Wm. M. 'Bill' MacMillian
96, Sydney
Wm. M. (Bill) MacMillan, 96, of Union Street, Sydney, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Albert Bridge, he was the son of the late Angus and Josie (MacDonald) MacMillan.
Bill retired in 1957 as tax collector for Cape Breton County. He attended Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, Jean (Jefferson); three nieces, Margaret (Mrs. Edgar Mooney), Laura and Joan (Mrs. Don Crouse); nephew, James D. (Mary) MacKay and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Predeceased by brothers, John A. and Alex S.; sisters, Margaret and Drina MacKay.
Visitation will be today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel where services will take place 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Burial in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone, in the spring.
No flowers please. Memorials to Cape Breton Palliative Care.
Dorothy MacPhee
76, Sydney
Dorothy (Doyle) MacPhee, 76, of Pleasant Street, Sydney, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Seward and Dorothy (Lloyd) Doyle.
She was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney.
Surviving are her husband, James; daughters, Jane (Robin) Parke, Toronto, Ont., Judith, Sydney, Eleanor, Kitchener, Ont.; sons, Gary (Sheila), Guelph, Ont., Roger (Judi), Dartmouth; seven grandchildren; two great-granddaughters. She also leaves to mourn two brothers Lloyd ‘Buff’ Doyle, Coxheath and Phonse Doyle, Sydney.
Predeceased by her brother, Frank.
The late Mrs. MacPhee will have visitation Tuesday, Jan. 9, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church, Fr. A. O’Connor and Fr. N. MacPhee officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MacGillivray Guest Home, Sydney, or the Arthritis Society of Canada.
Doris Elizabeth Spinney
85, Glace Bay
Doris Elizabeth Spinney, 85, of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, formerly of Wilson Road, Reserve, and later of Kennedy Drive, Glace Bay, passed away at the manor, Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, from complications of Parkinson's Disease.
Doris was born in Portsmouth, England, in 1915.
Doris was a midwife in England during the Second World War, where she met and married her husband Paul, who was serving overseas in the medical corps. She came to Canada in 1945 as a war bride, living in Annapolis Valley and later settling in Reserve Mines, which she always considered home.
Doris was a member of the War Brides Association, Glace Bay Garden Club, the League of Mercy and was a true Christian Soldier of the Glace Bay Salvation Army.
Doris will be missed by family and friends, especially for her dry humour and wit.
Surviving are her daughter, Elaine (Keith) Northrop, Lower Sackville; son, Alan (companion Betty), South Street, Glace Bay; sister, Joyce (Clifford) Strudwick, England; and many nieces and nephews in England and Australia. Also grandchildren, Kimberly and Brett Northrop, Lower Sackville, Alan Jr., Ontario, Brian and Jennifer Spinney, Glace Bay.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Paul, in 1985; daughter-in-law, Rose Spinney; grandson, William Spinney; and by brothers and sisters in England.
As in life, Doris demonstrated her caring nature in death by donating her body to science (Dalhousie Medical Centre) and her soul to God. Memorial service will be held at a later date at the Glace Bay Salvation Army Citadel.
Florence Stewart
95, Glace Bay
Florence Stewart, 95, a resident of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, and formerly of Row Street, Bridgeport, passed away peacefully, Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Victoria Haven, surrounded by family.
Born in Glace Bay, April 4, 1905, Florence was the daughter of the late Donald ‘Dan’ and Julia (MacIntosh) MacPherson of Dominion.
Florence was a member of Chalmers United Church, Dominion and a life member of the United Church Women.
Florence is survived by daughter, Edna (Charles) MacDonald, Glace Bay; sons, Allan (Sylvia), Stratford, Ont., Donald (Florence), Dartmouth, and Robert (Beverly), Birch Grove. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Stuart and George MacDonald, Allan and Heather Stewart, Lynn Yuill, Charlene Graham, Tammy Krasniqi, Tracey Stewart and four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Johnelle, Aidan and Anton.
Florence was predeceased two weeks ago by her husband of 69 years, Allan Stewart, son, Charles at birth, brothers, Ronald, Rannie, Daniel, Malcolm and John Albert, sisters, Blanche, Katie and Edna.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 11 from 1-2 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with funeral to follow in the chapel at 2 p.m. Martha MacDonald will be officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to Chalmers United Church, Victoria Haven Nursing Home or charity of choice.
Richard 'Dick' McCarthy
68, Glace Bay
Richard ‘Dick’ McCarthy, 68, of Glace Bay, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Martin and Mary Alice (McInnis) McCarthy.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport, served three years with the Canadian Armed Forces and worked 38 years with the Cape Breton Development Corp.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed music, camping and loved spending quality time with his family and friends.
Richard is survived by his wife, the former Mable Lynk; six daughters, Mary (Greg) McNeil, Betty Ann (Tiny) Lynk, Freda (Earl) Rea, Martha (Wayne), all of Glace Bay, Brenda (Gerald) Smith, Dominion, Linda (David) McInnis, Lower Sackville; four sons, Greg (Doris Lynn), Darren (Wendy), Glace Bay, Joe (Yvonne) and Dennis (Tammy), Ontario. He is also survived by one sister, Ann Tobin, Ontario, and by 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers, Martin, Tom and Joseph, sister, Agnes Piercey and granddaughter, Vicki Smith.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Funeral will be held today (Friday) at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Arrangements are entrusted to the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Gerard Boone
68, Glace Bay
Gerard Boone, 68, of 187 Wallace's Road, Glace Bay, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William and Lucy (MacKinnon) Boone.
He was a member of Saint John’s Church, Glace Bay. Gerard worked in the coal mines and also as a carpenter.
He is survived by brothers, William, of Wilmot, N.S., and Russell, Stratford, Ont.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Chermaine ‘Sis’.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will take place at a later date.
