Kenneth "Kenny" Hoffman
45, Glace Bay
Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Hoffman, 45, of Glace Bay, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Maxwell and Catherine ‘Sis’ (MacKay) Hoffman.
He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corporation with the railroad department. He was a member of Baptist United Church, Glace Bay.
Kenny is survived by his wife Bernadette; sisters, Betty Saccary, Glace Bay, and Marilyn (Mrs. Bruce Sarty), Lunenburg; brothers, Jimmie (Loretta), Joseph ‘Butch’ (Jean), Ralph (Belinda), all of Glace Bay, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation for the late Mr. Hoffman will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, in United Baptist Church, with Rev. Brian Barron officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association or United Baptist Church.
Harold Ashe
87, Glace Bay
Harold Ashe, 87, of 99 Second St., The Hub, died at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Saturday Dec. 23, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Willis and Sarah (Warford) Ashe.
He was an adherent of Warden United Church. Harold worked in the coal mines all his life.
Harold is survived by sons, Harold (Joan), Colin (Bertha), Eddy (Elaine), Brian, (Edna), all of Glace Bay, Robert (Carol), California, Wayne (Bev), Ontario; daughters, Olive (Mrs. Raymond McIsaac), Donna, Hazel (Danny); brother, Murray, Ontario. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Predeceased by his wife Lillian in 1999; brothers, George William, Percy, Stewart, Edward; sisters, Olive and Beulah.
Visitation for the late Mr. Ashe will be held today (Tuesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. Cremation to take place.
Harold Ashe
87, Glace Bay
Harold Ashe, 87, of 99 Second St., The Hub, died at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Saturday Dec. 23, 2000.
He was also predeceased by a daughter Dorothy and a brother Robert.
Visitation for the late Mr. Ashe will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. Cremation to take place.
Arthur Lewis Donovan
89, Glace Bay
The death of Art Donovan, 89, formerly of 32 Hillside Ave., Glace Bay, occurred suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at home.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Herbert and Theresa (Aucoin) Donovan.
Art was a retired electrician from the Cape Breton Development Corp. He served as petty officer in the Second World War. His many hobbies throughout the years included hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening and making golf equipment. Art was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Lingan Golf and Country Club.
He is survived by sons, Din (Connie), Stuart (Judy Ann), Bert (Gloria); daughter, Barbara Ann (Mrs. Matt Minglewood), all of Glace Bay; brothers, Jimmy, Newfoundland, Aubrey, Lower Sackville; sisters, Beatrice Head, New Waterford, Colleen Rideout, Glace Bay, Doris Marshal, Middleton, Dolly Grant, Truro, Agnes Costello, North Bay, Ont., Tessie Cyr, Chandler, Que. and Paula Smith, Dartmouth.
Besides his parents, Art was predeceased by his wife, Annie (McIntosh) Donovan; brothers, Herbert, Winnifred; sisters, Mary, Bertha and Gertrude.
Art leaves behind nine grandchildren, Gary and Mary Lee, Leah, Nancy, Jeff and Paul, Aynsley and Shane, Tara, and five great-grandchildren, Jeffrey William, Layla, Garrett, Corey and Kristen.
There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church with Fr. Douglas Murphy officiating. Condolences will be received by the family in the foyer of the church after mass. There will be a private burial at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes Ltd., 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Mary MacDonald
85, Glace Bay
Mary MacAskill, 85, of 88 Sixth St., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (MacKinnon) Gillis.
Mary was former member of Saint Anthony’s Parish and was active in the St. Anne’s Society during this time. For many years Mary made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and James ‘Panda’ Allison.
Mary is also survived by daughters, Isabel and Joan (Mrs. Dave Norris), both of Montreal; a son, Roy, Ontario; and by sisters, Florence (Mrs. Michael Nearing) and Elizabeth Barrett, both of Glace Bay. Mary’s greatest joy in her life was her grandchildren. She was a devoted grandmother to Sheri, Jamie, Dawn, and Ryan, with whom she lived, and Darren, Pierre, Nicole, Tracey, Lisa and Michael. She was affectionately known as ‘Nan’ not only to her grandchildren but to their friends, whom she watched grow. She will he missed by special friends Lisa, Adrian, Angie, Courtney, Kelly, Billy, Earl, Simon, Jennifer, Brian, Danielle, Tracey and Ursula.
‘Nan’ welcomed everyone with a cup of tea and an open heart.
She was predeceased by her husband, Steve; sons, John and David; brothers, Rannie, Tom, Francie and Robert; and by sisters, Annie Mae Gillard and Gertrude Morrison. Visitation for the late Mary MacAskill will be held Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Saint Anthony’s Church with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Margaret MacDonald
92, Glace Bay
Margaret MacDonald, 92, a former long-time resident of 456 Second St., Glace Bay, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay.
She was born in Glace Bay and was the daughter of the late John J. and Josephine (Hall) Donovan.
She was former member of St. John the Baptist Parish. She first worked at the Sydney Steel Plant during the war years on the Rail Mill and later in the business office. For a period of time she operated Marg’s Lunch Counter, Lower Main St., Glace Bay, and also worked for a number of years at Diana Sweets in Sydney. Marg was a caring and charitable person.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Predeceased by her husband Norman, three brothers, Naish, George, and Jack, two sisters, Libby and Sadie.
Visitation for Marg was held Monday from 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated today (Tuesday) in St. John the Baptist Church at 11 a.m., with Rev. Paul McGillivray officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
A reception will follow the funeral in St. John’s Parish Hall for relatives and friends.
