Archibald 'Archie' Wood Palmer
90, Glace Bay
Archibald ‘Archie’ Wood Palmer, 90, of Charlotte’s Guest Home, and formerly of 191 Donkin Highway, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, Glace Bay.
Born in Littlehampton, England, he was the son of the late William and Beatrice Palmer.
He was employed as a shipwright and boatbuilder at the Naval Dockyard, Portsmouth, England, until his retirement in 1975. He was a member of the boxing club in England. He was also an avid sailor and crewed in yachting competitions and regattas in Portsmouth, England. Archie enjoyed gardening and carpentry and had a keen sense of humour and a great love of life.
Archie is survived by daughter Joy (Mrs. Lou Shaheen), Donkin; step-daughter, Valerie (Geoffrey) Webber, Isle of Wight, England; step-daughter, Sheila James, Barrie, Ont.; grandchildren, Justin, Chelsea, and Kaitlyn Shaheen.
Predeceased by his wife Vera; brothers, George and twin brother Geoffrey; sister Marjorie Townsend, all of Hampshire, England.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Port Caledonia, with Fr. Paul F. Findlay and Rev. Margaret Collins officiating.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Allan Stewart
Glace Bay
On Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, Allan Stewart, a resident of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, formerly of Row St., Bridgeport, passed away peacefully at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, Feb. 6, 1907, he was the son of the late Charles and Christine (MacLeod) Stewart.
Allan was a lifelong member of Chalmers United Church and a member of the IOOF Triune Lodge #75 and Aberdeen Lodge #68.
Allan is survived by his wife of 69 years, Florence (MacPherson) Stewart; daughter, Edna (Charles) MacDonald; sons, Allan (Sylvia), Stratford, Ont., Donald (Florence), Halifax, N.S., Robert (Beverly), Birch Grove; brother, Hugh ‘Buddy’ (Helen) Stewart. Also surviving are grandchildren, Stuart and George MacDonald, Allan and Heather Stewart, Charlene Graham, Tracey Stewart, Tammy Krasniqi, Lynn Yuill and four great-grandchildren.
Allan was predeceased by infant son, Charles; sisters, Dolena, Sarah, Mamie MacInnis, Bella Davidson, Effie MacIsaac, Margaret Morris, Mary MacLellan; and a brother Daniel at birth.
Visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Martha MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to Chalmers United Church or Victoria Haven Nursing Care.
Dora E. Chuppa
89, Sydney
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Dora E. Chuppa, peacefully at the MacGillivary Guest Home Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the age of 89 years.
Born in Grand Etang, she was the daughter of the late David and Cecile Doucet.
Dora was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish, Sydney, and is survived by daughters, Leona MacGillivary and Cecile (Brian) Beaton, both of Sydney; brothers, Alex Dan, Moncton, Wilbert, Lima, Peru, Charles, New Hampshire; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Twice married, she was predeceased by husbands, Victor Chaisson and John Chuppa, three sons, Daniel, Bernie, Victor Chaisson, and her brother Jimmy Doucet.
Visitation for Dora will be in the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony Daniel Church, with Rev. Leo Boone officiating. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to the MacGillivary Guest Home.

Frederick C. Stevenson
79, Glace Bay
Fred Stevenson, 79, of 1 Currie St., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Robert and Margaret (Cheyne) Stevenson.
He was an adherent of Warden United Church. He was a miner for 20 years and worked for the post office for 25 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a war veteran, serving overseas during the Second World War. He was a past member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He played softball for the Bay Byes and Caledonia Aces. He was past member of the Glace Bay Pensioners Club. He was a member of the Normandy Veterans Association. He was an avid reader, dedicated family man and enjoyed life.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosella (Connolly) Stevenson; three daughters, Elaine (Kent Hayley), Halifax, Brenda (Dave Krewenki), Michelle (Stephen Jamieson), Glace Bay; a son, Gary (Ann), Fort McMurray, Alta.; seven grandchildren, Condea, Cheyne, Darla, Chad, Mitchell, Matthew and Katie; great-grandson, Zachary. Also survived by two sisters, Olive MacLeod, Ontario, Margie Currie, Glace Bay; brother, Robert, Stephenville, Nfld.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Molly and Helen.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at McGillivray’s Funeral Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Friday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. with Martha MacDonald officiating.

Regina Mary ‘Jean’ White
78, Glace Bay
Regina Mary ‘Jean’ White, 78, formerly of 154 Wallace Rd., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at the home of her son Terry on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, surrounded by her adoring family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Catherine (Walsh) Ford.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, Glace Bay, and while residing with her daughter Donna in Dominion she attended St. Eugene’s Church. She had a deep and abiding faith.
She was a loving mother to sons, Jim (Raylene), Terry (Joanne), both of Glace Bay, and Brian (Debbie), and her only daughter, Donna, both of Dominion. She was a devoted grandmother to Andrea, Jason, Craig, Cory, Ryan, Aaron and Katie, all of whom will miss her deeply. Also surviving are a brother, Tom Ford (Theresa), Glace Bay, several close nieces and nephews and a son-in-law, Geordie.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Alex as well as two brothers, Pat and John and a sister, Marie.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., today (Thursday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday in St. John the Baptist Church Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
