Agnes Green MacDonald
Glace Bay
Agnes Green MacDonald, 83, formerly of 204 King Edward St., Glace Bay, passed away Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Level II, where she had been a resident the past year.
Agnes was the daughter of the late Edward J. and Mary (Thomey) Rogers.
Agnes was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, and St. Anne’s Society. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a cousin, Mrs. Mary Roselle, Montreal; a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Philip, brothers, Harry and Eddy and sister, Theresa (Mrs. Bobby Meyers).
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacDonald will be held Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday 9 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Cremation to follow.
Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Patricia Rose Murphy
34, Glace Bay
Patricia Rose Murphy, 34, of 20 Wood St., Glace Bay, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she is the daughter of the former Mary MacDonald and the late Joseph Murphy.
Patricia was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, and spent most of her life in Glace Bay.
She will be sadly missed by her mother “her best friend,” Mary; brothers, Joe (Hilda), P.E.I., Tom, Jack (June) and Gordon (Sandra), of Ontario; several aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for the late Ms. Murphy will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Clifford Bisson officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Elizabeth (Becky) Donovan
77, Glace Bay
Elizabeth Donovan, 77, of 141 Highland St., Glace Bay passed away peacefully Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Glace Bay General Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Josephine (Tobin) Kennedy.
She was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish. She was an active member of the liturgy committee and St. Anne’s Sodality.
She is survived by her three sisters, Margaret Devison, Glace Bay, Marjorie Slaney, Toronto, and Patricia Wood, Alberta; two brothers, James Kennedy, Glace Bay, Leo (Jake) Kennedy, Toronto; and many nieces, nephews and her loyal dog, Ziggy.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Donovan, three sisters, Josephine, Minnie and Julia and four brothers, John, Edward, William and Clayton.
Visitation will be held today, Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillvray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral will take place Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church, Fr. Peter Leblanc officiating with burial in St. Anne’s cemetery.
Donations can be made to the regional hospital cancer treatment centre or a charity of your choice.

Jessica C. Quann
94, Glace Bay
Jessica C. Quann, 94, of 3 McDonald Lane, Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in London, England, on July 11, 1906, Jessica was a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Billings) Tredwell.
She is survived by son, Charles (Margaret), Glace Bay, and daughter, Camilla (Ray) Forget, Montreal, Que.; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of the Tredwell family and was predeceased by her husband, Michael Quann.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, Saturday at 2 p.m.

George Whiting
77, Glace Bay
George Whiting, age 77, of 48 Hay St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Daniel and Catherine (Burte) Whiting.
He was a member of Epworth United Church, Glace Bay, and a former employee with the Cape Breton Development Corp., working for many years in No. 20 Colliery and retiring from No. 26 in 1973.
He will be sadly missed by daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Ray Sampson), Reserve Mines, Laura (Mrs. Neil Cote), Glace Bay; foster sons, Victor, Roddie and Richard, all of Ontario; brothers, Richard, Langley, B.C.; grandchildren, Earl, Edmonton, Bradley and Brent, Glace Bay.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Augusta Barrett, brothers, Archibald, Charles, Hoyles, Tom and James, sister, Rose, Helen and Jessie.
Visitation for the late Mr. Whiting will be held Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be Saturday, 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, Maple Avenue, Glace Bay.
Donations in George’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation are suggested as an expression of sympathy.

John William Nearing
73, Glace Bay, N.S. / Alberta
John William Nearing, 73, of 141 Douglas Ave., passed away on Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Matilda (Milley) Nearing.
Johnnie was a miner employed by Devco for 37 years until his retirement in 1987. Johnnie was an avid skater and hockey fan who attended every game at Centre 200.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Lyons); sons, John and Kevin, both of Glace Bay; brothers, George (Betty), Joseph Jr. (Kay), James (Marie), Wayne (Josephine), all of Glace Bay, Kevin (Marilyn), Milford Station and Frankie, British Columbia; sisters, Florence Chiasson, Edmonton, twins Paula (Mrs. Harvey MacDonald), Coxheath, Pauline (Mrs. Barry MacMillan), Ontario, Eva Martin, Ontario, Tillie, Glace Bay and Cory (Mrs. Daniel Hiscott), Glace Bay and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Bridget and Mary and his brother, Thomas.
Family will receive friends and relatives at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church, McKays Corner with Fr. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only by request. Any memorials or donations in John’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.

Annie (Paruch) Kurchak
100, Glace Bay
Mrs. Annie (Paruch) Kurchak, 100, of Seaview Manor, Glace Say, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Skrzyszow, Poland, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Polka (Governat) Paruch.
She is survived by several nieces and a nephew.
Besides her parents, Annie was predeceased by her husband John, two brothers and a sister.
There will be no visitation. Funeral will be held today (Monday), Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations in Annie’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.

George Harris MacKay
76, Glace Bay
George Harris MacKay, 76, of 196 Connaught Ave., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late George and Hannah (Brown) MacKay.
George served with the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War from 1941 to 1945. He was also with the Air Frame Technicians in the Canadian Air Force until he retired in 1974.
George is survived by his wife, Wilhelmina (Gould) MacKay; daughters, Edith (Barry) Hemenway, British Columbia, Anne (Gerry) Mowry, P.E.I.; sons, Jim (Sue), Toronto, Ont., Harris (Sylvia), New Glasgow; sisters, Eileen Eisan, Toronto, Ont., Druie (Ken) Radway, Toronto, Ont., Margaret (Stanley) Hodder, Pictou; brothers, Melvin (Anita) MacKay, New Glasgow, Robert (Ada) MacKay, Glace Bay, Billie, Toronto, Ont.; grandchildren, Cathleen, Nicholas, Sarah, Michael, Alana, Jesse and two great-grandchildren, Amy and Steven.
George was predeceased by son, Michael, daughter, Patricia, a son in infancy and two sisters, Thelma and Edith.
Visitation for George will be held Thursday, March 8, 2001, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in The Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Friday, March 9, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle, Reserve Street, Glace Bay with Rev. Terrence Carew officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Glace Bay, Friday.
