Bernard Peter Chiasson
68, New Waterford
Bernard Peter Chiasson, 68 of 3241 Hinchey Ave., New Waterford, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Josephine (Chiasson), New Waterford and the late Timothy Chiasson.
Mr. Chiasson was a member of Mount Carmel Parish and the New Waterford Pensioners’ Club. He enjoyed a good game of tarbish. He worked in the coal mines from 1951-67 and worked with N.S. Power from 1967-1991. In his younger days, he was very athletic. He enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, rugby and boxing. Coaching up and coming young athletes was a great source of pleasure to him.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jean MacDonald; one daughter, Donna Chiasson, New Waterford; four sons, Raymond (Paula), Thompson, Man., Tim (Brenda), New Waterford, Paul, Halifax, Bernie (Lisa), Dartmouth; one brother, Michael (Ethel), Oshawa, Ont.; eight grandchildren, Deborah Jean, Michael, Timmy, Leigha, Josh, Cassie, Brett and Brittany.
He was predeceased by one sister, Pauline.
The late Mr. Chiasson will have no visitation, as cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held at Mount Carmel Church Saturday, 12:30 p.m. with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Elieen Carrigan
70, New Waterford
Eileen Carrigan, 70, 3373 Emerald St., New Waterford, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at home.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late James and Veronica (MacPherson) Gardiner. Mrs. Carrigan was a member of Mount Carmel Parish, New Waterford.
Surviving are four sons, Anthony (Marlene), James (Karen), both of Beechmont, Raymond (Melinda), New Waterford, and Michael (Collette), River Ryan; two daughters, Beverly, (Mrs. Leo MacLean), Scotchtown, and Marie, (Mrs. Frank MacPherson), New Waterford; a brother Malcolm, New Waterford; five sisters, Rhodina Ling and Veronica Rigby, Olive (Mrs. Donald Turnbull), all of New Waterford, Rose Henry, Scotchtown, and Theresa Moore, Sydney; daughter-in-law, Barbara, Lingan; 20 grandchildren, Kenny, Leonard, Shawn, Cheryl MacLean; Michael, Anne, Allison, Curtis, Celeste, Scott, Erin, Liam, Aidan, Tyler, Michelle, lan Carrigan; Chucky, Wayne, Craig MacNeil and Lindsay MacPherson; five great-grandchildren.
Eileen was predeceased by her husband, William Charles; a son Billy; a brother James and sisters Annie and Martha.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral 10 a.m. Thursday in Mount Carmel Church, Father Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Theresa Nicole Kanne
30, New Waterford
Theresa Nicole Kanne, 30, of New Waterford, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000.
Theresa was the daughter of Mona and Frederick T. Kanne, New Waterford.
Terry (Nickie) Nicole (Cole) or Theresa (as she was variously known by those who knew and loved her) was happiest when she was helping others. She was most recently employed at the EDS Customer Interaction Center. Until recently she was a volunteer monitor for the Community Access Project internet site at the enterprise center in Glace Bay. She had been actively involved in scouting as a Beaver leader in St. Michael’s (First Scotchtown Beaver Colony). She loved to sing karaoke and was also involved in the St. Michael’s Church Choir, Scotchtown.
Besides her parents, Theresa will be always loved and sadly missed by her fiance and soul mate, Ron Neville; sister P. Jacqueline (Mrs. Chris Purdy), Smithers, B.C.; brothers, Mark Tracey, Summerside, P.E.I.; her only niece, Amber Thibodeau, Smithers, B.C.; grandmother, Elga Harris, Summerside, P.E.I. She will also be missed by her family, friends, and co-workers.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will take place Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, Scotchtown. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Lung Association of Nova Scotia or the Community Access Program, Glace Bay.

Melaine A. Kearney
95, New Waterford
Melanie A. Kearney, 95, of Maple Hill Manor, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Belgium, she is the daughter of the late Marie and Gille Deschepper.
She was a member of Saint Agnes parish and the CWL.
Surviving are two sons, Michael (Alice), George (Justine), both of New Waterford; six grandchildren, Colleen, Marie, Melvin, Kevin, George and Patrick; 12 great-grandchildren, David, Melanie, Lonita, Shelly, Gareth, Melissa, Sheila, Michael, Amylynn, Jenna, David and Dale; one great-great-granddaughter, Shaylyn; one sister, Julie Becker, U.S.A.
She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick and a brother, Frank.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. in St. Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.

Joe Petrie
69, New Waterford
Joe Petrie, 69, of 5235 Union Highway, passed away peacefully after a brief illness (fight with cancer) in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000.
Born in River Ryan, he was a son of the late Louis and Mary (Quinn) Petrie, River Ryan. Joe was a member of St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. He was an avid violin player and lover of Scottish music. Joe will be remembered by his many CB radio friends.
He is survived by his companion of many years, Margie McLeod; two sisters, Lila (Mrs. George Butts), Truro and Kitty (Mrs. Harry Bibb), Winnipeg and a brother, Bernard (Joyce), New Waterford.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A family prayer service will be held Friday, 3:30 p.m. in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. Lester Marchand officiating. Burial at a later date.

Alice Hall
88, New Waterford
Alice Hall, 88, of Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at the New Waterford hospital.
Born May 18, 1912, in Glace Bay, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Minard and Jessie (MacMillan) Bickerton.
She was a former resident of 48 Queen St., Scotchtown, and a member of St. Michael’s Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Carmel McDonald and Joan Nolan, both of Kitchener, Ont.
She was predeceased by two sons, Douglas Christopher and Maynard Joseph; one son in infancy, David Miles; two brothers, Elmer and Chester Bickerton.
There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held today (Thursday), Oct. 5, 2000, in St. Michael’s Parish Cemetery, under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
