Walter Ropek
65, New Waterford
Walter Ropek, 65, of 3541 Mary Ave., New Waterford, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital with his loving wife by his side.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Martin and Mary (Niedgielski) Ropek.
Walter was a member of St. Agnes Parish, New Waterford. He was a coal miner for many years until his retirement. He was also a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club and an avid dart shooter.
Walter is survived by his wife, the former Martha Barry; five sons, Wally (Shirley), Dean (Karen), Jason, all of New Waterford, Martin and Jimmy, both of Toronto; two daughters, Darlene (Mike), Ontario, Cynthia, Calgary; two sisters, Sophie (Angus) Gillis, New Waterford, Jenny (Eli) Odo, New Waterford; a brother, Danny (Donna), New Waterford. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Marie (nee Devoe) Ropek; brother, Ted; three sisters, Rosie, Cecelia, and Mary.
Visitation for Walter will take place on Monday and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (862-6439). Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Agnes Church with Rev. Bob Neville officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Walter Ropek of 3541 Mary Ave., New Waterford, who passed away Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, was also survived by a grandson, Christian, Calgary and a granddaughter, Kennady, Toronto.
Anna Marie Cormier
New Waterford
Today we lost a special person, a mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Anna Marie Cormier of Smith Street, New Waterford, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John Archie and Mary Belle (MacKenzie) MacKinnon and the stepdaughter of the late Nellie Olive (Leaver) MacKinnon.
Anna was a member of Mount Carmel Parish, New Waterford. She was employed at Schwartz Clothing Store in New Waterford for 40 years. She also served on the Altar Society and the St. Anne’s Society of Mount Carmel Church.
Anna was a founding member of the Coal Bowl Board of Directors and continued to serve on this board until her passing.
She is survived by a daughter, Isabel McColl (Mike), Nanaimo, B.C.; three sons, Lowell and Christena, New Waterford, Gregory and Cedella, West Bay, Port Hawkesbury, and Kenny and Clare, Howie Centre; two brothers, Angus (Ida), Scotchtown, Peter (Geraldine) ‘Boots’, River Ryan; two sisters, Theresa LeLievre, Joan (Bernard MacKinnon), both of Bedford, N.S.; six grandchildren, Kyle, Joseph, Kari Ann, Todd, Scott and Norman; three great-grandchildren, Sarah, Shelby and Daniel.
Anna was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Adrian in April 1970, a brother, John William MacKinnon.
Visitation will take place Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and Monday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Carmel Church, Fr. Donald MacGillivary officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Anna, donations may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of N.S.
Anna will be greatly missed by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The KOC will meet 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home for prayers.
Margaret Helen (Tuddy) Kalbhenn
78, New Waterford
Johnena Agnes Livingstone, 96, of Orangedale, Inverness County, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the Inverary Manor, Inverness.
Born in Skye Mountain, Inverness County, she was the daughter of the late John and Jessie Ann (MacDonald) Livingstone.
She was a retired school teacher having taught in the Whycocomagh and Orangedale area for many years. She was a member of the Orangedale United Church and a member of the UCW. She was lovingly cared for by the Raymond Johnstone family for 13 years.
She is survived by two nephews, Gordon MacRae, Wilber MacRae, both of Middle River; two nieces, Louise MacLeod, Dedham, Mass., Mildred MacDonald, West Newton, Mass.
Predeceased by two sisters, Annie MacRae and Alexis MacRae, brother, Alex.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday in Orangedale United Church, Rev. Aaron Billard officiating, assisted by Jim Sinclair. Burial in the Stewartdale Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Orangedale United Church or charity of one’s choice.
Margaret Helen (Tuddy) Kalbhenn
78, New Waterford
Margaret Helen (Tuddy) Kalbhenn, 78, of New Waterford, who died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, is also survived by nine grandchildren, Paul, Ronnie, Bradley, Joseph, Kevin, Sharon Erb, Paula, Joanne and Michelle; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Thomas Otto White
86, New Waterford
Thomas Otto White, 86, of 634 St. Joseph St., New Waterford, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Ambrose and Mary Ann (Murphy) White.
Otto was a member of Mount Carmel Parish, New Waterford. He was retired from Devco, where he worked for 46 years. He was mine manager at No. 12 and Lingan collieries and at the Victoria Junction Coal Preparation Plant. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors.
Otto will be sadly missed by his many close friends and relatives, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jessie Ann MacKinnon; three daughters, Mary (Mrs. Ed O’Quinn), Agnes (Mrs. Phonse Martell), both of New Waterford, Ann (Mrs. Archie MacLellan ), Okotoks, Alta.; three sons, Joseph (Tessie), Ambrose (Marilyn) and Greg (Donna), all of New Waterford. Also surviving are three sisters, Essie (Mrs. Tom MacDonald), Margaret (Mrs. Gussie MacDonald), both of New Waterford, and Mary (Mrs. Pat Spencer), North Sydney; 15 grandchildren Joanne, Nancy, Darren, Robert, Vernon, Dale, David, Craig, Deanna, Gregory, Carol Ann, Otto, Wayne, Dillon, Heidi and two great-grandchildren, Callahan and Connor.
He was predeceased by one brother, Joseph.
Visitation for the late Otto White will be held at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
The New Waterford KOC will attend the wake of the late Otto White Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Ronald (Rannie) MacVarish
76, New Waterford
Ronald (Rannie) MacVarish, 76, of 3490 Baker St., New Waterford, passed away suddenly Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at home.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late John and Flora (MacDougall) MacVarish.
Rannie served during the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was also a coal miner having worked in No. 12 and Lingan collieries. Rannie was an active member of the Gaelic Society, the Royal Canadian Legion and loved to skate, ride his bike and bowl.
He is survived by sisters, Sarah (Sadie), with whom he resided, Catherine (Kaye) MacMullin, New Waterford; nieces, Elaine (MacVarish) Grandy, Halifax, Linda (LeBlanc) Catoul, Victoria Mines, Susan (LeBlanc) Moran, Judique, Elizabeth LeBlanc, Sydney; nephews, John LeBlanc, Calgary, Alfie LeBlanc Jr., New Victoria, Ian MacMullin, Moncton, N.B., Ronny MacMullin, Donny MacMullin, both of New Waterford.
Rannie was predeceased by brothers, Hugh (Toddy), Donald (Shelly), sister, Agnes.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, in Saint Agnes Church, New Waterford, with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Veterans Comfort Fund.
Rannie will be sadly missed by his many friends.
