Nina (nee Ranson) Hunt
92, Sydney
Nina Hunt, 92, a resident of the Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of LeVatte Lane, Louisbourg, passed away peacefully at the Breton Bay Nursing Home, where she resided for the past few months, on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001.
Born in Louisbourg, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Flora (MacKay) Ranson.
Nina enjoyed a long life in Louisbourg with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Gloria; sister-in-law, Dilly; many nieces and nephews and their families.
She is survived by her daughter, Gloria, Louisbourg.
Nina was predeceased by her husband, Alfred in 1971, two children in infancy, sisters, Mabel, Louise, Katie, Flora and Levinia and brothers, Robert and Joseph.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.

Hector 'Ted' Macmillan
87, Sydney
Hector Clarence ‘Ted’ Macmillan, 87, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, and a lifelong resident of Sydney, passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Hector Clarence and Winnifred (Butler) Macmillan.
He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney. Ted was employed at the Sydney Steel Corp., where he worked in the Open Hearth Department for over 40 years retiring in 1978. He was also a volunteer fireman for over 40 years.
He is survived by one daughter, Judith (Alex) Boone, Lower Sackville, N.S.; two sons, John (Louise) Macmillan, Alymer, Que., and Raymond (Marion) Macmillan, Gloucester, Ont.; one sister, Shirley (Frank) Moran, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; one brother, Donald, Sydney; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his wife, the former Mary O’Brien, a brother, Allison and sisters, Winnifred MacDonald and Dorothy MacIntyre.
Visitation was held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level, Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass was held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Diabetic Association Cape Breton Branch or to a charity of choice.

Miriam E. 'Minnie' MacDonald (nee Colbourne)
57, Sydney
Miriam E. MacDonald, 57, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at home surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Whitney Pier, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Vivian Colbourne.
She was a member of Christ Church, Trinity Avenue, where she served on the church council, taught Sunday school, and served as a greeter, as well as other duties. In her early years, she attended St. Albans of Whitney Pier.
Surviving are her loving husband, James P. ‘Buddy’ MacDonald and one son, Jim (Denise), Eastern Passage. She is also survived by sisters, Doris Heading, Westmount, and Freda (John) Marusiak, Whitney Pier; brothers, Harold (Lorraine), George (Sharon) and Gordon (Sylvia), all of Sydney, and Jerry, Whitney Pier, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by an older brother, Fred.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. To celebrate Minnie’s life, a memorial service will take place at Christ Church on Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Glen Kent officiating.

Murdoch Angus MacIver
72, Sydney
Murdoch Angus MacIver, 72, of Argyle Street, Sydney, passed away at home on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001.
Born in North River, he was the son of the late Duncan and Mary Margaret MacLean.
Murdoch was retired from the Department of Lands and Forest.
Surviving are his daughters, Barbara (Eldon) MacDonald, Enfield, and Debbie MacIver (Bob), Sydney; stepdaughter, Rosanne (Gus) Vineott, Sydney; son, Bill (Clara) Forest, Westmount; brother, John D., Buffalo, N.Y.; grandchildren, Wally, Rosemarie, Kim and Billy and great-grandchildren, Jackson and Daniel.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alma, son, James Murdoch and brother, Arthur.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will take place at Westmount United Church, Friday, 2 p.m. with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating. Interment in South Haven Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

Walter Kenneth Coombs
76, Sydney
Surrounded by his family, Walter Kenneth Coombs, age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 2, 2001.
Walter resided at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay, for the past year and a half.
A lifetime resident of the Sydney area, Walter was the son of the late Herbert and Annie (Kelland) Coombs. He was a member of St. Alban’s Anglican Church, Whitney Pier.
Prior to his retirement in 1984, Walter was employed at Sydney Steel for 42 years as a boilermaker.
A veteran of the Second World War, Walter proudly served overseas in the Canadian Army with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders from 1943 to 1946.
He met and married Catherine Currie of Glasgow, Scotland and upon discharge they returned to Sydney, raised a family and were married for 47 years until her death in 1993.
Walter was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Whitney Pier Branch 128.
He is survived by three daughters and one son, Julia (Walter) Covey, Sydney River, Kenny (Susan), Victoria Mines, Bonnie (Bernie) Power, Keltic Drive and Maureen, Sydney.
He is also survived by one brother, Clifford, South Bar and four sisters, Mrs. Edna Burke, Sydney, Mrs. Ada Keller, Sydney, Mrs. Doris Camus, Montreal and Mrs. Louise Porter, Sydney.
Affectionately know as Papa, Walter also had seven grandchildren, Scott and Michelle Covey, Kenneth, Allison and Cindy Coombs, Crystal Power, Lindsey Coombs and one great-grandson Dean Black.
Besides his wife and parents, Walter was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret in infancy, a granddaughter in infancy, two brothers, Herbert and John and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Aucoin, Mrs. Lillian Germon and Phyllis.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction Sydney Memorial Chapel. There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 5, 2001 at 11 a.m. from St. Alban’s Church, Whitney Pier.
Burial will take place at a later date at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Memorials may be made to Taigh Na Mara bus fund or a charity of one’s choice.
