Funeral service for the late Walter Kenneth Coombs, scheduled for Monday, March 5, 2001 at 11 a.m., has been changed to 3 p.m., at St. Alban’s Church, Whitney Pier.
Burial will take place at a later date at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Ronald Duncan Gillis
85, Sydney
Ronald Duncan Gillis, 85, of the MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, died peacefully on Friday, March 2, 2001 at the Home.
Born in Ingonish, he was the son of the late Angus and Anna Belle (Donovan) Gillis.
He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Sydney.
He was employed with the Sydney Steel Corp. in the open hearth department, retiring in a senior management position, after 42 years of service.
Surviving are two daughters; Donna Spalding (Howard), Hampton, N.B. and Karen of Sydney; two sons, Dennis (Frances) and Ron (Sheila), both of Sydney; and one sister, Marie MacNeil, Ingonish. He is also lovingly remembered by his 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine (MacLellan) Gillis, six sisters and two brothers.
Visitation for the late Mr. Gillis will be held from 7-9 p.m. tonight and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MacGillivray Guest Home.
Harold Stevens
Sydney
Harold Stevens passed away Friday, March 2, 2001, at the Scotia Nursing Home in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
He was the son of the late Benjamin and Naomi (Picture) Stevens.
He is survived by his daughters Catherine MacNeil of Sydney, Donna (Al) Hanson, Alberta, Terry Stevens, Vancouver, a son, George (Susan) Manitoba, three sisters Marion (John) Shepard, Sydney, Olive (George) Hulford, Sydney River, Marie (Donald) Morrison, Sydney River, and a sister-in-law, Rose Stevens of Ontario, a brother John (Olga) Stevens, Sydney, and eight grandchildren, Danny, Michael, Sydney; Matt, Alicia, Alberta, Chris, Melanie, Manitoba; Jeremy, Sarah, Ontario and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter Carol Jo Anne, two sons, Garry and Harold George, four sisters, Lillian Frost, Eva MacPhail and Muriel Evelyn in infancy, two brothers Donald and George.
There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place.
There will be a memorial service at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke foundation.
Arrangements under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Katherine MacIntyre
94, Sydney
Katherine MacIntyre, 94, a resident of The Cove Guest Home, formerly of Mira Ferry, passed away at the residence Monday, March 5, 2001.
Born in Salmon River, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Donald and Mary (Morrison) MacKinnon.
She was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church, Mira and an honourary member of the Atlantic Missionary Society.
Surviving are her stepsons, Donald J. (Freda), Dartmouth, and Neil A. ‘Buddy’, Brickyard Road; grandchildren, Lisa, Laurel and David and great-grandchildren, Christina and Jennifer. She is also survived by her closely devoted phone friends who helped fulfill her life.
She was predeceased by her husband, Angus.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Wednesday, 2 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone.
Memorial donations may be made to the Loch End Cemetery or The Cove Guest Home.
Herbert Charles MacDonald
86, Sydney
Herbert Charles MacDonald, 86, of Grand Lake Road, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Malcolm and Jane MacDonald.
Herbert worked at Sydney Steel for 42 years. He had become a well-known folk artist, since his retirement.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Bella (Felik); two sons, Herb and David and a daughter, Myrna, Halifax. He is also survived by three grandsons, four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in the chapel, Friday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Bernard Sidney Ross
87, Sydney
Bernard Ross, 87, of 71 Lorne St., Sydney, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Edward and Julia (Chartier) Ross.
Bernie retired in 1978, after nearly 50 years as a loyal and faithful employee of Sydney Steel. He began in the general office and concluded his career as supervisor of the agency department.
He was a member of Christ Church parish, particularly the congregation of St. Stephen’s Church. He worked with the children’s choir and Sunday school and served as parish warden, church treasurer, lay reader, boy scout master and as a member of the parish council. During his diamond wedding anniversary celebration, Bernie was made an honourary warden in recognition of many years of faithful and dedicated service to St. Stephen’s Church since its founding in 1954.
He especially enjoyed sports fishing and times with his beloved grandchildren.
Mr. Ross is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Matilda (Latham) Ross; three sons, David (Dee), Lower Sackville, Doug (Karen), Dartmouth, and Jim, Sydney; three cherished grandchildren, Keith, Jason and Jennifer and one great-grandson, Zachary. Also his sister, Ethel Ferguson, The Cove.
He was predeceased by his brother, Edward and grandson, Bruce.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton Street, today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 9 at Christ Church, Trinity Avenue with the Rev. V. Glen Kent officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Memorial Fund or to a charity of choice.
Reception to follow interment at St. Stephen’s Church on Upper Prince Street.
