Clifford Wylder Burchell
89, New Waterford
Clifford Wylder Burchell, 89, of 30 Gillis Rd., New Victoria and formerly of 3531 Thomas Ave., New Waterford, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Peter and Harriet (Knox) Burchell.
Wylder retired from the mines a number of years ago. He was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. Wylder was well known for his music abilities and also did some boxing in his younger years.
Surviving are his wife, Vangie (Deveaux) Michalsky; two daughters, Emma (Bill) James, Montreal, Marie Burchell, Edmonton, Alta.; two stepdaughters, Darlene (Wayne) Darroch, Geraldine (Blair) Corbett; one stepson, Bryan (Cynthia) Michalsky; three brothers, Peter, New Waterford, Wilson, Edward, both of New Victoria; one sister, Eva (Tom) Lamey, New Victoria; 15 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Wylder was predeceased by his first wife, the former Mabel McNeil, brothers, Ralph, Billy, Bob and Herbie, sisters, Bertha, Gladys, Mildred and Emma.
Visitation will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Funeral for the late Mr. Burchell will take place Sunday, March 11, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church with Reverend Duncan Roach officiating.
Mr. Burchell’s remains will be taken to the church at noon Sunday. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
William (Willie) Arthur Muise
70, New Waterford
William (Willie) Arthur Muise, age 70, of 620 Acadia St., New Waterford, died suddenly at home on Friday, March 9, 2001.
Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Thomas and Annie (LeForte) Muise.
He was a member of Mount Carmel Parish and he was employed with Devco until he retired in 1983. He was a member of the New Waterford Seniors/Pensioners Club where he enjoyed playing darts and cards, he also loved to fish.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Aucoin) Muise, New Waterford; stepchildren, Evelyn (Jim) Fleming, Annie Mae (Ray) McKenzie, both of New Waterford, Pat (Mary) Muise, Dartmouth, and David (Evelyn) Muise, New Waterford; 17 step-grandchildren and 20 step-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Laura Chaisson and Mary Blanche Muise, both of New Waterford.
Willie was predeceased by one stepson, Bernie Muise, sisters, Josephine, Mary, Cecile, Bertha and Rita, brothers, Joseph and Marcellin.
Visitation for the late William Muise will be held Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Margaret Hogan
92, New Waterford
Margaret Hogan, 92, of 19 Thomas St., Scotchtown, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Gull Island, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late James and Frances (Layman) Hogan.
Margaret was a member of St. Michael’s Church, Scotchtown.
Surviving are daughter, Agnes (Mrs. Bernie Peckham), Scotchtown; sons, Sam (Mary), Scotchtown, and Gabriel (Sandra), New Waterford; 25 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Jim Hogan; sons, Francis and Charlie; daughter, Mary (Mrs. Duncan Blewer); three daughters and one son in infancy; brothers, Mike, Peter, William John, Richard, Daniel; sister, Maude.
Visitation was held Sunday from 7-9 p.m. and will be held today (Monday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral will take place Tuesday, March 13, 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Dorothy Horwath
65, New Waterford
Dorothy Anne Horwath, 65, of 3731 Emerald St., New Waterford, died suddenly March 9, 2001.
Born October 6, 1935, she was the daughter of Bernard and Elizabeth (Aucoin) Currie and sister of Douglas, all of whom predeceased her.
She worked for many years in Glace Bay at the Employment Insurance office and made many friends in the community.
She is survived by her husband, Walter (Butch); daughter, Wanda (Wolter); and five grandchildren, Andreas, Tomas, Mattias, Maria and Tobias.
Cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Marguerite May (Mason) Darroch
89, New Waterford
Marguerite May (Mason) Darroch of Gillis Road, New Victoria, passed away peacefully Friday, March 16, 2001, at home. She was a former resident of 3142 Nicholson Ave., New Waterford.
Born in Reserve Mines, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Julia (McCann) Mason. In her earlier years, Marguerite was involved in the Joy Program at Mount Carmel School, CWL St. Michael’s Church and the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of St. Michael’s Church.
Marguerite is survived by three sons, Cameron, Blair (Rita), Clarence (Jean), all of New Waterford; two daughters, Doreen, New Waterford and Dale (Wayne) Ralston, U.S.A. She is also survived by two brothers, Clifford (Julia) and Todd (Rose), New Waterford; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cameron in 1988, daughter-in-law, Eileen, one brother, Leo and one sister, Rose.
The late Mrs. Darroch will have visitation Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Funeral mass will be held Monday, 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church. Cremation to follow. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery in Scotchtown.
