Lello Barro
84, Glace Bay
Lello Barro, 84, of 150 Cottage St., Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Donkin, he was the son of the late Lorenzo and Regina (Sandre) Barro.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien. He was employed with the Cape Breton Municipality Department of Taxation for 27 years until his retirement, he worked many years for the Department of Highways.
Lello was a member of the Donkin Fire Department and was past fire chief, and also had a fire truck named after him, the ‘L. Barro Pumper’. He was recognized with a 30-year service award, he received a 50-year pin from Masons and also was a member of Thistle Lodge No. 36. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, a member of the Glace Bay Pensioners Club also a recipient of Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in Donkin.
Mr. Barro is survived by his wife, Violet (MacNeil) Barro; sons, Wayne (Millie), Terry (Dianne), both of Dartmouth, Lee (Roses), North Carolina; daughters, Lorna (Donald), Sydney River, Elizabeth, Dartmouth; grandchildren, Terry, Kim, Blair, Kelly, Greg, Jennifer, Valerie, Michael, Wendy; 12 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Violet, Irene, Lynda, all of Glace Bay, Neil, Nictaux, Wayne, Mammonos Plains; 10 step-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ada (Briggs) Barro, three sisters, Mary, Edith, Cecilia, brothers, Dino and Cyril.
Visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. in St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien with the Rev. Paul C. Findlay officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Road.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of one’s choice.
Mason members will meet at the funeral home Friday at 7 p.m. for a service.

Stone (William) Melnick
88, Glace Bay
Stone (William) Melnick, 88, Glace Bay, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Sydney on Nov. 1, 1912, he was the son of the late Iwan (John) and Maria (Klimkovitch) Melnick.
He served overseas in the First World War with the Canadian Armed Forces and is a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128.
Stone will be sadly missed by his daughters, Brenda Melnick and Patricia Melnick, Sydney, and Marlene (Hans Peitchman), Ontario; sister, Anna (Louis Martinello), Sydney, and brother-in-law, William Banfield, Louisbourg. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lillian (Marsh) Melnick, his parents, sister, Sonia, and five brothers, Joe, Nick, Peter, Paul and Mike.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Thursday 2 p.m., with Capt. Morris Vincent and Wanda Vincent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army.

Edward (Eddie) Silbert
84, Glace Bay
Edward (Eddie) Silbert, 84, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, and formerly of South Street, Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Isadore and Freda (Hoffman) Silbert.
He was the loving brother of Samuel Gary Silbert and the brother-in-law of the late Ruth Silbert, devoted uncle of Dr. Ian and Fran Silbert, and grand-uncle of Ryan Silbert.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m., in the Sons of Israel Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Shiva will take place at the home of Gary Silbert, 1 Majestic Court, Toronto, Ont., M6B 3K2.

Viola Beatrice (Clark) Tait
1924-2000
Viola Beatrice (Clark) Tait of Montreal, formerly of Glace Bay, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Clark.
Viola is survived by her daughter, Irene (Pierre Edmund), with whom she resided and by two sons, Danny and Bobby, both of British Columbia. Also surviving are devoted grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Relatives in Cape Breton mourning Viola's death are her sisters, Elizabeth Davies, Doris Carmichael and Frances Bond; brothers, Marcillin, Harold and Lorne Clark.
Viola was predeceased by her husband, Doug Tait of Montreal, brothers, Fred and Jim Clark and sister, Mary (Clark) Nicholson.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held in Viola's honour at the Chapel Funeral Home in Quebec.

Patrick James O'Reilly
Glace Bay
Patrick James O’Reilly, 72, of 989 Main St., Glace Bay, passed away, Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son the late Alphonse and Margaret (Mullins) O’Reilly.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Mr. O’Reilly was employed with Devco as a locomotive engineer retiring after 42 years of service.
He will be sadly missed by daughter, Kathleen O’Reilly, Glace Bay, and sister, Margaret Trytten, Glace Bay.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Gerry Walker, brothers, Ferdinand, Terrance and Fabian and sister, Ciss (Mrs. Majour Butts).
Visitation for the late Mr. O’Reilly will be held Thursday 7-9 p.m. and Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.

Teresa Politte
65, Glace Bay
Teresa Politte, 65, of 19 Birkley St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James Patrick and Elsie (Knowles) Gillis.
She was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
She is survived by her husband, Michael; two daughters, Patricia (Ken) MacQuarrie and Pauline (Harry) Wrathall, both of Halifax; three sisters, Ann Hart, Glace Bay, Gertrude Squires, Dartmouth, Jean Smith, Ontario; four grandchildren, Neil, Carl, David, and Barbara.
She was predeceased by brothers, Malcolm and James and a sister, Mary Griffin.
Visitation will take place Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church, Fr. John Graham officiating. Burial will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Teresa’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Susannah (Sue) Hyde Scott
76, Glace Bay
Susannah (Sue) Elizabeth Scott, 76, of 116 McLean St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Parson) Hyde.
She was a member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay.
Sue is survived by four sons, Gordon (Skippy), Reggie (Maureen), Gary (Debbie), David (Michele), one daughter, Mary (Vince) Warthall, all of Glace Bay; three grandchildren, Stephen Troy, Craig Gordon and Emma Marie; brother, George Hyde, Glace Bay.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon (Skip), son, George, brother, Robert and a sister, Nell.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. David MacLean officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to a charity of one’s choice.
