Margaret Deveaux
New Waterford
It is with great sadness and emotion that the family of Margaret Deveaux informs you of her passing following a courageous battle with cancer. With her family at her bedside, Margaret passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000.
Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late Constant and Marguerite (Chiasson) Deveaux.
She was a member of Mount Carmel Parish and had been employed on the housekeeping staff of the Carmel Centre until her retirement due to illness.
She is survived by her sister and best friend, Lucy Chiasson, New Waterford (with whom she resided). Also survived by sisters, Marie A. Aucoin, Delia Roach and Helen Boudreau, all of Cheticamp; one brother, Arthur (Annie Mae) Deveaux, Cheticamp; sisters-in-law, Therese Desveaux, New Waterford and Elizabeth Gaudet, Cheticamp.
She will be sadly missed by nieces, Noella (Melvin) Chiasson, Elaine (Raymond) Arseneau, Shannon (Tommy) Oakley; nephews, Vince Desveaux, Robert (Cindy) Desveaux and Raymond (Rita) Desveaux, all of New Waterford. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in Cheticamp, Halifax, Moncton, Montreal and Oshawa. Also by her “pride and joy” great-nephew Thomas Christopher Oakley. May she watch over him as he takes his first steps.
A devoted sister and aunt, Margaret will be fondly remembered by her many relatives and friends for her compassion and acts of kindness towards others. Her courage has been a source of inspiration for her loved ones.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Clara and Marie-Lorette, brothers, Simon-John, Willie-Joe, Raphael, three brothers in infancy, by niece, Ann Marie Beaton and nephew, Marcel Gaudet.
Visitation will take place Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society, Cape Breton Branch.
Ethel MacLean, RN
84, New Waterford
Ethel MacLean, RN, 84, of 730 Downe St., New Waterford, passed away at home peacefully, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Susan (White) Murphy.
She was married to the late Malcolm MacLean, New Waterford. Ethel was a member of St. Agnes Parish, New Waterford.
Ethel graduated from the New Waterford General Hospital as a registered nurse in 1937 and worked as staff until she became instructor of nursing at the New Waterford General Hospital in 1941. During the following years, she relieved as evening and night supervisor. Then in 1955 she returned as instructor of the school of nursing at the General Hospital graduating the last class of nurses from the program in 1956.
Following closure of the training school, she was appointed director of nursing service and held this position until the opening of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital in April, 1963. She worked as medical and surgical nursing supervisor until the School for Nursing Assistants opened in 1963. In 1967, she was appointed associate director of nursing education, while still maintaining her role as instructor. She remained in this position until her retirement in 1981.
Surviving are daughters, Barbara Shaw (John), Sydney, Carmel MacNeil (Donald), Arichat, Lynn Berger, RN, (Bob), with whom she resided; and brother, Cameron Murphy, Sydney Mines. Also surviving are grandchildren, Susan, Christopher, Nicole, Matthew, Jennifer, Shauna, Tanya, Robert and Jocelyn.
Mrs. MacLean was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm (Malcie), sisters, Margaret (Peggy) Darroch, Pauline Kalbhenn, Sr. Kathleen (Babs), and brother, Thomas.
The late Mrs. MacLean will have visitation today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray’s Funeral Home, New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, New Waterford with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care or CNIB.
John Quigley
76, New Waterford
John Quigley, 76, of New Waterford, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Inverness, he was the son of the late Tom and Euphemia (MacLean) Quigley.
John was a retired coalminer. He enjoyed fishing and Scottish music. In his later years he never ventured further than the front step where he enjoyed the company of his neighbours.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Dorothy (Brady); daughters, Carolyn Bates (Bernie), Joanne McKinnon (Adrian); sons, Billy (Terry), David (Lynn), Gordon (Maria), and Richard, all of New Waterford; eight grandchildren, Melissa, Ashley, April, David, Willie, Gordie, Lyanne and Scott. Also surviving are sisters, Jemima Hutchinson, New Waterford, Linda Lynds, Halifax, and brother, Tom Quigley, Truro.
John was predeceased by sister, Jessie Frizzil and a brother, William.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral service will take place Friday, Dec. 1, at 2 p.m. at Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Mr. Quigley will be taken to the church at noon Friday. Burial will be in the Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Kevin John Doyle
59, New Waterford
Kevin John Doyle, 59, of 3447 Center Lane, New Waterford, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family.
He was born in New Waterford, and the son of the late Joseph Arthur and Alice (Drake) Doyle.
He was a member of St. Agnes Church and the parish men’s club. Kevin was employed with Devco at the International Coal Piers from December 15, 1976 up until his retirement on May 5, 1997. He was also employed at one time at Louis Allen’s Grocery Store.
His hobbies included woodworking in his garage and hunting and fishing. Four wheeling in the country brought him great enjoyment.
Surviving are his wife, the former Dolena Lasovski; two daughters, Karen Marie (John Petrie) and Alicia, both at home; one special grandson, Johnathan Kevin Joseph; five brothers, Art (Emily), Billy (Shirley), Austin (Terrina), Pat (Frances), Johnny (Debbie), all of New Waterford; one sister, Elizabeth Wilson, New Waterford. Also survived by his four-wheeling buddies, his father-in-law, Bronny Lasovski and brother-in-law, Bronny Lasovski Jr.
He is gone to rest with his mother-in-law and good friend, Cecilia Lasovski.
The late Mr. Doyle will have no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Funeral mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Johnny McLellan
78, New Waterford
Johnny McLellan, 78, of 3146 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, passed away Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Dan Allen and Mary (MacDonald) McLellan.
Johnny was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. He was a miner for many years until his retirement. He was also a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club and active in Scouts Canada.
He is survived by his wife, the former Agnes Gillis; three sons, Wendel (Maria), Bernie (Dot), both of New Waterford, and Lowell, Sydney; two sisters, Laurentia McLellan, New Waterford, and Jessie McLellan, Lingan; four grandchildren, Carmen, Sean, Karyn, and Beth.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son Archie, and an infant son John Hugh; four sisters, Marie, Annie, Mary Ann, and Catherine.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.

Memorial Service
Vivian Ursula Fraser, 76, of New Waterford, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at home.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Theresa Carroll.
She was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, New Waterford. Ursula worked at the Sydney River Jasper’s for many years until her retirement.
She is survived by four daughters, Claudia and Sheila, both of Toronto, Diane and Alana, both of New Waterford; four sons, Richard and David, both of Toronto, and Michael and Robert, both of New Waterford; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Allan in 1996, an infant son, Leonard, and a sister, Marie.
Visitation for Ursula Fraser will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, with Fr. Robert Neville officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
