Lloyd ‘Buddy’ Bond
72, Glace Bay
Lloyd ‘Buddy’ Bond of 16 Tennyson St., Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, South Street.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Colin and Sue (Somerton) Bond.
Buddy was a member of St. Leo’s Parish, Glace Bay, and was employed with Devco until his retirement in 1986. During his employment Buddy volunteered his services with the Draegerman Mine Rescue Team which received the recognition for being the first team to win a national championship which was held in Saskatoon, Sask. in 1969.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jenny (MacDonald) Bond; son, Darrell (Wanda), Florence, C.B. and daughter, Janice, at home; two grandchildren, Jenna Morgan and Brandon Lloyd and by his little buddy, Oprah; a brother, Len (Sis); three sisters, Reta (Chester) Clements, Hattie Murrant, all of Glace Bay, Jean (Jerry) Morrison, Oshawa, Ont.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Allie, sister, Ada Petrie and two infant brothers.
We the family would like to thank the homecare workers who were so good to Buddy especially Judy Power, Darlene Melnick and Tony Leudy.
Visitation will be at Curry’s Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Friday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in St. Leo’s Church Saturday at 11 a.m. Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Mary Olive Gillis
87, Glace Bay
Mary Olive Gillis, 87, formerly of 735 Mechanic St., Glace Bay and a resident of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at the nursing home.
Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Anastasia (Boudreau) Lever.
Mrs. Gillis was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. She was very active within the St. Anne’s Society.
‘Aunt Mary’ was a very devoted wife, mother and granddaughter. She will be sadly missed by son, Ronald (wife Karen), Glace Bay; two grandsons, Dennis, Halifax and Ernest, Boston, Mass.; granddaughter, Annette, Fredericton, N.B.; sisters, Marie (Teasie) LeBlanc, Glace Bay and Alice Flynn, New Jersey, and brothers, George, Sydney, and Albert (Chill), Scarborough, Ont.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dennis Malcolm in 1967, brothers, Joseph, Dennis Hector (Arthur), Andrew, John Joe, Alfred (Bebe) and Harry (Brother Liqouri), sisters, Annie Mae Brown, Isabel Jessome and Margaret LeBlanc.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Gillis will be held Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay
Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. John Graham officiating.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Mary’s memory to charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Armand Alexander (Chandoiseau) Burdge
83, Glace Bay
Armand Alexander (Chandoiseau) Burdge, 83, of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, formerly of Sydney, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Armand and Rachel Chandoiseau of Sydney.
Armand served overseas as an Anti-aircraft gunner where he was wounded and decorated.
He was a member of the Elks Club, Club 55, and also he was an avid bowler.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are two daughters, Denise (Kevin) McAlea, London, England, and Judith (Liam) Tromans, Kempt Head, N.S., and his granddaughter Leigh McAlea.
Predeceased by his wife Mabel (Myers), two sons, Brian and Basil in infancy.
The late Mr. Burdge will have no visitation as cremation has taken place. There will be a private family interment at St. Anthony Daniel Parish Cemetery, Sydney, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating.
The family would like to thank the staff of Taigh Na Mara for their support as well as the nurses of the Coronary Care Unit of the Regional Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Ken Singleton
67, Glace Bay
Ken Singleton, 67, of Glace Bay, formerly of Montreal, Que., passed away suddenly on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax.
Born in London, Ont., he was the son of the late James Campbell and Elizabeth Singleton of Montreal, Que.
He was a leading seaman Fourth Class during the Korean conflict. He was employed by General Motors Canada and the Canadian Coast Gurard and recently retired from the Office of Commissionaires at the Sydney Airport.
He is survived by his companion, Barbara Halliday; five daughters, Leeann Singleton (Calder MacKay), Lynn Singleton, Lezlee (Ken) Tracey, Laura (Peter) Groom, all of Glace Bay, Lauretta (Paul) Lyons, Windsor, N.S.; a son, Ken James (Janet Campbell), also of Glace Bay, all who are the children of Irene Burton Moore, Ontario; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Ken was predeceased by a daughter, Lorna in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. There will be visitation for family and friends Wednesday, Nov. 29, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Marconi St., Glace Bay, with Rev. Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.

Margaret Daye
98, Glace Bay
Margaret Daye, 98, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, formerly of 556 Main St., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Germany, she was a daughter of the late Karl and Katherine (Hefferman) Young. Her family was her life and her joy.
Surviving are her daughter, Teresa, Glace Bay; sons, Patrick (Tamar), Glace Bay, Thomas, Sydney, Martin, Halifax; six grandchildren, Brian, Leslie, Helen, Thomas, Jason and Kelly; a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas J. Daye and sons, Arthur and Robert.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Cremation has taken place. A private family burial will follow.
Thank you to the nursing staff at Victoria Haven and the Glace Bay Heath Care Complex, who looked after “Ma” so well.

Funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, 775 Main St., Glace Bay with Rev. P. Clifford Bisson officiating. Private burial to follow in St. Josephıs Cemetery, MacLeod's Road, Glace Bay.
