Carol 'Wheatsie' Clarke
84, Sydney
Hannah Carol ‘Wheatsie’ Clarke, 84, of Stuart Street, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001.
Born in Edwardsville, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Margaret S. (MacDonald) Lewis.
Wheatsie was a retired bank teller working in Vancouver, Boston, and Sarnia, Ont. She was a member of the Westmount United Church and also the Seaview Golf Course and WlNS, of Edwardsville.
Surviving are her son, Richard (Kathy), California; a sister, Edna (Douglas) MacVicar, Edwardsville; grandchildren, Cherie Lee (Tony) Durazo and Christopher, California; and two great-grandchildren, Alicia Marie and Mark.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman, in 1986, and brothers, Berton, Lester and Frank.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Monday 2 p.m. with Rev. Allan McIntosh and assisted by Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Catherine (Myers) Roach
87, Sydney
Catherine (Myers) Roach, 87, of Sydney, formerly of Glace Bay, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Hannorah MacLean of Glace Bay.
She is survived by two daughters, Nora Anton, Sydney, and Derenda (John) Carnegie, Alberta; three sons, Edward (Norma) Myers, Ontario, Charles (Kay) Myers and Danny (Sandra) Myers, both of Sydney; one sister, Tina Tomlinson (Meikele), Ontario; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by both husbands, Nelson Myers and Joseph Roach and a sister, Annie Rutherford.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Roach. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Wednesday, Feb. 14 with Rev. Everett McDow officiating.
Pauline Roche
Sydney / Blackett’s Lake
It is with great sorrow that the family of Pauline Lynch Roche of Royal Avenue and Blackett’s Lake announce her passing. Pauline died as she lived life, with grace and dignity, surrounded by those who loved her.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Frances (McGrath) and David Lynch.
Pauline is survived by her daughter, Linda Gray, Sydney, and her son, James David (Lyn) Roche, Ben Eoin.
She was predeceased by her husband, James, her beloved grandson, Glen Gray, her brother, John (Jack) Lynch, stepmother, Theresa and her cherished sister, Marguerite (Peggy).
Pauline lived life for her family and enjoyed her time spent in Ben Eoin at her summer home appreciating the wildlife, her flower gardens and the beautiful starlit summer nights. Her wish would be that all who knew and loved her, live life for the moment and enjoy the beauty around us.
At Pauline’s request there will be no visitation.
Donations in memory of Pauline may be made to the Sickroom Equipment Loan Service of Palliative Care.
Funeral mass celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
A reception will follow the service at St. Theresa’s Parish Hall.
Lucy Jane (Cormier) Ostrynski
85, Sydney
Lucy Jane Ostrynski, 85, died peacefully at Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, on Friday, Feb. 16, 2001.
Born in Friar’s Head, Inverness County, she lived most of her life in Sydney.
Lucy Jane was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael, her parents, John and Anne, sisters, Catherine, Mary, Annie, brothers, Dennis, Joseph, Arthur and Moise.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Lucy was a great lover of life and her French culture. Her kind and generous spirit will be missed by her friends.
Visitation will be at the Cheticamp Funeral Home, Sunday, Feb. 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will take place Monday, Feb. 19 in St. Peter’s Church, Cheticamp at 10 a.m.
Catherine Bates
85, Sydney
Catherine E. Bates, 85, passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
She resided briefly at the Breton Bay Nursing Home and prior to that was a resident of 202 Dillon St., Sydney.
Born in Little Lorraine, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Sarah (Gallant) Burke.
In her early years, she was an active member of St. Joseph’s CWL and the AOH (Ancient Order of Hibernians).
She is survived by one daughter, Elaine (Ron) MacDonald, Grand Lake Road; three sons, Clem (Geneva), Louisdale, Adrian (Donna), Sydney and Leonard (Marlene), Sydney; three sisters, Alice (Leo) Mullins, Bateston, Bridgette McCann, Donkin, Margaret McGrath, Sydney; one brother, John, Little Lorraine; 11 grandchildren, Cheryl, Tammy, Brendan, Neil, Glen, Jana, Tracey, Lindsay, Jennifer, Paula and Scott; seven great-grandchildren, Dylan, Taylor, Brennan, Keigan, Ceilidh, Ryan and Breagh.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur in 1997.
The late Mrs. Bates will have visitation Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, second level. Funeral mass will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Sydney with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Ethel Sarah Richstone (nee Pearson)
93, Sydney
Ethel Sarah Richstone (nee Pearson), 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at her residence at The Cove Guest Home, Sydney, N.S.
She is survived by her daughters, Elissa Cahn (Paul), St. Louis, Mo., and Barbara Nathanson (Herman), Sydney, N.S.; grandchildren, Alan and Sheldon Nathanson, Naomi Cahn and Debra Castelbaum; and by her great-grandchildren, Hanna, Julie, Emily, Lauren, Louisa and Abigail.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Jules Louis Richstone, grandson, Brian Nathanson and by her five brothers and sisters, Bessie, Tessa, Samuel, Matthew and Harry.
Services to be held at Palm Beach Memorial Park, Palm Beach, Fla., where she will rest in peace with her husband, Louis.
