Barbara MacDonald Turner
Glace Bay
Barbara Turner, lately of Seaview Manor and a former resident of Victoria Street, Glace Bay, died after a brief illness on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001.
Born in 1905, she was the daughter of Dan Taylor and Barbara MacLeod MacDonald. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A 1928 graduate of the Glace Bay General Hospital, she worked for many years as the night supervisor of that institution and was an active member of the Nurses’ Alumni. She was a member of the Knox United Church and a member of the UCW. A past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star #12, she recently received her 50-year pin from the order.
Mrs. Turner is survived by a step-daughter, Dorothy Connelly, Burnaby, B.C. and several step-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen; step-daughter, Evelyn; brothers, John A., Donald, and Stewart; sisters, Martha, Annie, Katie, Flora, Ida and Alexis.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Francis Xavier Gillis
83, Glace Bay
Francis Xavier Gillis, 83, of 33 A Argyle St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Charles and Hilda (Clyburn) Gillis.
He was a member of St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. He was employed at Point Edward Naval Base as a labourer. He was a member of Branch No. 3 and No. 40 legions, Glace Bay. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas from 1939 to 1945. Mr. Gillis was wounded in action and served in the Peace War.
He will be sadly missed by sons, Joseph and Charlie, both of Glace Bay and Stephen, Sydney; nephews, Danny Campbell, Glace Bay. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Mary Petrie, son, Gilbert and daughter, Genevieve in infancy; brother, Charles, sister, Nellie Campbell and stepsister, Lena MacDonald.
Visitation for the late Mr. Gillis will be held Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Donations in Mr. Gillis’ memory to the Veteran’s Comfort Fund or CNIB are suggested as expressions of sympathy.
Edward Neil MacDonald
57, Glace Bay
Edward N. MacDonald, 57, of 76 Quarry Rd., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Clarice (Buckler) MacDonald and the late Neil MacDonald.
Edward was employed at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital in Ontario. He was a member of Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle, Glace Bay. Edward was an avid CB radio operator. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Besides his mother, he is survived by sisters, Shirley Cole, Glace Bay, Joan (Mrs. Grant Johnson), Toronto; brothers, Aubrey (Wilma) MacDonald, Glace Bay, Sheldon (Lola) MacDonald, Eric (Linda) MacDonald, all of Kitchener, Ont.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by brother, Archie MacDonald, sister, Violet Pipe, nephew, Darryl Neil MacDonald.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacDonald will be held Tuesday, Jan. 23, from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Bethel Pentecostal Tabernacle, with Rev. Terrence Carew officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Diabetes Association of N.S.
Ronald Francis 'Frank' Lee
93, Glace Bay
Ronald Francis ‘Frank’ Lee, 93, of 12 Sharpe’s Lane, Glace Bay, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Lee was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay. He was born in Glace Bay and was employed with Devco.
He will be sadly missed by sons, Ronald Francis (Mary) and Joseph Charles (Theresa), both of Sydney; and five grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Susan Herritt.
Visitation for the late Mr. Lee will be held Thursday, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be held Friday, 10 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Church, Glace Bay, Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Mary Fraser
88, Glace Bay
Mary Fraser, 88, of 40 Catherine St., Glace Bay, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in New Aberdeen, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Mugford) North.
She was a longtime member of Knox United Church and choir and an active member of the Cancer Society. Her greatest pleasure was working in her garden and she was a member of the Garden Club. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends. Mary led a very active life and will be missed by many.
Mary graduated from Glace Bay General Hospital as a Registered Nurse and specialized as a lab technician. She was employed with Glace Bay General Hospital for many years.
She is survived by daughter, Mary Elizabeth Fraser-Pitt (Kelly); brother, Wilfred (Virtue) North, Shubenacadie; sister, Pearl MacVicar, Sydney River; grandchildren, Elizabeth Dorren (Brad), and Kevin James Bates, both in Calgary, Alta.; two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Ashley Dorren; brothers-in-law, Allister and Graham Fraser, both of Baddeck; cousin Wallace and Evelyn Cave, Bay Roberts, Nfld., the Hart cousins in Margaree; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Graham James Fraser; brothers, William (Bill) North.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A memorial service will take place at Knox United Church at a later date and will be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Thomas Jones
59, Glace Bay
Thomas Jones, 59, of Tower Road, Glace Bay, passed away after a lengthy illness, Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the former Florence MacKinnon and the late Roderick Jones of Tower Road.
Tom was a member of St. Anthony Parish, Glace Bay. Tom was self-employed with Tom Jones Fuel wood for the past 20 years. He loved the outdoors and especially long walks in the woods.
He will be sadly missed by five brothers, Clarence, Eric, both of Tower Road, Leonard (Mary), Lingan Road, Stanley, Donkin, and Alex (Ann), Tower Road; four sisters, Helen (Bill) Stone, Halifax, Stella (Gordon) Hanshaw, Dartmouth, Cindy (David) Kinsman, Dartmouth, Alice (Keith) Morrison, Tower Road. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Jones. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, Fr. Peter LeBlanc will be officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tommy’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Society.
