77, Glace Bay
Florence Gouthro, 82, formerly a native of Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre in Stephenville Crossing, Nfld.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Christine Stewart.
She was a former member of St. Anthony’s Church, St. Ann’s Sodality and CWL.
She is survived by Hugh, her husband for 58 years; son, Hugh (Ann), Spruce Grove, Alta.; four daughters, Ann (Terry) Penney, Port-au-Port, Nfld.; Winnie (Donald) Morrison, Glace Bay, N.S.; Mary (David) Achorn, Lawrencetown, N.S.; Kathy (Ron) Wheeler, Cambridge, Ont.; three sisters, Margie (George) MacLeod, Sydney, N.S.; Anna (Malcom) Rubin, Bridgewater, N.S.; Dolores Fraser, Summerside, P.E.I.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
She was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Joseph, Wilfred and Gordon, son, Sheldon and grandson, David Hugh.
Funeral service was March 20 in the chapel of Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville with Fr. Joseph Kelly officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.

Oliver Gertrude Hynes
77, Glace Bay
Olive Gertrude Hynes, 77, a resident of Seaview Manor and a former resident of 9 Wadman St., Glace Bay, passed away Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Garda (Glencross) Bond.
Olive was very loving and loyal to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Christina Nash, Glace Bay, Elizabeth (Bob) Fitzsimons, Ontario, Joanne (Buster) Jenkins, Glace Bay, Leesa (Ralph) Smith, Birch Grove, Wendy (Danny) MacPherson, Glace Bay; son, Jackie (Caroline), Dominion; brothers, Harold and Clarence Bond, both of Ontario; brother-in-law, Andrew Clark and daughter-in-law, Judy Hynes; 14 grandchildren; Mitzi, Richard, Carla, Jody (Annette), Natosha, Ryan, Glen, John Wayne, Stacey, Fabe, Kelly (Brent), Troy (Carrie), Jeffery and Corrie; nine great-grandchildren, Presley, Jordan, Trevor, Branden, Jodi, Laura, Rebecca, Caelynn and Johnathan.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Vincent ‘Jack’, sons, Wayne and Bill, brothers, Raymond, Byron, Frank and Ormie, sister, Erma Clark, grandson, Leland Hynes and son-in-law, Fabian Nash.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Hynes will be held today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, Major Dinzel Baggs will be officiating. Interment will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery at a later date.
Donations in Mrs. Hynes memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Kidney Foundation are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
John Anthony Batten
88, Glace Bay
John Anthony Batten, 88, of 41 Hillside Ave., Glace Bay, passed away Monday, March 26, 2001, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Level II.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Isaac and Catherine (Healy) Batten.
He worked with Devco at No. 20 Colliery until his retirement in 1970. He was an active member and secretary/treasurer of St. Anne’s Men’s Club, a member of St. Anne’s Church and a charter member of the Glace Bay Knights of Columbus.
He will be sadly missed by son, Donald and daughter, Eldean; four grandchildren, Sean, Troy, Stacey and Tara; three great-grandchildren; five brothers, James, Allie, Naish, all of Glace Bay, Tom, Ottawa, and Philip, Grand Cache; six sisters, Gert, Jenny, Sr. Cecilia Catherine, all of Glace Bay, Emmeline (Mrs. Tony Burns), Halifax, Kathleen (Mrs. Nick Yorke), Ontario, and Anne Marie (Mrs. James McDonald), Grand Cache.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Catherine ‘Toots’ MacKay, brothers, Joseph and Isaac.
Visitation for the late Mr. Batten will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will be at St. Anne’s Cemetery at a later date.
Members of the KOC are asked to assemble at the funeral home Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for prayers.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Marjorie Nash
88, Glace Bay
Marjorie Nash, 88, of Breton Bay Nursing and formerly of 86 Nolan’s Lane, Glace Bay, passed away at the nursing home Thursday, March 29, 2001.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Ann (Borden) Nash.
She was a member of the Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle Glace Bay.
Marjorie is survived be sister, Lizzie Young, Ontario, and two nieces, Nina Rogers and Shirley Rogers.
Predeceased by a twin sister, Anne Rogers.
Visitation for Marjorie will be held Friday, March 30, 2001, from 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m. in the Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle with Rev. Terrence Carew officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Mary Margaret Rhodes
92, Glace Bay
Mary Margaret Rhodes, 92, of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, and a former resident of RR No. 1, Donkin Highway, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the manor.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John Allan and Bridget (Boozan) McInnis.
Mary was a member of Saint Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay, and a former member of Saint Anne’s Sodality. She was an avid card player. “Scat” was her favourite game played at “club night” of which she was a member. Mae was noted for having a “green thumb.”
She is survived by two sons, John Arthur (Lil), Gordon, both of Glace Bay; one sister, Cecilia (Mrs. Tony MacDonald). Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Brenda, Chucker, Arlene, Gordie, Gregor, Janine, John, Billy, Cathy, Fabe, Cleo, Cindy and Wes and 20 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Art, one son, Edward, brothers, Michael, Thomas, Gordon, John Allan, William P. and Elmer and sisters, Irene (Mrs. Graham MacDonald) and Clara and one grandchild, Edward David.
Visitation will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay, Saturday, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in Saint Anthony’s Church, Monday at 11 a.m. with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the CNIB, the Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or a charity of choice.
Harold (The Gull) Dearing
79, Glace Bay
Harold (The Gull) Dearing, 79, of 26 Grove St., and a long-time resident of Seaview Street, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Birch Grove, he was the son of the late James and Julia (Slade) Dearing.
Harold was a retired coal miner working in the mines for 35 years in No. 24, Caledonia, No. 20 and No. 26 collieries. He was a member of Epworth United Church, Glace Bay.
Harold is survived by one daughter, Sharon, with whom he resided; six sons, Harold (Duke) Mary Jane, Truro, James, Daniel, Glace Bay, Crawford (Hattie), Mississauga, Ont., Robert (Anna), Glace Bay, Blair (Debbie), Lower Sackville; one sister, Susan (Mrs. Roy MacKinnon), Glace Bay; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Harold was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Steele) in 1976, one brother, Raphael and one sister, Mae Cole.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials in Harold’s name may be made to a charity of choice.
