Catherine Ann McSween
88, Glace Bay
Catherine Ann McSween, 88, of 368 King Edward St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Joseph and Mary Catherine (McNeil) MacDonald.
Catherine was a member of St. Anne’s Parish, Glace Bay. She was a school teacher retiring from St. Michael’s Junior High, Glace Bay. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening and bowling.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Mary Greta (Rollie) Fletcher, Ontario, Alice Theresa (Russ) Brabant, Toronto and Jessie Marie (Art) Sutherland, Ottawa; sons, James Hugh ‘Jimmie’, Bowmanville, Ont., and Roderick Joseph (Anna), Glace Bay; brother, Michael MacDonald, Mira; sisters, Margie Devereux, Sydney, Mary Kennedy, Scotchtown. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by husband Murdock, brothers, Hector and Stevie MacDonald.
Visitation for the late Mrs. McSween will be held Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery.
Everett Reginald Bagnell
80, Glace Bay
Everett Reginald Bagnell, 80, of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, formerly of Boulderwood Drive, Sydney, passed away at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility, on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000.
Born in Gabarus, he was the son of the late James and Amy (MacGillivary) Bagnell.
Everett was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas on HMCS Georgian. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 12, recipient of the Meritorious Award and Palm Leaf. He was also a member of the Naval Veterans Association and the Federal Superannuates. A plumber by trade, Everett was retired from the Coast Guard College and a member of St. Andrews United Church, Sydney.
Surviving are his wife, Elva Bernice (Medicraft) and sisters, Margaret Bagnell, Howie Centre and Lucille Goreham, Welland, Ont.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Jean (Harrigan) and sister, Agnes.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrews United Church, Sydney, Saturday 2 p.m. with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Taigh Na Mara Bus Fund or a charity of choice.
Gordon Donovan
86, Glace Bay
Gordon Donovan, 86, of 39 Hillside Ave., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Glace Bay.
Born in Ingonish Centre, he was the son of the late Leo and Mary (MacDermid) Donovan.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. He was a fireman, retiring from the Sydney Airport. Gordon was an overseas veteran of the Second World War. He was also a member of Branch No. 40 Legion, Glace Bay.
He will be sadly missed by daughters, Linda (Jim) Donovan, Thunder Bay, Ont., and Tracey Brufatto, Truro; son, Henry (Kendra), Hamilton, Ont. Also surviving are grandchildren, Thomas, Katelyn, Scott, Stephen, Nicholas and Alyxandra.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Anne Roberts, brothers, Russell, Wilson and Donald.
Visitation for the late Mr. Donovan will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations in Gordon’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Bernard Shaw
84, Glace Bay
Bernard Shaw, 84, formerly of 3 Summit St., Glace Bay and a resident of Taigh Na Mara, Veterans Wing, Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Taigh Na Mara.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Mary Ann (Burke) Shaw.
He was employed with Devco retiring from No. 26 Colliery in 1969. Mr. Shaw was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was a member of Branch 40 Legion, Glace Bay.
He will be sadly missed by daughters, Florence (Herbie) Somerton, Glace Bay and Linda Allison (Barry), Sydney; son, Andrew Shaw, Braemore Home; his brother, Elias, Berwick, N.S.; his sister, Catherine Ellen MacDonald, Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay. Also surviving are grandchildren, Darlene (Darin) White, Michael (Cynthia) Somerton and Cindy Somerton (Robin) and great-granddaughters, Courtney Somerton, Taylor White, Morgan Somerton and Breanna Somerton, several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Anna Crawford, sisters, Mary, Jean and Euphrasia and brothers, Joe, Bill and Gerard, in infancy.
Visitation for the late Mr. Shaw will be held Friday 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Funeral Home Chapel. Fr. Peter LeBlanc will be officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Dolores Slade, R.N., 80, of 296 Reserve St., Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Reserve Mines she was the daughter of the late Henry David and Mary Jane (Kanary) Marsh. She was a member of Holy Family Church, Glace Bay.
Dolores graduated from the St. Joseph School of Nursing Class of 1943. She served in the R.C.A.M.C. with the rank of Lt. (N.S.) She was a member of the St. Joseph School of Nursing Alumnae and the Nursing Sisters Assoc. of Canada (Sydney Branch).
She will be sadly missed by husband, Hartley; daughters, Kathy Merrifield, Kitchener, Ont. and Anne Marie, Toronto, Ont.; sons, Hartley, Rothesay, N.B., Joseph, Kincardine, Ont. and John, Quispamsis; brothers, Gannon (Brother Ninian) Mary Lake, Ont., Coady, Glace Bay, Dr. Stewart, Sydney, Fr. Anthony, Glace Bay and Joseph, Sydney; sisters, Zita Armishaw, Reserve Mines, Dophie, St. Catherines, Ont., Maurina, Glace Bay, Gilbert Rose, Halifax and Marie, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Jamie, Adam, Ashley, Steven, Logan, Jan, Nolan and Tannis; great-grandchildren, Reiley and Dana. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Joseph, James, Alphonse, Dennis, Sylvester ‘Son’, Henry ‘Fuff’, and sister Mary Cain.

Mary Ann “Annie Mae” (McLean) McIsaac, 79, of 34 Gannon Street, Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born in Benacadie West, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Tina (MacNeil) MacLennan. She was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. She was a devoted member of St. Anne’s DeBeupre. She loved dancing, family, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. She had a keen sense of humour and loved to laugh.
She will be sadly missed by husband, Tom McIsaac; son, John (Karen) MacLean, Sydney; daughters, Betty (Collie) O’Neil, Bateston, Lexie (Gordon) Reid, North Sydney, Anne (William) Daigle, Rexton, N.B., Marie (Woodroe) Steele, Glace Bay, Rose (Freeman) Dean, Dartmouth and Eileen Uare, British Columbia; stepson, Kevin (Debbie) McIsaac, Glace Bay; stepdaughter, Cathy (Donald) Campbell, Glace Bay; brothers, Neil Francis, Dan Dougall, Benacadie West, Malcolm, Sydney; sisters, Josie, Theresa, Westmount, Mary L., Glace Bay and Kay, Benacadie West. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Neil S.; twin brother, Alex, Jackie, Mich, Angus “Iha” and baby brother, Alex.
