ MacDonald Ross, 83, a resident of Cusack Drive, Sydney, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late John and Nellie (MacDonald) Ross.
Neil ‘Bud’ retired from CNR after 40 years. He served with the Army Signal Corp as a teletype operator during the Second World War. Neil ‘Bud’ was an avid gardener and fisherman and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl A. (Hillman) Ross; son, Gary (Lois) Ross, North Sydney; daughter, Kathy (Kirk Rafuse) Ross, Halifax; four grandchildren, Neil Ross, Hamilton, Ont., Nicole Ross, Calgary, Alta., and Brandon Rafuse and Shannon Rafuse, both of Halifax, N.S. He is also survived by brothers, Hubert (Betty) Ross, Sydney, and George (Alice) Ross, Barrie, Ont.; sister, Charlotte Ross, Baddeck, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Fraser Ross, Baddeck, sisters, Katherine Dunlop, Sydney, Margaret MacAulay, Sydney, and Eleanor May.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation will take place, under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel and a private family service will be held.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.
Linda (George) Campbell
75, Sydney
Linda (George) Campbell, 75, of Taylor Street, Sydney passed away Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Heart’s Content, Trinity Bay, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Noah and Clara (Branton) George.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, the Whitney Pier Senior Citizens Pensioners Club, and was employed for a number of years at the Isle Royale Motel.
Linda is survived by her beloved husband, John Joseph (Joe) Campbell; a daughter, Betty Hollywell, Toronto; stepdaughter, Mary Bourgeois, at home; two stepsons, John (Evelyn) Campbell, Sydney, and Roy (Pauline) Campbell, Sydney; sister, Mary E. MacDonald, Sydney; seven grandchildren, Linda, Donna, Margaret Ann, Christopher, Darrel, Greg, Tracey; four great-grandchildren, Nikki, Avery, Dameon and Daniel. Also survived by several nieces and nephews and special niece, Allison MacDonald.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Mildred, Sarah, Leah Richardson and Jean MacIsaac, brother, Gideon.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Diabetes Society or Lupus Society of Nova Scotia.
John D. Campbell
73, Sydney
John D. Campbell, 73, of 51 St. Laurence St., Sydney passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Duncan and Cassie Campbell.
He was a member of Holy Redeemer Parish, Whitney Pier. He was an employee of the Sydney Steel Plant.
Surviving are his beloved wife, the former Tilly Keough; daughter, Dianne ‘Bev’ Rolls, South Bar; two sons, Eric (Janice), and Danny (Deanne), both of Sydney; sister, Rita O’Leary, Ontario; brothers, Willie and Bunny, both of Sydney. Also surviving are many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by son, Bobby; brother Bernie; sisters, Mary, Anita, and a sister in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Redeemer Church, Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.
Donations in John’s memory to Hospice/Palliative Care Society or Osteoporosis Society.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney.
Edna Peters
85, Sydney
Edna Peters, 85, of the MacGillivray Guest Home, formerly of Richardson Avenue, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at the guest home.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Burke) Myers, of Sydney.
She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney, and the Parish CWL. She was also a member of Club 55, Sydney Pensioners Club, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch #12, Royal Canadian Legion, Sydney.
Surviving are her daughter, Barbara (Joe) Bryden, Sydney; four sons, Pierce (Helen), Edmonton, Frank (Marie), Ottawa, Robert (Sherry), Sudbury, Ont., and David, Sydney; two sisters, Luella MacKinnon, Sydney, and Ena MacKinnon, Hamilton, Ont.; a brother, Aubrey Myers, Sydney; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband, Henry; sisters, Mable Burdge, Kelly Lillico; and brother, Joe Myers.
The late Mrs. Peters will have visitation Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney, Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.

Ann Hawrylak
86, Sydney
Ann Hawrylak, 86, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of Whitney Pier, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Science Centre, Halifax, after a brief illness.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Mary (Paruch) and Demetrius Mahalik.
She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew, son, William ‘Billy’, brother, Michael and sisters, Catherine and Sophie Mahalik.
Beloved mother of son, John (Sandra), Dartmouth; daughters, Catherine (Kasu) Claxton (John Pountney), Mississauga, Ont., Steffie (David) Young, Halifax. Sadly missed by four grandchildren, Audra (Ross) Fredericks, Andrew Hawrylak, Andrea and William Young; great-grandchildren, Alexander and Abigail Fredericks; sisters-in-law, Florence Mahalik; nephew, Dennis (Pam) Mahalik, nieces, Michelle (Peter) Jurzak, Denise (Ronald) O’Keefe and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ann was a devoted to her family and friends. She enhanced all of their lives with her wonderful spirit and leaves behind a legacy of remarkable humour, generosity and kindness.
She shared her love of her Ukrainian heritage and her talents for handicrafts and cooking were much appreciated by her family and many friends.
She was a life-long and active member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church and a founding member of the Ukrainian Ladies Club.
Visitation will be at Sydney Memorial Chapel Saturday, Feb. 10 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Panakhyda (funeral prayers) Sunday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. in Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church, Sydney, with Fr. Petro Rudnik officiating.
