Gloria Elizabeth (Billard) Ferguson
72, Glace Bay
Gloria Elizabeth (Billard) Ferguson, 72, of 29 Catherine St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Effie (Fenton) Billard.
Gloria was employed with the Cape Breton County School Board for many years teaching in Marion Bridge and in River Ryan. She was also a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay.
Gloria is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Michael) McCabe, Edmonton, Alta.; sons, Bruce (Heather), Keith (Rose Mary), both of Halifax; sister, Marie; brothers, Arthur and Lewis and seven grandchildren.
Gloria was predeceased by her husband, Robert Ferguson and her daughter, (Carolyn) Margaret Ferguson.
Visitation for the late Gloria Ferguson will be held Thursday, April 5, 2001 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 7, 2001, at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Brookside Street, Glace Bay, with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney-Glace Bay Highway.
Donations in Gloria’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s Building Fund or to a charity of choice.
Daniel F. 'Buster' McNeil
47, Glace Bay
Daniel F. ‘Buster’ McNeil, age 47, of Glace Bay, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 3, 2001.
He was a son of Audrey (MacKenzie) and Francis McNeil.
He was employed with Doug’s Hair Centre for the past 16 years. Buster enjoyed being with his co-workers and meeting with his clients. He was very interested in sports and was active in bowling and swimming.
He will be sadly missed by his family and his nieces and nephews as well as his many special friends.
Surviving are his wife, Muriel; daughter, Tammy (Alex), Reserve Mines; son, Shawn (Crystle), Sydney; five sisters, Sharon (Bob) Stewart, Alberta, Patricia (Rick) Healey, Alberta, Marie (Greg) Nagam, Manitoba, Joanne (Jonathan) Wilson, Ontario, Kimberly (Jack) Kelly, Ontario; three brothers, James (Ann) Tarso, Glace Bay, Thomas (Dale) McNeil, Ontario, Peter MacKenzie, N.B.; four grandchildren, Kayla, Dan Alex, Madison, Michael.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Alexander and Frances MacKenzie.
Visitation will be Friday 2-4 and 7-9 in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Warden United Church Glace Bay with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating.
Interment in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Margaret Mary MacNeil
85, Glace Bay
Margaret Mary MacNeil, age 85, of 18 Water St., Glace Bay and formerly of 5 Grove St., Glace Bay passed away peacefully Thursday, April 5, 2001, surrounded by her loving family, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Catherine (Brown) MacNeil.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Margaret was an avid reader.
She will be sadly missed by her loving sons, Laurie (Margie), Ted (Yvonne), both of Dartmouth, Terry (Ann Marie) Boisdale, Bob and Dave, both of Glace Bay; brothers, Ronald, Francis and Gussie, Glace Bay; sisters, Mary, Manitoba, Rita, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Ronnie, Heather, Nicole, Terry Jr., Colum and Emily; great-grandchildren, David, Jonathan, Nicholas and Jordan.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William, brothers, Roddie, Terrance, Joe and Michael, sisters, Lilly and Theresa.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
There will be no visitation for Mrs. MacNeil. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Fr. Doug Murphy will be officiating. Interment will be at a later date in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Margaret’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
John D. Munroe
77, Glace Bay
John D. Munroe, 77, (captain RCAF), retired and a longtime resident of 210 South St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Thursday, April 5, 2001.
Born in Baddeck, he was the son of the late George and Annie Munroe.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church. John also worked for the post office in Glace Bay and was a member of the Canadian Legion, RCAF Association and Masonic Order.
John is survived by his wife, Gladys (Smith) Munroe; son, Vaughn (Valarie) and grandchildren, Mark and Joy Munroe, all of Ottawa; sister, Janie Matheson, Little Narrows.
There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held Monday, April 9 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay, with Canon Fev. Arnold officiating.
Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association of Nova Scotia or to St. Mary’s Church, would be appreciated by the family.
Roy Ludlow
56, Glace Bay
Roy Joseph Ludlow, 56, of 29 Connaught Ave. and formerly of Third Street, Hub, Glace Bay, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of William and Catherine (MacKenzie) Ludlow.
He was a member of St. John The Baptist Parish, worked for Devco in No. 26 colliery and retired from the Phalen Colliery in 1996. He was also a faithful and valued member of the Hub AA Club.
Surviving are his sister, Lila (Ludlow) Casey; four nieces, Cathy, Gwen, Arlene, Marilyn; two nephews, Lorne and Billie.
He was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, William (Chip), Hec and Bobby.
Visitation for the late Roy Ludlow will be Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay.
Funeral services will be at St. John’s Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Paul McGillivray officiating. Interment in St. John’s Cemetery at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Wilma Ogilive
63, Glace Bay
Wilma Ogilvie, 63, of 17 Churchill St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Helen (Nellie Baxter) Roberts.
Wilma was a lifelong member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay. She graduated from Morrison High School, Glace Bay in 1955 and proceeded to Teacher’s College in Truro. She was a teacher with the Cape Breton Victoria District School Board for 38 years retiring in 1996. Wilma served with various volunteer groups in the area.
She is survived by her husband, Henry M.S. Ogilvie; one brother, Jim (Eleanor) Roberts, Owen Sound, Ont.; and one sister, Linda (John) Shepard, Glace Bay.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Norman Thomas Roberts, in infancy, and Const. John Roberts (RCMP).
There will be no visitation for the late Wilma Ogilvie as cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Knox United Church with Rev. David MacLean officiating. A reception will follow the funeral service in the church basement. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Wilma may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Knox United Church, The Alzheimer’s Association or the Diabetes Association.
