Charles Edgar Roach
73, New Waterford
Charles Edgar Roach, 73, of 3140 Atlantic Ave., New Waterford, passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at home surrounded by his wife and family.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Hubert and Delphine (Poirier) Roach.
Edgar was a member of Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. He worked in the coal mines at an early age and with the town of New Waterford as a machine operator until his retirement.
Edgar is survived by his wife, the former Margaret MacInnis, formerly of Shenacadie; daughters, Delphine (Alex), Leona (James), both of New Waterford, Tena (Troy), Sydney Mines; sons, Neil (Sarah), Sydney Mines, Hubert (Shauna), Joseph (Kim), Lenus, all of New Waterford; 11 grandchildren; brother, Johnny (Cecelia), Scotchtown; nephew, Kevin Rising, of Halifax, whom Edgar thought of as a son; brothers-in-law, James (Betty), Shenacadie, Johnny (Berniece), Sydney; special sister-in-law, Patricia Lockwood and family of Windsor, Ont.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by several sisters and brothers.
There will be no visitation for the late Edgar Roach as cremation has taken place. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Hone, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Sarah Elizabeth McNeil
88, New Waterford
Sarah Elizabeth McNeil, 88, of 3540 Duggan Ave., New Waterford, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Reserve, she was the daughter of the late Michael C. and Sarah J. (Matthews) McNeil.
Sarah was a member of St. Agnes Church. She was an avid dancer and enjoyed baking, especially pies.
Surviving are one son, James (Theresa), New Waterford; one brother, Michael, with whom she resided; sister, Ethel (Mrs. George McNamara), Ontario; three grandchildren, James Jr., Laura and Judy; one very special great-granddaughter, Amanda Lynn McNeil.
She was predeceased by five brothers, Neil, George, Pius, Alfred and Charlie, two sisters, Annie Bursy and Laura Pheifer.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Saint Agnes Church with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. As an expression of sympathy for Sarah, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Sarah will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew her.
Leo Raymond Timmons
64, New Waterford
Leo Raymond Timmons, 64, New Waterford, missing since Feb. 14, 2001, is now presumed dead.
Leo was born in New Waterford, son of the late Leo Timmons and Irene (Prendergast) Timmons. He attended St. Agnes School, where he excelled as an athlete.
After graduation he worked as a physical education instructor at St. Agnes. Leo joined the air force and spent three years in Germany as a recreation director. He then moved to Vancouver, B.C. and attended the University of British Columbia, graduating as a dental technician. After a number of years in Vancouver, he returned to New Waterford, where he resided at Curran Court. Leo loved music and enjoyed playing the guitar. He was a member of the New Waterford Branch Army and Navy.
Leo is survived by one daughter, Laurie, Vancouver; one sister, Agatha (Carl) Getto; brothers, Franklyn Timmons, New Waterford, and Jack (Georgetta) Timmons, New Glasgow.
A mass in Leo’s memory will be held Monday, Feb. 26 at St. Agnes Church, at 2 p.m. with Fr. Robert Neville officiating.
Damien Scott
59, New Waterford
Damien Scott, 59, of 3748 Ellsworth Ave., New Waterford, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in New Waterford.
Born in Newfoundland, he was the son of the late John and Kathleen (Tucker) Scott.
Damien was a member of St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. He was a miner for many years working in No. 12, No. 26, and retiring from Lingan Colliery in 1988. He was also a member of the New Waterford Lions Club and was also an avid dart player.
He is survived by his wife, the former Deanie Hinchey; two daughters, Susan (Corbett) Byrne (Darryl), New Waterford, and Joann Scott (Jason), Crossfield, Alta.; two sons, Damien Scott (Maureen), Sackville, and Wayne Scott (Velvet), Crossfield, Alta.; brother, Richard Scott, Newfoundland; and 11 grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Scott.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at a later date with burial in St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
As an expression of sympathy for Damien, donations may be made to the New Waterford Lions Club.
Carmella Fiore
71, New Waterford
Carmella Catherine Fiore of New Waterford, age 71, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at the Halifax Infirmary.
Born on June 23, 1929, in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Lucy (Tighe) MacLeod.
She was a member of St. Agnes Church and was employed at one time at the New Waterford General and New Waterford Consolidated hospitals and Breton Bay Nursing Home; also at the New Waterford Paramount Theatre.
Carmella’s hobbies were darts, cards, dancing, music and gardening. She especially loved being at her cottage on the Mira.
Carmella was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by Louis, her loving husband of 50 years. Also, two daughters, Karen, New Waterford, and Gail Jollimore, New Victoria; aunt Charlotte Tighe, at home; three sons, Duane, Sydney, Craig (Paulette), Glace Bay, and Lorne (Sherry), New Waterford; two brothers, Norman Bernard, New Waterford, and Norman MacNeil, Toronto; three sisters, Regina Warburton, New Waterford, Tina Fiore, Brampton, Ont., Corinne Petrie, Toronto; and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by one son, David Louis, three sisters Christie Effie, Ethel O’Handley and Christina; two brothers Norman MacLeod and Neil (Peewee).
Remains will rest at V.J. MacGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday.
Funeral mass will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church. Burial in the Parish Cemetery. Fr. Bob Neville officiating.
Mary Catherine MacDonald
65, New Waterford
Mary Catherine MacDonald, age 65, of 669 St. Joseph Street, and formerly of 410, Tenth Street, New Waterford, died suddenly on Friday, March 2, 2001 at home.
Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Catherine (MacDonald) MacDonald.
Mary Catherine was a member of Mt. Carmel Parish. She was employed in the accounting department of Sydney Steel Corporation for several years, retiring in 1993. In her youth Mary Catherine was very active in sports.
She is survived by three brothers; John F. (Jiggy), (Mary) of Farwell, Michigan, John R. (Ripper) of Oshawa and Alex (Doreen) of New Waterford.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and D.A.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home 380 Smith Street, New Waterford.
Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Church with burial in the Parish Cemetery, Father Donald McGillivray officiating.
As an expression of sympathy for Mary Catherine, donations may be made to the IWK Childrens Wish Foundation or a charity of choice.
