Rev. Pius Matthew Hawley
New Waterford
The Diocese of Antigonish is mourning the death of one of its beloved priests, Rev. Pius Matthew Hawley who died Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Fr. Hawley was born in New Waterford, N.S. Aug. 8, 1924, son of the late Matthew H. and Catherine (Pembroke) Hawley.
He received his early education at River Ryan, finished high school at Mount Carmel and studied at St. Francis Xavier University, graduating with an arts degree in 1947.
After graduation, he spent a year in Arnprior with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate before entering Holy Heart Seminary, Halifax, where he completed his theological studies for the priesthood.
He was ordained May 30, 1953, by the Most Rev. J.R. MacDonald in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Antigonish.
During his priestly career, he served as administrator, assistant and pastor in various parishes: Reserve, Bras d’Or, Sydney, Iona, Sydney Mines, Eskasoni, Baddeck, Main-a-Dieu, Georgeville, Glendale, and Port Morien.
Fr. Hawley was imbued with a truly missionary spirit. He was the superior of the first group of priests from this diocese who went to Honduras and Costa Rica in 1962 as part of the Antigonish Diocesan Program for Latin America and served there with distinction for several years.
Throughout his life, he maintained a love and concern for the Mi’kmaq of this diocese. On returning to Antigonish, Fr. Hawley joined the staff of St. F.X. University at the Coady International Institute, was a member of the Senate of Priests and chaplain at Bethany Motherhouse. Because of ill-health, Fr. Hawley retired in September 1999.
Fr. Hawley is survived by four sisters, Adeline MacDonald, R.N., of 13 Logue Dr., Sydney, Anna Hussey, London, Ont., Kathleen Grieve, R.N. and Winnifred Russell, R.N., both of Norton, Mass., and and sister-in-law, Genevieve Hawley, River Ryan. He is also survived by three brothers, James and Frank, River Ryan and Bernard, Maple Hill Manor.
Besides his parents, Fr. Hawley was predeceased by a brother, Patrick.
His remains will rest at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Friday from 2-4 p.m. A Bible Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Michael’s Church, Scotchtown. Saturday his remains will rest at Gabriel Centre, Eskasoni, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday the remains will be transferred to Holy Family Church at noon and a Bible Vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral mass to take place at Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, Monday at 2 p.m. with Bishop Colin Campbell and the priests of the diocese concelebrating. Burial will take place in Eskasoni. Funeral is under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Marlene Jewer
62, New Waterford
Marlene Jewer, 62, of 424 Cockburn St., New Waterford, passed away suddenly Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of Wilfred (Biff) and Genevieve (Oliver) MacPherson.
Marlene was a member of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. She was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club and was an avid card player. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother. She was a kind and giving person putting others above herself.
She is survived by two daughters, Sherry (Robert) Burke, Lingan and Lisa (Malcolm) MacLeod, New Waterford; three sons, Darren (Donna), Shawn and Shane (Anne), all of New Waterford; seven brothers, Blair (Sharon), Timmy (Judy), Bernard (Willena), Wilfred Jr. (Donna), Brian (Rose), Gussie (Cathy), Blaise, all of New Waterford and six sisters, Patricia (Sandy) White, Fray (Raymond) Hogan, Alana Snook, Clorene MacPherson, Shannon MacDonald and Charlene (Alex) Chopeck, all of New Waterford; nine grandchildren, Bernard, Justin, Alicia, Allison, Kelsey, Shelby, Logan, Samantha and Holly.
Marlene was predeceased by her husband, William Jewer in 1994 and a brother-in-law, George Snook.
Visitation will take place Wednesday evening 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, (902) 862-6439. Funeral mass will be held Friday, 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford with Fr. Donald McGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Frederice Horice Sharpe
88, New Waterford
Frederick Horice Sharpe Sr., 88, of 670 Sharpes Lane, New Waterford, passed away Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Donkin, he was the son of the late Herbert and Edith Sharpe of England.
He was a member of All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford. He was employed for 47 years with Dominion Coal Co. and Devco working in various mines in the New Waterford area. He was a member of the New Waterford Hawkes Baseball Team winning various championships in the 1930s and 40s.
He was the last surviving member of his family.
He is survived by his wife, the former Stella Degoibbi; three daughters, May (Mrs. Walt Aubrey), Stanford, Conn., Gloria (Mrs. Doug Millar), Liverpool, N.S., and Sheila (Mrs. Derrick Jones), New Waterford; two sons, Fred Jr. (Sherry), Halifax, and Frank (Helen), New Waterford; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter; two brothers, Harold and Herbert.
Visitation for the late Mr. Sharpe will be held today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in the All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.
Margaret Catherine Conrad
New Waterford
Margaret Catherine Conrad, 77, of 12th St., New Waterford, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2000, at the QEII Hospital in Halifax.
Born in Colburn, Pictou County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Margaret (MacMillan) Wallace.
Margaret was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. She enjoyed many things in life which included needle art, knitting, crocheting, cooking for her family, and also making visits to Sydney’s Casino. Margaret loved to travel and she also got great pleasure from her vegetable and flower garden.
She is survived by five daughters, Sue Ann O’Brien Huckle (Jim), Dartmouth, Ruby Davis (Bert), Ontario, Margie MacMullen (Norm), Texas, Maureen Dommestrup (Rene), Florida, and Diana, Dartmouth; four sons, Sam (Maxine), Millan (Debbie), both of New Waterford, Stevie (Diane), Dartmouth, and Scott, Ontario. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law Linda (Leadbeater) Conrad, New Waterford. Also a brother Clarence (Clary), Ottawa; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Frankie Conrad Sr. in Feb. 1972, a son Frankie Jr., three brothers, Bob, Bill, and Millan.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (862-6439). Funeral service will take place on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Calvin United Church, New Waterford, Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will be held in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney/Glace Bay Highway.
Margaret Catherine will be taken to church at 12 p.m. on Wednesday.
Charles Alphones Dewaepenaere
82, New Waterford
Charles Alphonse DeWaepenaere, 82, of New Waterford, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at home.
Born in Tilff, Belgium, he was the son of the late Adolphe and Jeanne (Walkeners) DeWaepenaere.
Charles began working in the coal mines in Cape Breton at the age of 14 until his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy McNeil; three daughters, Anna and Jean, both of New Waterford and Selena, Maugerville, N.B.; sons, John, Upper Gagetown, N.B. Adolphe (Duffy), Barrie, Ont., Raymond, Yarmouth, N.S., John E. and George, both of St. Catharines, Ont.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Frances Rockett and a brother, Lucien.
The late Mr. DeWaepenaere will have no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held in Mount Carmel Church, Friday, 10 a.m. with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Vincent Myles Campbell
9, New Waterford
Vincent Myles Campbell, 9, of 3569 Ellsworth Ave., New Waterford, passed away Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at the IWK Hospital, Halifax, surrounded by his family.
Born in Sydney, Vincent was the son and best friend of Chrissy Campbell and Myles Tighe. Vincent was a member of Mount Carmel Church. He was a Grade 3 student at Greenfield School, Scotchtown. He was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan and enjoyed playing with his friends and many cousins.
Vincent had a variety of special gifts, a sense of humour, a heart of gold and always ready to give to others, were just a few to mention.
Surviving are his maternal grandmother, Cathy Campbell, maternal great-grandmother, Mary Campbell, both of New Waterford; paternal grandparents, Myles and Jeanette Tighe, New Victoria. Vincent is also survived by many special cousins; playmates; aunts and uncles and special aunts, Susan Campbell (Timmy McNeil), Mary Beaton and special uncle, David Romans; special cousins, Lucas, Logan and Lexie.
He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Vincent Campbell in 1991.
Visitation will take place in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, 10 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
