John Peter ‘Pete’ Riga
87, Glace Bay
John Peter ‘Pete’ Riga, age 87, of 110 Maple Ave., Glace Bay, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.
Born in Popoli, Italy, he was a son of Thomas and Stella (Pucci) Riga.
He came to Canada from Italy as a young boy. For the greater part of his working life, he was a salesman with Canada Packers, retiring after 33 years. Pete was an avid sportsman having been active in football, basketball, softball and in later years bowling and golf. He was a past Rotarian and will be remembered and missed sportsfishing in the Margaree.
He is survived by his wife of more than 62 years, the former Marjorie Fricker. He is also survived by brothers, Archie (Liz) and Hector (Kaye), both of Glace Bay and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Clara.
Cremation has taken place.
The late Peter Riga will have visitation in Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay, Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Peter Leblanc officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to St. Anthony’s Parish.
Hugh S. MacDougall
79, Glace Bay
Hughie MacDougall, a loving husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully Sunday, April 29, 2001, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
He was a resident of 8 TomKenn Drive, and was a member of Holy Cross Parish, Glace Bay. He was a longtime resident of Donkin Highway and attended St. Anthony’s Church.
Hughie was born in Glace Bay on Nov. 26, 1921 and was a son of the late Hector and Mary (MacKinnon) MacDougall. He served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in active duty in Canada, Great Britain, Italy and Northwest Europe. He served as Corporal from 1941-46. He was an active member of the Cape Breton Highlanders Association, a past-member and president of Branch No. 40 Legion, Passchendaele, and then a member of Branch No. 3 Legion, Glace Bay. Hughie received his meritorious award along with a lifetime membership award. A kind and generous man, Hughie was a great inspiration to all who knew him. He was always ready to help those in need, especially veterans and their families who were always close to his heart. He will be greatly missed by all the lives he touched.
He worked for the C.B. Development Corp. for many years as a miner in both Caledonia Colliery and No. 26 Colliery, retiring in 1979.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, the former Faustina McMullin; sons, Hughie (Anne), Donkin and David (Michelle), Donkin Highway; two daughters, Patsy (John A.) MacNeil, Sydney, and Lugene (Brian) Petite, Glace Bay. He will be sadly missed by his eight grandchildren, Chris, Lindsay, Jennifer, Mallory, twins David and Logan, Cory and David (Cathy); two great-granddaughters, Brianna, and Jenna; his sister, Theresa Woods, St. Hubert, Que. and a number of nieces and nephews.
Hughie will also be missed by his best buddy of many years, Curly MacNeil, and his family.
He was predeceased by his sister, Mary (MacDonald); brothers, Bernie, Hector, Eddie, Danny, Vince and Joseph (Dody).
Visitation will be in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in St. Anthony’s Church, Thursday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Clifford Bisson officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery at a later date.
In Hughie’s memory, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Marie Constance Jenkins
66, Glace Bay
Marie Constance Jenkins, 66, 48 South St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Aug. 17. 2003, at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Freeman and Hazel (Davis) Jenkins. Marie was a loving wife and mother, and devoted grandmother. Despite her illness, she remained active and enjoyed family gatherings. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Marie was a member of Warden United Church and in her earlier years, was head of housekeeping at the Glace Bay General Hospital. She is survived by long time companion, Duncan (Bunny) Osborne, Glace Bay; daughter, Wendy (Dodi) Campbell, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Kelly (Blair), Ontario, Kristy and Kent, Glace Bay; brothers, Doug (Ann), Kentville, Gerald (Vonnie), Alberta, Freemie (Joan) and Eddie (Ida) Donovan, both of Glace Bay; sisters, Barbara Jenkins, Elaine (Chess) Caines, Donna (Billy) Burte, all of Glace Bay and Brenda (Tommy) Campbell, Birch Grove; many nieces and nephews; Duncan’s three sons Billy (Jeanette), Gary (Shirley), Calvin (Lisa), all of Glace Bay, and their children and Audrey. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by niece, Michelle Burte, nephew Roy Jenkins and two brothers in infancy. By Marie’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. Memorial donations may be made to Palliative Care. Arrangements entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay.
Margaret Malloy
73, Glace Bay
Margaret Malloy, 73, of 62 Mechanic St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Main-a-Dieu, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Theresa (Trimm) Wadden. Margaret was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay.
Mrs. Malloy will be sadly missed by her husband, Alphonse; daughter, Mary Malloy, at home; brothers, Michael, Main-a-Dieu, Allister, Lloyd, Stanley and Charles, all of Glace Bay; sisters, Mary and Yvonne, both of Main-a-Dieu; four grandchildren, Stephen, Daniel, Blair and Jordan.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Peter, Cletus, Sylvester and James, sisters, Beatrice and Theresa.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Malloy will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Muriel Joyce MacKay, RN
67, Glace Bay
Muriel Joyce MacKay, RN, 67, of 58 Park St., Glace Bay, passed away Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in North East Margaree, Muriel was the daughter of the late Duncan and Mary (MacIntosh) Ross. She was a graduate of the Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing (RN). She was on the nursing staff of the Point Edward Rehabilitation Hospital. She belonged to the UCW Knox United Church, Glace Bay.
Muriel is survived by her husband Robert and daughters, Donna (Andrew) Moss, Stellarton, N.S., Kathy, Amherst, N.S., Sharon (Robert) O’Donnell, New Glasgow, N.S. and son Ross (Lynne MacFadgen), Nanaimo, B.C.; sisters, Ann (Basil) Sampson, Glace Bay, Lillian (Lester) Ingraham, Margaree Valley, Marguerite (Emil) Hrebenach of Kensington, Maryland, Frances Woodfin of Washington, D.C.; brother, James (Joan), Richmond Hill, Ont.
She is also survived by grandchildren, Duncan and Ainslie Moss, Sarah and Neal MacKay, Suzanne Maginley and Molly O’Donnell, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by a brother, Winslow and a brother Duncan, in infancy.
Remains are resting in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today (Wednesday), Sept. 13, 2000. Mrs. MacKay will be removed at noon time (Thursday) to Knox United Church, Glace Bay where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. David MacLean officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Palliative Care or to a charity of ones choice.
Daniel “Bozak” McDonald
76, Glace Bay
Daniel “Bozak” McDonald, 76, of 83 Second St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Angus Joseph and Mary Belle (Nicholson) McDonald.
Daniel was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. He was the last surviving member of his family. For 43 years he worked in the coal mines, retiring in 1984 from No. 26 Colliery. Daniel enjoyed several aspects of his life, which included camping, dancing, working in his yard as well as making retreats at the former Franciscan Retreat Center in Gardiner Mines.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda (Mrs. David Pyke), Greenwood, N.S.; two sons, Hector (Brenda) and Daniel (Dorothy), Glace Bay; six grandchildren, Robbie, Kim, Darrel, Crystal, Colin, and Heather; four great-grandchildren, Kyle, Kristopher, Kaitlin, and Tristan.
Daniel was predeceased by his wife, the former Cecilia Kelloway on June 7, 1989. He was also predeceased by four sisters, Rita, Elizabeth, Mary, and Anna; two brothers, Hector and James “Chick”.
Visitation took place on Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay (849-4505). Funeral service will take place today (Monday) 2 p.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

J. Dorita Churney, RN
Glace Bay
Dorita Churney, RN, 87, of 148 Alexander St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by family and friends.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Dan W. (Kink) and Jennie (Thomas) MacDonald.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Dorita was a registered nurse graduating In 1935 from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends.
She will be sadly missed by daughter, Jeanne Marie (Mike) Francis, New Minas; son, Joseph (Francine), Glace Bay; loving grandchildren, Kathy Trask (Jeff), Upper Dyke, Kings County, N.S., Paula Francis, New Minas, Christopher (Marilyn) Churney, Calgary, Karolyn Gillis (Sean), Edmonton, Brian Churney, Petawawa; and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Nicole Gillis; brother-in-law, Bernie Worth, Guysborough; sister-in-law, Annie Churney, Glace Bay. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Churney was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Fred and son, Dannie, brothers, Naish, Vinnie, Gordon, Thomas, Fr. Dannie E., sisters, Eva, Marion (Sis), Barbara, Magdalen and Matilda (Tee).
Visitation for the late Mrs. Churney will be held Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Clifford Bisson officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Knights of Columbus are asked to assemble in the funeral home Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. for a prayer service.
