Viola Blanche MacLeod
87, Glace Bay
Viola Blanche MacLeod, 87, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, formerly of 40 Brookland St., passed away peacefully at the nursing home on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Lebus and Vanava (Langille) Miller.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay, and was involved with the Gorden Circle at the Church. She was a also a member of the Jubilee Rebekah Lodge No. 14 of Glace Bay and the Pythian Sisters.
Viola will be sadly missed by her sons, Donald (Gloria) and Gordon (Simone), brothers, Titus and Gordon, all of Glace Bay; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.
Viola was predeceased by her husband, Donald A. (Danny), brothers, William and Albert, sister, Maude Kuta.
Visitation was held Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held today (Tuesday) at 2:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney-Glace Bay Highway.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
The Rebekah will meet at the funeral home tonight at 7 p.m. for service.

Ivan Edward Warren
80, Glace Bay
Ivan Edward Warren, 80, of 488 Donkin-Morien Highway, Tower Road, passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George and Jerusha (Uloth) Warren.
He was a member of Saint Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, and a former employee with the Cape Breton Development Corp., having worked in No. 11, No. 24 and Caledonia collieries and retired from No. 26 in 1980.
Ivan was a charter member (captain) of the Tower Road Fire Department.
He loved life and enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. In his younger years he was very active and interested in sports, playing softball and rugby. Ivan played on a championship team in the Inter-Provincial Softball League and is recognized in the Hall of Fame in Trenton, N.S.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 57 years, the former Mary Elizabeth ‘Mamie’ Sharpe; two daughters, Muriel (Mrs. Evan Anderson), Trenton, N.S., Joan (Mrs. Jim MacDonald), Sydney River; a brother, Willard, Glace Bay; a sister, Irene Swartzack, Glace Bay. Ivan is also survived by five grandchildren Dale and Raymond Anderson, Ryan Christian and Nicholas MacDonald; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Megan Anderson; and special friends, Vince and Dorothy Turner and family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Martha, Helen, and Florence and brothers, John, Harold, and Gerald.
Visitation for the late Ivan Warren will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Wednesday, from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Saint Mary’s Anglican Church with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Interment will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.
Any memorials in Ivan’s memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association, Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.

Veronica Karen Griffin
55, Kitchener, ON / Glace Bay
V. Karen Griffin, 55, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, in the Grand River Healthcare Complex, Kitchener, Ont., after a short and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Vera Griffin, Dominion Street, Passchendaele.
Karen is survived by her loving sister, Debbie Lee (John) Lewis, Glace Bay and three devoted brothers, George (Leonie), Moncton, N.B., William (Judy), Port Hawkesbury, N.S. and Joseph (Rosalie), Londonderry, N.S. and by her long time friend, Jean Kinnear.
Besides her loving family, she will be sadly missed by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts, many of whom she recently visited this past June while touring through Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, finally to arrive in her beloved Cape Breton.
She will always be remembered for her loving and caring ways, her quick wit, kind smile, her love for animals, music, the ocean and her family.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is to be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.

Annie MacDonald
87, Glace Bay
Annie (Kostey) MacDonald, 87, of 3 Argyle St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Montreal, she was the daughter of the late Timothy and Mary (Hoeda) Kostey.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. At an early age, the family moved from Montreal to Morien and Birch Grove then to Glace Bay, where she resided until her death.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Catherine (Frank) Brushett, Toronto, Ont. and Gloria (Paul) Mullins, Glace Bay; sisters, Pauline Kostey, Jenny Kennedy, Glace Bay and Sally Hart, New Waterford; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Nana you are safe in the arms of God’s love, special granddaughter, Darlene.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Alex S. ‘Baker’ MacDonald, daughter, Mary Ann in infancy, grandson, Stephen Mullins, brothers, James and Mike.
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacDonald will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy and Fr. Stanley MacDonald officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Anna (Bond) MacKenzie
80, Glace Bay
Anna L. MacKenzie, 80, of 3B Poloni Crescent Dr., Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Westley and Francis (Bishop) Bond. She was a member of the United Church.
Anna is survived by her daughter, Louise Snow, with whom she resided; son, Stanley (Trudy), Birch Grove; grandsons, Kirk and Kelly Peach, Edmonton, Alta., Jamie MacKenzie, Birch Grove; two great-grandchildren, Mitchell and Brianna Peach, Edmonton; two sisters, Erna (Lauchie) MacDonald, Hillside, Mira, and Mrs. Alma Dejeet, Glace Bay.
Anna is predeceased by her husband, James (Mack) MacKenzie, son, James R. MacKenzie, sisters, Doris Bond, Norma MacLean, brothers, Carmen, Allister and Westley Bond.
Visitation will be held today (Friday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, in the Patten Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Anna’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice.

Themis Chronis
80, Glace Bay
Themis Chronis, 80, of 11 Marconi St., Glace Bay, passed away Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, at home.
Born in Milos, Greece, in 1920, he was the son of the late Vasilios and Maria (Vihos) Chronis.
He arrived in Canada in 1954. He first worked in Montreal as a draftsman and shortly afterward he came to Glace Bay to work for George Markadonis Shoe Repairs. He later owned and operated the business for many years and was co-owner and manager with his son Billy for the past fifteen years. Markadonis Shoe Repair officially closed its doors on Sept. 30, 2000.
He was a member of St. Anargyree Greek Orthodox Church, Glace Bay. He was a known avid gardener.
He is survived by his son Billy, Glace Bay; daughters, Eleni (Mrs. Darrell Wade), Greenwood, N.S., and their mother Jennie (Markadonis); a brother, Louis, Glace Bay; sisters, Catherine Makarios and Ifigenia Rakkas, both of Greece, Margarita “Lula” Kyritsis, Montreal; three grandchildren, Jeremy Chronis, and Jason and Melina Wade.
Visitation will be at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Monday from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be Wednesday 2 p.m. in St. Anargyree Greek Orthodox Church, Rev. Theador Efthimiadis will officiate. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations in Mr. Chronis’s memory may be made to St. Anargyree Church.
