Leona Pauline MacKay
94, New Waterford
Leona Pauline MacKay, 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Chignecto, N.S., she was the daughter of the late William C. and Margaret Elizabeth (Skidmore) MacKay.
She was a member of the Calvin United Church, New Waterford.
She is survived by a sister, Doris Shortner, Moncton, N.B.; sister-in-law, Effie MacKay; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters, Marjorie Paruch, Beryl Wilton; brothers, Corliss, Russell, Kelvin and Kenneth.
At the request of the deceased, cremation has taken place. Interment to take place at Union Grove Cemetery in Scotchtown at a later date.
Because of Leona’s great love of animals, donations in her memory may be made to the SPCA, Two Rivers Wildlife Park, or a charity of one’s choice.

Mary LeForte
82, New Waterford
Mary LeForte, 82, a resident of 557 Thompson St., and a former resident of Irish Brook Road, New Waterford, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at home.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Jane (Frost) Dewan. Mary was a member of Mt. Carmel Church and she also attended St. Michael’s Church.
She was a loving mother to sons, Joe, Toronto, and Gregg, Vancouver, and daughter, Mary (Charlie) McNamara, Glace Bay.
Mary is also survived by a brother, Art, Halifax; six grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Simon in 1972, brothers, Jess, Dan and Charlie and sisters, Janie and Catherine.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (862-6439). Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in Mt. Carmel Church, New Waterford, Fr. Donald McGillivray officiating. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Mary, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association of Nova Scotia.
KOC will gather at the funeral home for prayers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Lawrence James Hawley
82, New Waterford
Lawrence James Hawley, 49, of Soapstone Mines, Inverness County, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at home.
Born in Baddeck, he was a son of the late Lawrence J. and Ellie Ann (MacRury) Hawley.
He was a propane technician and worked for Speedy Propane, Sydney for 22 years. He was an adherent of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Whycocomagh.
Survived by his wife, the former Isabel Fraser; daughter, Lori Ann, Ross Ferry; sons, Rodney (Francine), Blues Mills, Sandy, Ross Ferry; sisters, Annie Mae (Peter) MacInnis, Skye Glen, Margaret Rose (Jerry) Ward, Soapstone Mines, Barbie (Eric) LeFort, Soapstone Mines; brother, Jimmy (Mary) MacRury, Soapstone Mines; the joy of his life, three grandchildren, Bhreagh, Danielle and Alexander; aunt, Dolena Brewster, Glace Bay; uncle, LeRoy MacRury, Whycocomagh; 12 nieces and nephews and large extended family.
Visitation will be held this evening (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Rev. John Barry Forsyth officiating. Burial in the Stewartdale Cemetery.
Leonard Francis MacDonald
84, New Waterford
Leonard Francis, 84, of 3197 Hinchey Ave., New Waterford, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Leonard Francis MacDonald was born on June 7, 1916, at Upper Grand Mira, Cape Breton. He was the fifth child of Angus and Annie Jane (MacDougall).
Leonard worked on the family farm until age 20 when he moved to New Waterford and became employed as a farm hand and milk deliverer for Neil MacKinnon of No. 12.
In 1937 he married Mary Ann Sampson of New Waterford and they had seven children. Leonard was employed as a miner with the Dominion Coal Company, No. 18 Colliery and later transferred to No. 12 Colliery, where he worked as a mechanic. He took early retirement in 1971, at the age of 55. For the past several years he resided with his son and daughter-in-law Philip and Helen MacDonald.
Leonard is survived by daughter, Elaine Catherine (Henry) Van Berkel, Antigonish; five sons, Angus ‘Sonny’ MacDonald, Mira, Leonard Francis (Linda) MacDonald, Antigonish, Sylvester Remy (Janice) MacDonald, Mabou, Philip Ambrose (Helen) MacDonald and John Bernard (Katie) MacDonald, both of New Waterford; brother, Sylvester (Audry Campbell), Welland, Ont.; three sisters, Catherine (Philip) MacKinnon, Windsor, Ont., Marie (Angus) MacNeil, Thorold, Ont., and Ethel (Gordon) Chiasson, Coxheath, C.B.; 32 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Mary Ann Sampson, daughter of the late Angus and Joanna Sampson of New Waterford, daughter Jenette (Alvin) Rivalt and four brothers, Lawrence (Mary MacNeil), Alexander, Roderick (Russie) and Bryden (Marie Roach).
Visitation will take place Monday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (862-6439). Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Agnes Church, Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only. As an expression of sympathy for Leonard donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Alzheimers Association.
Victor Francais VanStrepen
63, New Waterford
Victor Francais VanStrepen, 63, formerly of New Waterford, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2000, in Vancouver, B.C.
He is survived by his wife, Leona and children, Terri, Connie and Jason. He is also survived by sisters, Angel, Irene, Elaine and Diane, along with brothers, Bob, Dave, Wayne and Albert.
He will be remembered for his love, friendship and sense of humour.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Walter Ropek
New Waterford
Walter Ropek, passed away peacefully at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001.
Walter is survived by four sons, Martin, Wally, Dean and Jason, all of New Waterford; two daughters, Cynthia, Calgary and Darlene, Toronto, and by one grandson, Christian, British Columbia. Walter is also survived by his first wife, Agnes MacPherson.
He was a retired coal miner.
