Roderick Joseph MacEachern
77, New Waterford
Roddie (The Bear) MacEachern, 3504 Wood Ave., New Waterford, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Angus and Mary Elizabeth ‘Molly’ (Cathcart) MacEachern.
Roddie was a member of Saint Agnes Church. He worked in No. 16 Colliery, the Corps of Commissionaires and worked with the New Waterford District School Board. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving are his companion of 33 years, Carmen and her daughter, Sherri; three daughters, Rodena (Taylor), Ontario, Mary (Byron) McVicar, Sydney River, Donna (Terry) White, Ontario; son, Don Charles (Valerie), Dominion; sister, Mary (Eddie) Hughes, Windsor, N.S.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Flora MacLean, two sons, Roger and Barry, two brothers, Dave and Byron, sister, Helena in childhood and a grandson, Bobby.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Friday 11:30 a.m. in St. Agnes Church, Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Donations to the Children’s Wish Foundation are requested as memorials.

Jessie MacKinnon
85, New Waterford
Jessie MacKinnon, 85, of Maple Hill Manor, formerly of 3339 MacLeod Ave., New Waterford, died peacefully in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000.
Jessie was a lifelong member of Mount Carmel parish. Born in Codroy Valley, Nfld., Jessie and her family moved to New Waterford in the mid-1920s. She was the daughter of the late Angus and Euphemia (MacIsaac) MacNeil.
Surviving are her son, Russell, daughter-in-law, Tish and her beloved grandson, Gregory, all of New Waterford; a niece, Elizabeth MacArthur; several nieces and nephews and special friends, Thresa White and Rita MacPherson.
She was predeceased by her husband, John A. MacKinnon in 1986, brothers, Jim, John, Allan, Angus, Danny and Hughie and sisters, Catherine and Elizabeth.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., today (Thursday) from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Friday 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery

William (Bill) Davis
75, New Waterford
William (Bill) Davis, 75, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late William and Myrtle (MacPherson) Davis. He was a member of St. Michael’s Church, a life-member of Unit 217, Army, Navy, Airforce, Veterans Association, New Waterford. He was also a member of the Army and Navy dart league. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Sydney Harbour Fortification Society. He was also a member of the Pensioners Club. Mr. Davis worked in Toronto for many years until his return to New Waterford.
Surviving are a daughter Alma, Toronto; four sons, Mark, Stephen, Phillip and Michael, all of Toronto; two sisters, Jean Young, New Waterford, Mayme McLellan, Toronto; many grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son John, four brothers, James, Robert, Thomas and Lloyd, four sisters, Alma Pheifer, Ann MacKenzie, Evelyn Woods, Edith Pelley.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Wednesday 10 a.m. St. Michael’s Church. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.

Velma J. Varrence
56, New Waterford
Velma J. Varrence, 56, died peacefully at her home 443 St. Ann St., New Waterford, on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000.
Born in New Aberdeen District, Glace Bay. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jennie (MacDonald) Gilbert. While in Glace Bay she attended school in New Aberdeen and was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish.
She was the loving and devoted mother of two daughters, Rhonda (Mrs. Michael Matthys), Calgary, Alberta, and Kelly (Mrs. Trevor Leadbeater), New Waterford; a son, Gilbert (Helen), New Waterford, and their father Joseph Varrence. Also surviving are two brothers, Joseph Jr., Ottawa and Vernon, Sydney; a sister, Linda (Mrs. Kenny Aucoin), Glace Bay. She was a special and devoted grandmother to Ryan, Joshua, Brandon, Evelyn, Farrah Dawn, Justin and Janelle.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by three brothers, Garfield, Gerald, and Calvin and a sister Pauline.
Visitation will be held in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay on Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be Thursday 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Daniel Myles Gillis
72, New Waterford
Daniel Myles Gillis, 72, 3535 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, died Saturday, October 14, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born Dec. 2, 1927, in New Waterford, he was a son of the late John A. and Mary Catherine (McFarland) Gillis. He was a member of St. Agnes Church, Branch #15 Royal Canadian Legion, New Waterford. He was also a veteran of the Korean War. He was employed as a commissionaire with the town of New Waterford and he was also employed as a mailman with Canada Post, Halifax, for a time.
Surviving are brother, Joseph, Antigonish, sisters, Sister Grace Gillis, Mt. Saint Vincent, Halifax, Rita Heffernan, Margaret “Peggy” Howell, Rose LeBlanc, both of Sydney, sister-in-law Martha Gillis with whom he resided and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, John A., Hugh, Alexander, John Harold, in infancy, sisters, Sister Mary Lydia, Tina Campbell, Mary Margaret in infancy.
Visitation was held Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral 10 a.m. today (Monday) in St. Agnes Church. Burial in the parish cemetery, Rev. Bob Neville officiating.

Joseph MacLean
8o, New Waterford
Joseph MacLean, 80, of New Waterford, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at home.
Born in River Denys, N.S., he was the son of the late Sam A. and Jessie (MacCormick) MacLean.
Surviving are daughter, Murial Ann Sabourin, New Waterford; sons, Roddie (Beverly) Sabourin, New Victoria, Jackie MacLean, Ottawa; one brother, John Angus, Port Hawkesbury; six grandchildren, Joanna, Christina, Candace, Kelsie, Katelynn and William.
Joseph was predeceased by his first wife, Bernice (Weatherbee) MacLean, common-law wife, Rita Doreen Sabourin, sisters, Sarah Mary (Sadie), Lizie, Flora Catherine, brothers, Hughie, Archie, Norman Dan, John Donald, Roddie.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Visitation will also take place Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. in Saint Dionysius Church, River Denys. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. in Saint Dionysius Church, River Denys with Rev. Allan MacPhee officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
