Barry Evong
39, Sydney
Barry Patrick John Evong, 39, of Sydney, formerly of Halifax, passed away Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of Martin Evong of L’Ardoise, C.B. and Irene Evong of Halifax.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney, and formerly of Stella Maris Parish, Louisbourg. Barry was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish. He was employed as a letter carrier with Canada Post for the past 13 years in Halifax, New Waterford and Sydney.
Surviving are his wife, the former Sherry Jollota; two daughters, Danielle and Yolanda, both at home; two sons, Joshua and Mathieu, both at home; one brother, Michael (Colleen), Halifax.
Besides his father, Martin, L’Ardoise and his mother, Irene, Halifax, Barry is survived by his stepmother, Karen, L’Ardoise; and by his father-in-law, Fred Jollota, Halifax and his wife, Evelyn.
He was predeceased by his brother, Marty.
The late Mr. Evong will have visitation at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level, Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 12 in St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Hilda Marie (Tat) Bray
Sydney
Hilda Marie (Tat) Bray, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Milton Street, Sydney, passed away Sunday March 11, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Annie (MacDonald) Bray.
During the war, she worked at HMCS dockyard in Sydney and for a number of years she operated her own hairdressing business. Later, she worked at Crowell’s Ltd. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church and the ladies auxiliary of Breton Bay Nursing Home.
She is survived by nieces, Heather Jones, Ottawa, Judy Bedford, Halifax; sister-in-law, Lillian Bray, Sydney; and several cousins.
She was predeceased by brothers, Carl and Wallie; sister, Shirley; and niece, Dawn Brewster.
There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday at 3 p.m. with Reverend Stephen Mills officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to charity of choice.
Josephine June Doane
53, Sydney
Josephine June Doane, 53, of Whitney Avenue, Sydney, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2001, at home.
She was born in Sydney, a daughter of Walter and Sophie (Kokoshki) Pierrynowski.
She was a member of St. Theresa’s Parish.
Josephine is survived by one daughter, Shelley, Halifax; one son, Devin, also of Halifax; a granddaughter, Ashley Marie Dye; one sister, Diane (Vince) Buckland, Sydney; and a brother, Robert Pierrynowski, Sydney.
There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
A memorial mass will be held in St. Theresa’s Church, Tuesday at 12:10 p.m. with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Palliative Care.
Frederick Francis Hanna Jr. (version 1)

Fredrick Francis Hanna Jr., 60, of 353 Rotary Dr., Sydney, passed away peacefully, Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Fred Hanna and stepmother, Carol Hanna.
Survived by his loving wife, Elaine (Aucoin); four sons, Fred, North Sydney, David, Ontario, Steve (Kim), Sydney and Derrick (Brenda), Sydney; daughter, Sheri (Volker), Dartmouth; sisters, Yvonne (Michael), California, Brenda, Ontario; brother, Lawrence, North Sydney. Also survived by a stepdaughter, Leanne (Kirt), Sydney; stepson, Neil, at home; and 16 grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by a special cousin, Elaine Hanna.
He was predeceased by his mother, Jean (Lahey) Hanna and a brother, Eric.
Over the years Fred worked for Sydney Steel, Barrington and Vokey, S. Karrell Heating and was a longtime employee and member of the Cedars Club. He was very active in ball and hockey. Fred’s passion and desire for a card game will always be missed by everyone at the card room.
In honouring Fred’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of T.W. Curry Funeral Home, Sydney. A memorial service will be held at a later date in St. Joseph’s Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Fred Hanna, 60, Sydney passed away peacefully Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Fred Hanna and the late Jean (Lahey) Hanna.
Fred is survived by his four sons, Fred, North Sydney, David, Ontario, Steve (Kim), Sydney, Derek (Brenda), Sydney; and only daughter Sherri (Volker), Dartmouth; 14 grandchildren; sisters Yvonne, California, Brenda, Ontario; brother Lawrence, North Sydney; aunts and uncles; several nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
Besides his mother, Fred was predeceased by his brother, Eric, Truro.
Over the years, Fred worked for Sydney Steel, Barrington and Vokey, S. Karrell Heating and was a long-time employee and member of the Cedars Club.
Fred’s passion and desire for a card game will always be his trademark and he will be missed by everyone at the card room.
