Patrick R. Neville
72, Glace Bay
Patrick R. Neville, 72, of 72 Maple Ave., Glace Bay passed away Thursday, Nov. 3, 2000, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Conron) Neville. Patrick was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay. He was employed with Sydney Steel, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of Branch No. 3 Legion, Glace Bay.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Jessie Morrison; daughter, Brenda (Frank) Ashe, Birch Grove; son, Darrell, at home; brother, Fabian, Ontario; sisters, Clarissa “Russie” (Roddie) MacDonald, Lillian (Dan) Roney, both of Ontario, and Carmie (Alex) MacIntosh, Glace Bay. Also surviving is a special granddaughter Patricia and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Lorna Gillis; and brothers, Louis, Jimmie and Laddie.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Neville. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay. Interment at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.<
Thomas Scott Spencer (Tommy Gun)
New Waterford
Passed away peacefully at Fairview Lodge, Whitby, Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the age of 76.
Proud member of the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame.
Beloved father of Sharon Spencer, Tom and Jody Spencer, Ruth (nee Spencer) and Greg Olley, Laura Spencer and David Booth. Proud grandfather of Amy, Kristoffer, Sally, Pamela, Charlotte and Rachel. Former husband to Jean Machmer (nee MacDougall) and much loved brother of Bill (Willie) Spencer.
Predeceased by his wife, Mary (Gillingham) Spencer.
A memorial service will be held at the W.C. Town Funeral Home Chapel, 110 Dundas St. E, Whitby (905) 668-3410 on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000 at 2 p.m. Cremation.
In memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Alzheimer Society.
Special thanks to the staff of Fairview Lodge Home in Whitby and Lakeview Manor in Beaverton for all of their support and care.
Interment will take place at a later date in New Waterford, N.S.
Abraham 'Abe' Sweet
85, Glace Bay
Abraham Sweet, 85, of Gallant St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Neil’s Harbour, he was the only child born to the late Councilman George Sweet and Sara Ann (Buffett) Sweet.
Abe was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, and worked all his life in the fishing industry until he retired in 1990.
Abe was a quiet yet humble gentleman with a heart of gold. His life was devoted to his family to whom he left many precious memories.
Abe will be sadly missed yet kept close at heart by his son, Walter and daughter-in-law Sheila and their children, a grandson Brent who was raised as his son, a daughter Joyce (John Toomy), daughter-in-law Eva, eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Abe was predeceased by his wife of 52 years the former Ellen Ingraham and son Arthur.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Interment will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Hazel Winters
88, Glace Bay
Hazel Winters, 88, of 31 Boyd St., Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Catherine (Andrews) Tucker.
She was the last living member of the Tucker family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph and her sisters, Helen Cadegan, Mable and Florence and by brothers, George, Phil, Terry, and Ernie.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay.
She will be missed by all those people whose lives she touched.
Visitation for the late Hazel Winters will be held Friday, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, Canon Fev Arnold officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Thomas George Snook
70, Glace Bay
Thomas George Snook, 70, of 96 Quarry Road, Glace Bay, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Little Bay West, Fortune Bay, Nfld., he was the son of the late Morgan and Julia (Strowbridge) Snook. Before moving to Glace Bay Tom fished off the Grand Banks in Newfoundland and in Glace Bay he worked with Cadegan Fish Plant and 24 years with Devco having retired in 1972.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay. He was Past President of Glace Bay Minor Hockey. He was very active in broom ball and a member of the Orange Lodge.
Tom is survived by his wife Isabel (Sealey) Snook, daughter Judy (Billy) Pilling, Glace Bay, sons, Kenneth (Joanne), Cornerbrook, Nfld., Morgan (Mitch) Cambridge, Ont., sister Susie (Mrs. John Deveaux), Sydney, brothers, Steve (Viola), Glace Bay, Henry (Mary), Glace Bay, special sister-in-law Sally Bodhaine and niece Margie, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Tom was predeceased by a brother and sister in infancy.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Interment will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Road.

Arthur 'Buddy' Lee
76, Glace Bay
Arthur Frances Lee Jr. ‘Buddy’, 67, of 4 McLeod’s Rd., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at home, Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, surrounded by his loving family, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of he late Arthur and Elizabeth (McInnis) Lee.
‘Buddy’ was a member of St. John The Baptist Church, Glace Bay. He will be remembered in the hearts of his family for his kind heart, sense of humour and his devoted love of his children and grandchildren. ‘Buddy’ was employed as a truck driver for many years in Ontario and Glace Bay. For a number of years he was employed at No. 20 Colliery in Glace Bay.
Surviving are his wife and the mother of his four children, Doris (MacNeil) Lee; two daughters, Raylene, at home and Edna (Van) Budden, Reserve Mines; two sons, Alexander (Delores) Lee, Glace Bay and Bernie (Allison) Lee, Glace Bay; two stepchildren, Stephen Bickerton, California and Trina Bickerton, Halifax. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Jennifer, Justin, Lisa, Joni, Alex, Katie, Stacey, Amanda and his great-grandchildren, Jesse, Jami Dawn, Danielle and Jamie. He is survived by sisters, Elizabeth MacLeod, Nora (Jim) Jackson, Margaret MacKenzie, Rachael Shaw, Charlene (Reggie) Egan, all of Glace Bay, Edna Christie, Fort Erie, Ont.
‘Buddy’ was predeceased by his loving wife of a previous marriage, Eileen Elizabeth (Bryden) Lee, two brothers, Alexander and James Lee, one sister, Emma (Lee) Snyder.
‘Da’ and our family wish to extend our heartfelt and deepest thanks to the Palliative Care, especially Cathy Ferguson, whom ‘Da’ called his ‘special angel’, Dr. Bangeree, and VON for providing such excellent care ‘at home’ which afforded us a very special time to treasure each and every moment we had left together.
Visitation will be at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, Glace Bay, Thursday at 11 a.m. Rev. Dan McGillvray officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations in ‘Da’s’ memory may be made to the Palliative Care Society of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
