Elizabeth MacIntyre
82, Glace Bay
Elizabeth MacIntyre, 82 of Seaview Manor and formerly of Foundry Street, Glace Bay, died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at Seaview Manor.
Born in Donkin, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Lauchie and Margaret (MacPherson) MacKinnon.
Elizabeth was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church and the Golden Circle and a life member of A.M.S.
Elizabeth is survived by daughters, Brenda (Philip), Butler, New Glasgow, Wanda (Michael) Grande, Ont; son, Donald, New Glasgow; grandchildren, Keri, Kimberly MacIntyre, Lindsay, Jessica, Brennah Grande; sisters, Sarah Pitt, Montreal, Joyce (Chester) Pyne, Albert Bridge; also several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband, John Lauchie MacIntyre; sisters, Christene Ludwig, Catherine Booth, Effie MacDonald, Dorothy MacLeod; brothers, Neil, Alex, Johnnie, Rannie, Clarence and Emerson.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Interment will be in Loch-End Cemetery, Catalone.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Building Fund or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Gordon Theodore Budden
81, Glace Bay
Gordon Theodore Budden, 81 of 13 McKeigan St., Glace Bay, died peacefully at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Monday, Oct. 23, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Harrison and Elizabeth (Milley) Budden. He was a member of Holy Cross Church, he was employed with Devco for 43 years, retiring in 1982. Mr. Budden was an avid sportsman and he loved Loch Lomond.
Mr. Budden is survived by daughters, Ave Marie (Ed Rongone), Arling, Mass., Ardith “Mickey” (Chris Caldwell), Dominion; sons, Donald “Ted” (Mona), Glace Bay, John (Corinne), Kentville, N.S., Gordon (Janet), Wolfville, N.S., Lorne (Pauline), Reserve, Billy, Toronto; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and by a special friend, Sarah Morrison; sister, Ruth of Donkin, and brother, George of Birch Grove.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite; son, Brian; brothers, Nelson, Lauchie, Jimmy, Austin, Harry; sisters, Rachel Budden, Agnes Gallivan.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 26, 11 a.m. with Fr. John Graham officiating. Cremation to follow.

Funeral service for the late Gordon Theodore Budden, 81, of Glace Bay, who died Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, will be held Thursday, Oct. 26 at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, with Fr. John Graham officiating.
Kathleen (Kay) Maxwell
Glace Bay
Kathleen (Kay) Margaret Maxwell, a resident of Seaview Manor and former resident of 178 South St. and 54 Minto St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Allister and Mabel (Burchell) Calder. Kay was a member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay, and a former member of the UCW of Knox Church. She was also a member of the Isle Royale Chapter of the IODE and of the ladies auxiliary at the Glace Bay General Hospital. She enjoyed playing bridge for many years with a group of her closest friends. Kay loved her summers on the Mira with her family, relatives and friends - “all were welcome”. She spent many hours gardening and bird watching. She enjoyed music and had an appreciation of nature and a great respect for all living things with a special fondness for cats and so during her stay at the manor she was honored by the dignified visits of a special friend “Callie”.
Kay is survived by a daughter Beverley of Albert Bridge, Mira; daughter-in-law, Gertrude Maxwell, Dominion; grandchildren, Jamie Beaton, Toronto, Kathleen and Roy Maxwell, Dominion and three great-grandchildren, Cody, Brandon and Jordon.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Roy Maxwell; a son, Allister, and one brother, Robert Hugh Calder.
There will be no visitation by Kay’s request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service for Kay will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000, in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Rev. David MacLean officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Any memorials in Kay’s memory may be made to a favourite charity.
Neil Leonard (Len) Mackie
92, Glace Bay
Neil Leonard (Len) Mackie, 92, formerly of Highland Street, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Charlotte’s Guest Home, 25 Dominion St., Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Neil and Elizabeth (MacNeil) Mackie.
He entered the coal mines at the age of 15 and worked many jobs. He was an underground manager in No. 26 and in 1956 was a manager in No. 2 and No. 4 mines. He was a very active person in many organizations and particularly at St. Anthony’s Parish. He was one of the eldest altar servers and was recognized by the bishop and presented with a plaque. He loved helping people in need. Len and his wife operated the first licensed nursing home in Cape Breton. He also had a great love for working outside.
He will be sadly missed by sons, Neil Leonard and his four children, Doug, Lorna, Cheryl and Tanya and Angus and his two children Laurel and Neil Leonard, all of St. Albert, Alta. and brother, Cliff, Watertown, Mass.
Staff and residents of Charlotte’s Guest Home will also sadly miss Len.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Elizabeth (Bessie) MacIntosh (1982), brothers, Matt, Jim, Howard, Elmore and Dan, sisters, Leona, Irene and Veronica.
Visitation for the late Mr. Mackie will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, 2 p.m. in St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay, Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Effie (MacPherson) MacVicar
84, Glace Bay
Effie MacVicar, 84, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 31 Forest St., Glace Bay, died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the nursing home.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Angus and Mary Elizabeth (MacDonald) MacPherson.
Effie was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay and was very active in the church affairs.
Effie is survived by daughter, Sandra (Miles) Wilneff, Birch Grove; sons, Donald (Sharon), Angus (Diane) and Phillip, all of Glace Bay, Robert (Christine), Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Greg, Toronto, Sadie Whitney, Glace Bay, Margaret, Ontario; brother, Allan MacPherson, Ontario and a number of nieces and nephews.
Effie was predeceased by her husband, Elmer MacVicar, son, Garfield, sister, Ida and brother, Charles.
Visitation will be held today (Friday), Oct. 27, 2000, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Interment will be Black Brook Cemetery.
Donations may be made to St. Paul’s Building Fund.
Catherine McPhee
May 6, 1900 - October 26, 2000, Glace Bay
Mary Catherine McPhee, 100, of 48 Steele’s Hill, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully, Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Margaret (DeGaust) Steele.
Catherine was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish, and also a member of the Glace Bay Pensioners Association. She participated in bowling and cards well into her 90s, and enjoyed reading and baking. She possessed a true zest for life and received great pleasure from the company of her many friends. Catherine was instilled with a quick wit and possessed an acute sense of humor. She was affectionately known to all as “Nana.” The mutual affection she shared with family and friends was an example of her true character.
She is survived by sons, Bernie (Rosemarie), Francie (Sylvia), Harvey (Claire) and daughter, Patsy (late Roy Morrison), with whom she resided this past year. Nana is also survived by 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and two-great-great-grandchildren.
Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Angus in 1976 and daughters, Margie, 1981 (late Charles Lee), Marie in 1981 (late Paul Zorychta) and son, Joey, 1980. The eldest of seven children, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Visitation for the late Mrs. McPhee will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main Street, Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 2 p.m. in St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
